    Intro [01:44]

Tennis and the Wimbledon Tournament  [02:19]

Tennis is no perfect game! It is a game that is all about resetting, pivoting, and battling your mind on the court. Christopher Eubanks shows us that during this year's Wimbledon Tournament.

    Wimbledon Tournament 2023 [06:34]

8 Lessons to learn from the game of tennis [09:43]

I tell my daughters, friends, and family about my time playing competitive tennis. Here are the lessons that I still use off the court:

    1. Play one point at a time. Focus on where you are at the moment. You can’t get to the “end of game handshake,” if you are still actively in the game.

    2. To win at life, you have to be gritty. Continue to get up over and over again. Adversity builds the success story.

    3. You can be down several points and still make a comeback. You always have an opportunity to be and do something different. Don’t second guess yourself.

    4. Your attitude and perspective is everything. If you have a sucky attitude about the game or your life, that perspective is going to prevail throughout your day to day to fulfill the prophecy you’ve created for yourself.

    5. Your mind can win or lose your match for you. Go into every moment of adversity knowing you will win and see the other side.

    6. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Just because it’s a loss on the scoreboard, doesn’t mean it’s a loss in life.

    7. Surround yourself with the right people. The right people will provide the wise counsel needed to keep you on the right path.

    8. Always be prepared to seize your moment and take action. You never know when your big win is around the corner. Hone in on your skills, so you don’t have to hesitate in the moments curated for you to shine.

    Intro [01:44]

You’re Stuck in the How  [02:19]

As lawyers, we are expected to have all the answers and be the expert in the room. When we don’t know “the how” of our own dreams and to do items, we become paralyzed. It’s a foreign space for us to be in. It is our job to know what’s best for our clients, sometimes even know their world of work better than themselves! But, when it comes to the most intimate relationship in our lives, the one with ourselves, it is hard to get in motion.

What happens when you get stuck in the how? [5:10]

When we get stuck, we lose ambition. We move on to something easier to wrap our heads around because being uncomfortable and confronting that feeling is the last thing any of us want to do! Your loss of ambition only gives us permission to procrastinate on our dreams and the life we know we deserve!

    Who? [6:30]

Who do you know that is doing what you want to do? Who do you know that can connect you with the people that are doing what you want to do? Asking for help and seeking counsel from other attorney’s doesn’t make you weak! It shows your commitment to the task and yourself. Stop thinking about the finish line and start thinking about who can support you on your journey.

    My Story [10:20]

When I launched into building my coaching services and the Powerhouse Lawyer brand, I had no idea where to start. I had been out of the legal profession for years, at this point. But my commitment to myself and the women that I knew need what I have to offer was much louder than my own doubts. My coach told me to find my people then, and I’m telling you to do the exact same thing! Who do you need to be in relationship with?

    Where do you start? [13:27]

So, I’ve empowered you, gotten you excited for what you can do, now what? Grab your journal, sis! Consider these two questions: How committed are you to your goals? Who do you need to know? Make your list and be honest with yourself. If you’re not as committed to the goal, that may not be where you want to be, it’s time to dig deeper. If you can’t think of who you know that can help you, where do you find the people that can help you?

    Intro [01:44]

    Goldstar Syndrome  [02:13]

Being a perfectionist and having gold star syndrome can be a good thing when used in the right places. However, when practiced too often or in the wrong spaces, we run the risk of becoming incredibly self critical and paralyzed in perfectionism. Make space to celebrate the small wins. It leaves room for you to let go of control.

    Erin’s Goldstar Moment [07:22]

The retreat was a moment I did not pause to celebrate my win. I had pulled together a retreat of 8 incredible women in a matter of weeks. I left the retreat feeling excited and accomplished, yet I only allowed myself to sit in that feeling for seconds. I stole my moment of joy from myself by letting the thoughts of doubt take over. Will I be able to pull this off again? Did this even really happen? Were all of the ladies just playing nice and lying about the experience they had?

