- Hagrid takes the students in the Forbidden Forest for their lesson and we finally learn what pulls the school carriages - Thestrals
- Draco seems very scared to go into the forest. After everything he has done lately, Tori wishes something would eat him in there
- Does it make sense to teach a lesson about a creature that most students cannot see?
- Hagrid is actually doing a great job at his lesson so far and is very knowledgable about Thestrals
- It's interesting that there are magical creatures that have superstitious connotations like in the real world
- Umbridge shows up in the forest for her inspection, too bad the Thestrals won't eat her
- Umbridge is deliberately speaking to Hagrid rudely and speaking over him, and about him to students during the lesson to obviously make him look incompetent, +1 sucks point
- When Neville reveals that he can see the Thestrals, Umbridge straight up asks him who he saw die in front of his peers, not considering the trauma this event may of caused +1 sucks point
- Neville being able to see the Thestrals as well as Harry shows another link between them, could be foreshadowing to the prophecy potentially being about Neville
- Hermione is super mad at Umbridge and we are on her side
- It's Christmastime at Hogwarts but Shay is just starting to decorate for Halloween season in the real world
- Peeves trying to strangle Ron with tinsel brings some whimsy to the season decorating
- For the first time Harry wants to leave Hogwarts for Christmas
- Hermione is supposed to be going skiing with her parents for Christmas, and Tori has skiing lessons trauma
- Arthur Weasley must love having Hermione as a daughter in law in the future, think of all the muggle things she can show him
- Ron forgest to tell Harry he is coming to the burrow for Christmas, such a classic teenage boy move
- At the last DA meeting of the term, Harry finds that Dobby has decorated the Room of Requirement with baubles of his face - iconic

- Neville has improved so much with the DA lessons we love that for him
- Cho is lingering at the end of the meeting and Harry just wants her to wish him Merry Christmas
- Cho is upset over Cedric and Harry is doing his best to comfort her... which as a teenage boy isn't great
- Poor Cho, she is really dealing with a lot of things
- Harry and Cho have their very first kiss, very true to life and as awkward as you expect

- Hermione's exasperation of having to explain the feelings of teenage girls to teenage boys is so funny

- Harry is having real anxiety about his feelings about Cho, if she liked the kiss, and what expectations she will have from him going forward and if she'll ask about Cedric again
- Hermione is writing a long letter to Krum - what do they write to each other about?
- Ron asks Harry what Hermione sees in Krum and poor guy, it's hard when the other person your crush speaks about is older and a famous athlete
- Harry has a weird dream where he is obviously processing his feelings about Cho and his worries that she prefers Cedric
- It's a nice touch with Harry hanging up baubles in the shape of Dobby's head
- Harry has a dream through the eyes of Voldemort's snake, which foreshadows that Nagini is a Horcrux
- Snake Harry attacks poor Arthur Weasley before he is woken up by Ron
- It must of been so hard for Ron to see Harry in such a state while Harry is also telling him is dad is very injured
- McGonagall is brought over and she thankfully believes Harry
- We discuss the reports that the author originally intended for Arthur to die from his injuries in OOTP

- Tori recalls her childhood babysitter encouraging her to finish this chapter
- Is this chapter a bit dull compared to the previous?
- Harry has just gotten in so much trouble and kicked off the Quidditch team but he is willing to risk it all to see Hagrid
- Shay does not understand how big the Invisibility Cloak is - how does it fit three teenagers?
- Despite it being against the rules and right after a long trip, Hagrid is happy to see the trio
- It's been a long book so far without Hagrid
- The films played it very safe with Hagrid's appearance
- Shay is not a fan of the green ooze
- Hagrid is trying so hard to keep his secret operation a secret but the trio will not give up, they are just so nosy
- It's interesting to think that Hagrid left for this mission at the very end of GoF and is only getting back now part way through the term
- Fudge had someone tailing Hagrid immediately at the end of GoF - or has he always had someone keeping an eye on Dumbledore's inner circle?
- Finding Giants isn't hard according to Hagrid
- What did Hagrid get into a disagreement with a Vampire about?
- Shay appreciates the trio using their Slytherin traits to coerce Hagrid to talk about his mission with them in exchange for catching him up on what happened to Harry
- Hagrid's tale about the giants is actually quite grim for a children's book
- Wizards 100% contributed to the giants current predicament and it is nice the story includes it
- Shay can grudgingly admit that Dumbledore played this right diplomatically
- Was the battle helmet giving to the Giant Grug commissioned for a Giant head? How did Dumbledore manage to have this?
- Hagrid's mission is thrown off by the Grug they were working with being killed off soon into their operation
- Hagrid was unfortunately not able to recruit any Giants to the cause which is disheartening
- Love Hagrid's admiration for Madame Maxime
- Hagrid and the trio are interrupted by Umbridge paying Hagrid a visit
- Why is Umbridge bothering Hagrid so late at night? Surely her interrogation could wait until a respectable hour +1 sucks point
- Umbridge speaks to Hagrid so rudely, obviously showing her prejudice +1 sucks point
- Interesting that Umbridge at least attempted to be fake nice with the other professors but not with Hagrid
- It doesn't seem right that Umbridge can demand to know why and where Hagrid was on leave
- Love Hagrid but he is so bad at lying
- Hagrid loves yapping too much to sense Umbridge's bad vibes
- Umbridge hates Fang which is a red flag
- Hermione tries to convince Hagrid to change his lesson plans but he does not seemed worried
- Shay wishes the story would divulge more about how the wizards oppressed other magical beings and caused a lot of issues that are touched on but never really solved
- Lots of exposition in this chapter but more exciting chapters are coming!

