Episode 122 of Postcards is a special episode featuring the return of one of my favorite authors. Cyberpunk, Science Fiction, and horror legend John Shirley is most famous as one of the screenwriters of The Crow. He is the author of several dozen novels and multiple award-nominated and acclaimed short story collections including the award-winning Black Butterflies and the recently reissued Really, Really, Really, Really Weird Stories.

As a novelist I consider John to have masterpieces in both Science Fiction (City Come A-Walkin) and Horror (Wetbones). The last time he came on we talked about his recently released SF novel Stormland. This time we are talking about his new Science Fiction action novel Subortibal7. Developed alongside the studio Alon Entertainment who developed the TV series of The Expanse and the recent Blade Runner sequel. Suborbital7 will be on my top ten when the year is over so highly recommended.

In this interview we breakdown this new fresh take on military science fiction and orbital combat that is ripped from tomorrow’s headlines. We talk about John's recent projects, the real-life inspirations for Suborbital7, deep research, and writing realistic space combat. The first 45 minutes or so is spoiler-free. Then after a spoiler warning, I make John very uncomfortable talking about all of the writing process. He is serious he wants you to read it first.

Izzy Lee was named as one of A.V. Club's 10 female filmmakers to hire, a director on the rise. Her award-winning tales have screened at major international genre festivals such as Fantasia, Overlook, Morbido, FrightFest, Fantaspoa, Brooklyn Horror, Boston Sci-Fi, Boston Underground, Chattanooga, and more. She's directed nearly two dozen shorts. From 2022-2023, Lee earned five Certificates of Completion from a variety of Sundance Collab’s Directing and Producing courses. Additionally, Lee shadowed director Adam Egypt Mortimer on the SpectreVision feature Archenemy, and her first novella, I Can See Your Lies, will be out on February 13, 2024, from Dark Hart Books, an imprint of Dark Matter Ink.

In this episode, my guest is Dreampunk author and editor Cliff Jones Jr. whose new novel Dreck is Part Surreal, Part humor, part science fictional material… all the taste and appearance of a PKD nightmare all wrapped into a unique and modern voice. Cliff is a serious Philip K. Dick nerd and the vanguard of a new surreal subgenre Dreampunk.

In this interview we talk about Cliff’s influences, Philip K. Dick, writing weird fiction and we go into a spoiler discussion of his novel Dreck. Dreck is one of my favorite books of 2023.

Each and every book we read and consume is a relationship between two people on each side of the book. The time you really get a feeling for that is when you personally sell books at book signings and talk directly to that person. You can’t help but think about that when you are reading a book with a title like this one. Such is the theme of this science fiction novel by author, professor of English, and long-time Improv teacher Samuel Jaye Tanner.

Tanner is the author of the absurdist Vonnegut-inspired science fiction novel The Person on the Other Side of This Book.

In this interview we talk about Tanner’s path to science fiction and writing, compare the writing and reading experience of this novel, what authors it reminded me that Sam had not even heard of, and much more.

Since 2000 one of the most extreme metal in Syracuse New York, a city known for brutal hardcore is the band Ebony Sorrow. Most of that time John Bukowski has been sharing the guitar playing and vocalist duties. 

I wasn’t surprised when he started to DJ his own show on Syracuse FM radio. The show A Dangerous Meeting includes interviews with musicians talking about their influences. The show started with local guests and recently started to bring on national figures like members of Candlemass and Megadeth.

In this interview, John and I nerd out about music, hardcore, and metal and talk about the format of his show.