    Hustle versus Relaxation [11:27]

When we make space for the small wins, we open doors for relaxation. Perfectionism and gold star syndrome train our bodies and our minds to believe that we aren’t good enough. That we must keep going because we don't deserve to relax. Be brave enough to breathe in the moment, whatever that moment maybe for you. Otherwise, you miss moments with your children, your family, even moments with yourself that you will never get back.

    Tangible Tips [15:03]

Two tips for making space to celebrate your wins, big and small:

    1. Shift your mindset by becoming aware of your thoughts. How are your thoughts influencing your actions? What meaning are you creating about yourself in your head?

    2. Mind your logistics. Make a list of all of the tasks you do on a daily basis. At work, at home, with friends, etc. Now consider, do YOU have to be the one doing all of these things? Is there a way to delegate that would make life easier and more enjoyable for you? How can you stay in your zone of genius as much as possible?

    Closing [22:00]

    Intro [01:44]

    Guest introduction: Aliza Shatzman [02:13]

Aliza is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis Law school. She had intentions to use her legal background to support reproductive services in the United States. Aliza became a clerk to boost her resume and professional development. She founded The Legal Accountability Project after experiencing workplace harassment during her clerkship program.

    Aliza’s Clerkship [04:57]

Aliza shares her experience with gender based harassment with the judge that she was assigned to. After reaching out for support to other lawyer mentors, Aliza was instructed to “stick it out” for the remainder of her clerkship program. Unfortunately, employee dispute plans did not exist where she worked and don’t exist for many other clerkship programs.

Why is the judicial clerkship process important? [11:29]

    The Legal Accountability Project  [16:00]

The Legal Accountability Project is a nonprofit organization founded on Aliza’s experience with workplace harassment. The mission of the organization is to support and protect the clerks throughout their clerkship programs. The most transformative service LAP provides is through building a database of clerk experiences with their previous judge mentor.

    Advice for future clerks [32:50]

Aliza advices future clerks to share their clerkship experience and seek others experiences too. Your experience is not rare. The messaging is that you must stay silent. That helps no one in the long run.

    Intro [01:44]

    Let’s Talk about Overwhelm [03:11]

Overwhelm starts in your mind, affects your body and spirals out of control! It can make you feel like the weight of your world is solely on your shoulders. Here’s how to combat that suffocating feeling and reset.

Braindump your entire to do list [06:22]

Braindumps are your first step to relief. Combine all of your to-do lists items in one place. It’s hard to compartmentalize your life when the expectations are always there, so don’t worry about your work list, kid list, business list – put it all in one place. When we can see it all in front of us, it makes it easier to take stock of what’s really happening.

What is the season that you are in, right now? [08:13]

Evaluate the season of life that you are in. This will help you figure out what matters most to you and where your priorities lie. With your season of life in mind and looking at the to-do list, figure out: what can you eliminate? What can you delegate? Where can you ask for more help? What can you push off? What stuff is not important, right now? In different seasons of life, move things on and off of your plate to help stay focused and be able to breathe day to day.

    Take Action  [10:38]

Action is the key to overwhelm. Take action on the simplest things. This proves to yourself that you can do this! Do the easiest steps first; once you’re in motion, everything else will feel much more manageable.

Create space to quiet your mind [11:57]

Overwhelm is also caused by a lack of pause in your day. For at least 5 minutes a day, get in the car and drive in silence. The silence curates the space to notice your thoughts. Let each one come and go–don’t judge the thoughts, don’t try to fix anything. Silence makes room for your intuition and creativity. We have to turn down the volume in our heads, so we can actually hear ourselves.

    Closing [14:44]

Burnout and overwhelm may be a part of your everyday life, but it doesn't have to be! Here are five action steps that helped me crawl my way out of the weeds of life and into building the life I wanted and knew I deserved. Eliminate overwhelm in life AND law, now!

    Intro [01:44]

    Guest Introduction: Jessica Medina [02:15]

Jessica is a lawyer turned accredited financial counselor. After accruing over two hundred thousand dollars in student loans, becoming a single mom to twins in her 2L year, and graduating from Columbia Law School, Jessica made a massive career shift.