- It seems wrong that Hogwarts doesn't encourage students to be friends with others outside their house
- Confirmation that Hermione was almost put in Ravenclaw
- Would Ravenclaw been a better fit for Hermione, especially at the beginning of the series?
- Hermione using the Death Eater dark marks for inspiration shows how lucky we are that she is on the good side
- Minerva's dedication to ensuring the Gryffindor Quidditch team wins is admirable
- Snape is not putting a stop to the Slytherin's cursing members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, +1 Sucks Point
- Harry is used to the ridicule and attacks from the Slytherin's before a Quidditch match but poor Ron is not handling it well
- Ron needs to remember he has punched Malfoy before and he can do it again
- Luna's Gryffindor Hat is so cool! Luna is obviously very creative and very talented with magic
- Tori recalls her fangirl moment when Hermione kisses Ron for good luck
- Malfoy has made badges for the Slytherin's to wear - very foreboding
- Who is making all these badges for Draco?
- Tori hates the badges, Malfoy and the fact he is a nepo baby
- Crabbe and Goyle have made the Slytherin team as beaters, goon Quidditch at its finest
- We have missed Lee Jordan's commentary
- Tori struggles reading the Quidditch game, and feels so bad for Ron
- Draco appears to have written and taught all the Slytherin's a terrible song about Ron to sing during the game
- What song makes you want to die of embarrassment more, Ginny's singing Valentine to Harry or the Weasley is our King song?
- Imagine if Draco applied himself to other tasks instead of harassing Harry and Ron
- Ron is not able to play well understandably, but Harry catches the snitch and is able to win the game for Gryffindor
- Draco cannot let this go and continues to say disgusting things about the Weasley's to Harry and the team
- George and Harry basically jump Malfoy, and it is deserved
- Shay thinks they should of waited to jump Malfoy when their were no witnesses
- Draco has gotten away with far too much, what he is saying is vile
- Tori goes back to all the times Malfoy was hit in the series and a new counter has been made! Talk Shit Get Hit will count all the times Draco gets hit (which he deserves)
- Is Hogwarts (and Dumbledore) partly responsible for why Draco is the way he is?
- Is Draco more emboldened in OOTP due to Lucius being in both Fudge's inner circle and Voldemort's?

- Umbridge gives Harry, Fred and George a lifetime ban from Quidditch unjustly, and Fred wasn't even involved in the fight
- Tori hates Umbridge, and gives her +3 sucks points for being petty, being bias, being power-hungry and for being a huge bitch
- How does a lifelong ban even work? It seems wrong for Umbridge to confiscate Harry and the Twins brooms since they are their property that they paid for

- Ron hasn't been seen since the game and comes back so sad and wanting to resign

- Shay is not here for practicing spells on poor frogs and birds
- Hermione is uncertain about the secret Defence group now that Sirius thinks its a great idea
- Harry tries to defend Sirius but he doesn't have the best track record of good plans
- Is Sirius living through Harry? Hermione thinks so
- Quidditch practice in the rain sounds awful - why did the use the charm to repel water after already wet?

- Hermione is initially concerned about Dobby's find as he doesn't have the best track record either - but is sold once she knows that Dumbledore has used it
- The first DA meeting happens and Hermione cannot resist being a teacher's pet and adding some structure
- Ginny comes in with the best name for the group, but what are some other options?
- Harry teaches the group his signature spell - and they need the practice
- Harry and Cho have a few moments - their romance is slowly blooming
- Marietta is the worst friend to bring - why didn't Cho bring someone else
- It is such an abuse of power that Marietta feels she needs to be super aware of what she is doing at school or have it affect her mom's job at the Ministry because of Umbridge
- Cedric is the elephant in the room between Cho and Harry

- Hermione has advanced to vanishing kittens - does McGonagall not feel weird about that?
- Harry feels comfortable teaching Ron and Hermione DADA, but not with other people like Hermione suggests, which is understandable
- Hermione's time management skills are impressive
- Harry is subconsciously planning lessons - he was meant to be a teacher
- Hermione is still in contact with Viktor Krum and Ron is losing his mind
- Is Ron aware yet of why he is jealous of Krum and his feelings for Hermione?
- Sirius is giving Harry the cold shoulder - grow up Sirius
- We love the trio experiencing their first dodgy pub together - a milestone moment
- Interesting that Alberforth Dumbledore runs a dodgy pub while Dumbledore runs a school
- Lots of people of different years and houses join in to hear from Harry which is great for him to see
- Dean Thomas comes despite Seamus' opinions on Harry and Dumbledore which is nice to see
- Hermione is Harry's PR rep and is doing her best
- Thank goodness for Susan Bones bringing up how powerful Harry is and really saving the day
- Fred and George are great moderators and really help keep the vibes positive and slyly manage the crowd
- It's great that Fred, George, Angelina and others are comfortable with Harry teaching them, despite them being older
- Why was Terry Boot in Dumbledore's office?
- Zacharias Smith is more annoying than we remembered - but each house has an annoying character
- Shay wonders if they should have done more to ensure the secrecy of the meeting and group
- Mundungus being the woman in the black veil is amazing
- It's interesting seeing Luna argue with Hermione, as generally everyone seems to go along with what Hermione says due to seeing her as very intelligent and smart and Hermione is not used to others challenging her like Luna
- It's good for Hermione's development and growth
- Morally Grey Hermione does not tell anyone she has cursed the parchment she has them sign as a fallback security measure and we love this side of her
- Hermione drops that Ginny has a boyfriend - good for her
- We love seeing evidence that Ginny and Hermione have their own separate friendship and share things they don't with Harry and Ron
- Cho couldn't stop looking at Harry during the meeting, and perhaps romance is in the air for them as well

- Umbridge is named the Hogwarts High Inquisitor
- This really feels like government overreach, and bound to create friction when a colleague is evaluating fellow colleagues
- The Daily Prophet interviews Lucius Malfoy for the announcement who is definitely not biased at all
- Ron is so ready for McGonagall to destroy Umbridge and so are we
- Hermione has the annoying habit of wanting to know everyone's marks, and Shay thinks she was Hermione in school
- Umbridge is evaluating Trelawney in Divination and it does not go well
- +1 Sucks point for Umbridge asking Trelawney to predict something for her on the spot
- Interesting how Umbridge follows around Trelawney and takes control over the evaluation, yet she is more subdued in McGonagall and Flitwick's evaluations
- Hermione is kind of a badass when it comes to teachers she does not respect, like Umbridge
- Hermione has read the entire DADA textbook and tells Umbridge she does not agree with the overall thesis and Umbridge hates critical thinking
- +1 sucks point for Umbridge wasting the students time by reading the textbook in class and not being able to discuss the content
- Umbridge crashes out over the previous DADA teachers and Harry agrees that Quirrell was great except for the fact he had Voldemort on the back of his head
- Harry gets detention again but Quirrell having Voldemort on the back of his head is a fact, and surely was Ministry approved at the time
- Angelina and McGonagall tell Harry off for getting detention again
- Umbridge gets some karma as she was not prepared for Minerva McGonagall during her evaluation
- Umbridge tries so hard to get Grubbly-Plank to slag off Dumbledore but she is chill
- Hermione brings up the idea of Harry teaching them DADA as Umbridge is not going to work out

- Sirius has been outed as being in London - he really has no regard for his safety and how much Harry worries about it
- It would of been nice if Fred and George could of been more encouraging to Ron at his first Quidditch practice, knowing how insecure he is
- Draco and co have nothing better to do with their time so they crash the Gryffindor practice
- Percy's owl shows up in the Gryffindor common room - a bad omen?
- Percy's letter to Ron... is not great
- It's nice that Percy wants to congratuate Ron on being Prefect, but then doubling down on cutting out Harry...

- Percy glosses over the estrangement with his family in this letter quite a bit
- It's got to be so hard for Harry to see this as Percy was someone he was close to for four years prior to this

- Sirius has no regard for his safety or how much Harry and co worry about him - planning to turn up in Hogsmede??
- Sirius saying that Harry isn't like his father feels like such a low blow and immature for Sirius
- Does Sirius have an idealized version of James he remembers? We think married, father James in wartime was a lot more responsible that teenage James
- Harry really has to parent Sirius which is so annoying.