Jessica knew early on that she wanted to be a lawyer– as early as high school. She has dreams of changing the criminal justice system from the inside! With her growing responsibilities as a a mom, it became hard to digest how her career was shaping her life. She had virtually no time with her children. Life became wake up, work, sleep, and repeat.

After transitioning her career to work with the FCC, taking a 50% pay cut, Jessica decides she needed stability. Out launched her work as a financial counselor.

Money Myth: Lawyers aren’t good with money [09:42]

Lawyers are almost always the expert in most rooms we walk in. It's uncomfortable to be put in the opposite seat, where you don’t know anything about what’s going on. Facing the facts of our financial wellbeing is uncomfortable. We have a disinclination to pay attention to math and numbers because that isn’t what our profession is based in! If we reach out for help with our finances, someone else will know our dirty secret. That we aren’t in fact the well paid professional that everyone puts us on the pedestal to be. We don’t know everything.

Single momhood and attorney life [12:15]

Becoming a mom in law school solidified Jessica’s true values. Which made it easier to make hard decisions. Her values changed as her family evolved – stability became more and more important than the dream she created for herself in high school. As a financial counselor, her values have helped her figure out the flexibility needed for herself and her clients as they work through the different phases of their life. Everything is temporary, but what do you need right now?

    Biggest struggles for lawyers  [18:21]

    1. Student Loan Debt. The process to become student loan debt free is sticky because the options are so plentiful and tailored for such specific situations. The average loan debt for law students is $145,000.

    2. Fear of the numbers. Facing the facts of your financial situation is scary. Some people know they aren’t making enough money and don’t want to face the facts. Others are very comfortable with their lifestyle, but don’t know that their current lifestyle isn’t aligned with the goals they say they have for themselves.

    Golden Handcuffs [27:14]

A lot of Jessica’s clients find themselves in the loop of paying for convenience. When you work as much as we all do, we end up paying more for food delivery, last minute vacation flight bookings, or house cleaners. Changing your lifestyle, changes your money and vice versa. Once you shift your life outside of survival mode, you can see where you’re spending your money and time.

Jessica Medina at the first Erin Gerner Retreat [31:00]

Jessica speaks to her experience as a speaker and attendee at my very first retreat! The women that attended were all warm and welcoming. The space was created for each person to be vulnerable about not just their struggles, but also their desires and goals!

    PHL Retreat [00:00]

Join us for an in-person community building experience. Reserve your spot now: https://www.eringerner.com/Powerhouse-Lawyers-Retreat

    Intro [01:44]

    Guest Introduction: Nikki Oden [02:16]

Nikki Oden is a mom, wife, ex attorney, author of But Definitely Wear Mascara, and podcast host. Nikki shares her story as a commercial litigator turned stay at home mom-prenuer.

    Why law school? [04:55]

Like many lawyers, Nikki didn’t go into law school dreaming of defending the everyday person. Nikki wanted to be an actress! Life made its turns and pivoted her into graduating top of her class in South Florida. After six years as a commercial litigation lawyer, Nikki crawled her way out of law!

    Decide what you want [10:20]

One of the hardest things we can do is make everyday decisions. It is even harder when you have to decide what you want. Determining your wants can feel like the biggest bite of life. But it is the best way to beat overwhelm and live the life that you actually deserve. Start small. Take a little bit of time everyday to sit still, listen to yourself, and dream.

    Perfectionism [13:39]

Being a perfectionist is not inherently a negative thing! Finding the right times to turn that dial of perfectionism up and down is key, though. There is no such thing as 100%. There are going to be tons of mistakes! When you’re a perfectionist, you fail to see those mistakes as gifts. Recognize when perfect is necessary and when to just get the task done.

    But Definitely Wear Mascara [17:50]

Nikki’s latest book is written for mom’s that have a business or purpose in their heart that is separate from their roles as a mom and wife. The short chaptered book reminds you that no matter how crazy life is, always make time to do something that is just for you.