- Poor Harry, he has no safe space at the moment
- The propaganda machine is awful
- Hermione is right, how could Dumbledore let this happen?
- The concept of the Ministry restricting students performing magic that they need to practically demonstrate for their OWLs is so dumb
- Fred and George have gone ahead testing their products on students, and Ron is but in a difficult position as prefect
- Hermione threatening the twins with their biggest weakness: telling their mother
- Hermione leaves out handknit hats for the House Elves, putting trash on top in the hopes to free time - we get her intent but it isn't very ethical to trick them
- Could House Elves even be freed this way?
- This doesn't mean Ron should make fun of her knitting attempts! It's a process!
- The professors pushing how important their OWL exams are feels familiar to how High School teachers spoke about how serious University and College would be
- Minne G gives the students a very nice pep talk, where they could all get an O in Transfiguration if they work hard and have confidence in themselves - even Neville!
- Shay thinks they are exaggerating how much homework they have
- Grubbly-Plank is such a great teacher... sorry Hagrid
- Shay does not understand how the points system works at Hogwarts
- Harry needs to stop annoying Grubbly-Plank about Hagrid
- Luna lets Harry know he has her support, and Hermione picks a fight with her
- Why does Luna rub Hermione the wrong way?
- Angelina is channeling Oliver's intensity about Quidditch, we love that for her
- Angelina does not care Harry is being gaslight about Umbridge, she has the team to think about!

- Psychological and physical torture to a minor in your care? Jail!!!!
- Harry does not have parents or an adequate guardian who can advocate for him, which Umbridge knows and takes advantage of
- If this happened to one of the Weasley kids, Molly would be walking up to the school to commit a crime
- Ron has made the Gryffindor Quidditch team! It's such a shame how insecure he is and how it affects his performance
- It's actually great that Angelina focused on picking not the best player, but the player she felt would mesh with the current team the best
- Harry doesn't tell Ron and Hermione what really happened during his detention, which is a shame
- Harry feels that Dumbledore only cares about his scar... which is probably true
- When Umbridge touches Harry, his scar hurts and he wants to talk to someone about this but feels like he can't
- Harry's support system is really being cut off
- Shay thinks a lot of this chapter is connected to needlework

- Harry is not coping well with his peers thinking he is a liar, and is taking it out on Ron and Hermione
- The Twins are advertising for product testers which seems like a bit of a red flag
- Angelina Johnson is the new Griffindor Quidditch Captain - we love women in power
- It is smart for the twins to conduct some kind of market research and not just focus on what they like
- Being dormmates with the twins seems dangerous
- The Twins debated leaving school before their last year - is this something they could actually do?
- Ron and Harry think being an Aurror would be cool but Hermione is considering what she could do with SPEW after Hogwarts
- It is crazy that they need to consider their futures at 15
- Cho approaches Harry but Ron ruins their moment by confronting her about her Quidditch Team
- Harry tries his best to make his potion but Snape won't even let him turn it in despite it not even being the worst in the class - +1 Snape Sucks point
- Potions seems very similar to baking - everything needs to be very exact
- Shay wonders if Snape is being harder on Harry now to prepare him for what is to come. Tori thinks he's just a dick
- Dream analysis would be cool to learn, Harry and Ron are haters
- The trio attend the first DADA lesson with Umbridge, and she treats the class like they are a lot younger and comes off very condescending
- What are Umbridge's qualifications for teaching anyway? The other professors seem to have some real life experience or expertise in their fields
- Umbridge reveals the new course aims, and they kids are not going to be learning defensive magic, only the theory
- Having students use class time to read a textbook is such a waste of time
- When the students complain about not being taught magic (valid), Umbridge decides it is a good idea to slander their previous teachers, and calls Lupin a "half-breed" - so disgusting to to, especially in front of the students. +1 sucks point
- We love Dean standing up for Lupin, and the fact that Imposter Moody was actually a good teacher despite being a criminal
- Pavarti brings up not learning spells during an important exam year - not everyone learns through theory and if this was a normal school year we could see parents being upset
- Harry calls out Umbridge for not learning defensive magic when Voldemort is back
- Umbridge gaslights Harry so hard we have whiplash
- Umbrige telling student to come talk to her if people are speaking about Voldemort and that she is their friend is such a red flag. Adults - especially teachers - should not be friends with students. +1 Sucks point
- Its so hard for Harry to hear how the Ministry stance disrespects Cedric - saying his death is an accident rather than the fact he was murdered in cold blood
- Harry gets sent to McGonagall and she has one of the best lines in the series "have a biscuit, Potter" we stan
- Its so interesting seeing this from Minnie G as she is one of the more proper and strict teachers in the series
- Its really good that Minerva gives Harry this lesson of having to look at the bigger picture - what is happening to him is not right in any regard but he needs to consider the endgame rather than yelling that he is right to everyone who disagrees with him