Get off the Hot Mess Express [20:00]

Brain dumps are your best weapons against the hot mess express. If you feel like you’re drowning, you’re probably carrying too much in your mind. Take a moment to write everything that is roaming around in your head. From the meeting you need to prep for to the pictures that still aren’t hung in the hallway. Every single thing. When you’re done, take a step back. What on this list do you need to do? What can be delegated? What can be removed from the list altogether?

Tips for the Overwhelmed Mom [25:14]

Are you taking time for yourself? Be honest with yourself about the time that you have, now. Even if it’s five minutes, take the time and use it on yourself. Silent moments in the car, eating lunch by yourself, or taking a long shower at night. Carve out the time for yourself and guard it like your life depends on it. The people in your life need you to pour into yourself!

    Guest Introduction: Amy Impellizzeri [02:16]

Amy is our guest for this episode of Powerhouse Lawyers. She’s a decorated and well awarded speaker, author, and lawyer. Amy has a background in corporate litigation. This episode takes on a journey of Amy’s unique career to using her law degree in some of the more unorthodox ways.

The Law Attracts Very Creative People [08:30]

Despite popular belief the law attracts very creative people. Starting a law firm, choosing the kind of clientele you want to serve, and finding loopholes to support your client in any case are all acts of creativity.

Being both mom and attorney [10:00]

When Amy started growing her family, she was quickly taken off the partner track. Keeping her children from the front row of the office conversation was top priority for the firm in upholding expectations for what it meant to be a lawyer within their team. Amy recounts feeling gratitude for the partners allowing her to keep being a lawyer, while being a mom. The price of that was high. She was made to feel like her life outside of the office should be second tier on her priorities. As if she couldn’t do both!

Tips to a young lawyer [17:09]

When it comes to being a young lawyer, Amy advises that we remember two big pieces of advice she was given:

    1. You are indispensable. The firm and your team need you despite what they say or try to make you believe.

    2. You don’t always have to leave the law entirely. You may be in the wrong area or section of the law. Push yourself to experience what practicing law looks like outside of the four walls of your firm.

    3. Decide what you want the world of law to look like for those that come after you and work towards that.

    The obituary exercise [22:23]

What do you want people to say about you in your obituary? Can you imagine people standing around at your funeral reminiscing on their experiences with you? What are they saying? You don’t have to wait for tragedy to strike for you to think about your legacy.

Women going to law school [27:57]

Women that are looking to start the track to practicing law, consider a couple of things before you make the leap:

    • Why do you want to go to law school? Really, why? If it's to make someone else happy, to make a lot of money, or because you think it will earn you respect–head back to the drawing board. Those reasons aren’t quite good enough.

    • You can be a lawyer, but that’s not the only thing that can accompany a law degree. Research the kind of law you want to practice and who is doing it in a way you admire. You might be surprised by what you find.

    What’s next for Amy? [30:55]

Amy shares that she is currently writing a legal drama that has film and series interest! Be on the lookout for her on the shelves (and potentially on screen).

    Guest Questions [37:39]

    Amy answers 2 questions:

    1. If there is one thing she could go back and tell her younger lawyer self, what would it be?

    2. What is your unique superpower?

  • 6. Ditch the “Should” Game - Jennifer Jones

Welcome back to Powerhouse Lawyers with Erin Gerner!

    Intro [00:00]

    Introducing Jennifer Jones [00:30]

Jennifer Jones is a direct sales representative expert. She transformed her career from working in medical sales to building a business on her terms in network marketing! I talk with her about what exactly got her to make the shift and add more flexibility in her financial life.

    Corporate Brainwashing [06:00]

Transitioning from 9 to 5 work to hopping off the hamster wheel of trading her time for money, Jennifer refused to allow someone else tell her how much she was worth. She refused to let someone else have a say in what her salary cap was.

How Jennifer knew she could take on network marketing [08:25]

A big part of Jennifer’s leap into entrepreneurship was the realization that she was the one in control. There was no one waiting to tell her what and when to do the things to take care of herself and her family. The moment Jenifer felt like she was cheating on her 9 to 5 with her network marketing side hustle is when she knew she had to bet on herself.

    Direct Selling [10:41]

Direct sales is not as complicated as people like to make it seem! At its core, direct sales is the act of affiliating products. This kind of business allows people to dip their toe in entrepreneurship, create a little financial breathing room, and generate a few extra hundred dollars per month. Most of all, creating your second stream of income gives you money to invest in your dream, whatever that looks like for you.

How Jennifer laid the foundation for entrepreneurship [13:53]

Entrepreneurship is not just generating money on your own. Most specifically, it is the repetitive act of seeking the time to be thoughtful with yourself and curating your life on purpose.

    Ignite and Launch Society [20:47]

Jennifer leads a group of women that have made a career of network marketing. These are women that she teaches to not feel guilty for wanting to make money and lots of it!

    Jennifer’s Daughters [24:24]

Every step of the way through Jennifer’s business, she is able to reinforce the lessons she is learning in entrepreneurship to her daughters. Breaking generational wounds, curses, stories, and beliefs. Jennifer teaches her clients AND daughters  that money is power. Money is freedom.

Advice to the lawyer listening [29:03]

Jennifer advises us to continue to build community with people that are aligned with the vision that we have for ourselves. Build that community by not being afraid to talk to other people and create new connections. One tangible step: schedule a meeting with a potential partner. Whether that’s a mentor, accountability partner, future business partner, etc. – schedule a mutually beneficial meeting that allows you to extend a wider net in your network. Finally, Jennifer urges us to follow the little nudges that tug at us in the back of our minds – its trying to tell us that there is more out there for us.

    Guest Questions [31:18]

    Jennifer answers 2 questions:

    1. If there is one thing she could go back and tell her younger lawyer self, what would it be?

    2. What is your unique superpower?

  • 5. Molly Hough - Building a Book of Business

Welcome back to Powerhouse Lawyers with Erin Gerner!

    Intro [00:00]

    Introducing Molly Hough, Esq [00:30]

Molly Hough is a practicing lawyer out of Minnesota. She also founded the JurisConsult Institute, where she trains other lawyers on how to do their best work practicing law in their communities. With a background in nonprofit management and no family associated with legal work, Molly shares how she made the pivot to life as an attorney.

The difference between practicing law and getting law business [09:00]

Practicing law and securing business as a lawyer are both problem solving skills. The skill of producing business for your firm is what creates sustainability for your career. So many women are well equipped to practice law, but struggle with booking business.

Why do lawyers struggle with getting business? [11:09]

As law students we aren’t taught how to book business. The expectation for building business for ourselves wasn’t set. We aren’t told we can exceed the financial ceiling that our employer sets for us. What we fail to realize as lawyers, booking business is what gets us to the coveted partnership positions with bigger checks. We have to learn to bring new clientele to the table, not just be a good lawyer.

    Tips for building business [16:01]

    1. Decide what actually matters. What’s the purpose of everything you are doing? What’s the ROI from everything you’re doing professionally?

    2. Know who your ideal clients are.

    3. What problem do you solve for your client?

    4. What is your unique solution for your ideal client?

    5. What problems are my ideal clients having?

Determine your strengths based networking style [19:21]

Figure out the networking model that works within your strengths. Do you like speaking? Are you better in one on one? Are you better in groups? What does it look like to network online?

    Write down 8 - 12 referrals [20:49]

Who do you already know that are referrals? What other practice areas serve your ideal clients? Make relationships with other people doing similar work – they may have too much on their plate and vice versa.

We do not need to do it all [22:01]

The big goal is to empower you to work smart and take items off of your plate that are not serving you or getting you towards your goal. We do not need to be the gold star winner of business building. Success comes when you lean into doing business and life YOUR way.

Building community within your business [24:50]

We’ve been given the narrative that lawyers are competing for business against one another. There is so much power in creating connection and community, than feeding into competition. There is enough for everyone. You do not have community just because you hangout with your coworkers. Community is the way you can build relationships outside of your firm.
