SHOWNOTES:
Why your values are so important [01:50]
Your values serve as the building blocks of the foundation of your life. Everything flows from your values. When your foundation is solid, life doesn’t feel so hard and overwhelming. Your values will guide you through your priorities from day to day.
Values in Action [06:48]
Knowing your values allows you to focus on doing things that add to the core of your personal life’s mission. Two examples that I recall from knowing my values: one, I recently turned down an awesome coaching opportunity. Not because there was anything wrong with the group I would have worked with, but my values told me my integrity, my family, my fun matter more than adding something else onto my plate, right now. Secondly, years ago, after having my first baby and coming back to the office from maternity leave, I struggled! My family was important to me, but everything about being in the office and the world of law didn’t quite align with my values and the new phase of life I was stepping into. Values give you life parameters. They are the guardrails for when you’re trying to make a strike in your lane.
Identify your values through your priorities [11:39]
Identifying your values is going to start with you having a journal! Get one, you’ll want to take inventory of how you change over time.
When we think about our top priorities, let’s frame them in these categories:
Career
Health
Finance
Relationships
Spiritual
With these categories in mind, answer this: if you could not fail, what would you want? What does a 10 out of 10 in each of these categories look and feel like? It’s time to get intentional about what you want and identify those core values associated with your vision.

Erin’s Birthday [0:42]
It’s my birthday! The last 365 days have been a whirlwind of events and emotions. Most of all, I’ve had to make big and scary CHANGE. Not only did my family move out of Dallas, Texas to a smaller town on the outskirts, but my career has made dramatic leaps. My family and I have had to make new friends. We are debt free for the first time in our lives! All of this required me to bet on myself.
Common Themes of Change [05:42]
There are three big themes that I’ve had to acknowledge over the last year in order to transform my life. The first being “the past is only to glance back to learn.” Keyword: glance. Birthday’s often come around and it forces us to reflect on what we were doing this time last year and who we said we would be, but aren’t. Decide to recognize the difference between your expectations for who and what you are now versus gratitude for who and what you are now.
Get comfortable in the uncomfortable [09:30]
If you already know how to do everything, then you’re not stretching yourself enough. Truthfully, you just might be playing small. We talked about that last week. There is a healthy amount of discomfort which fosters growth. Lean into that! On the other side of discomfort is clarity!
It’s okay to pivot [12:57]
As a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser, I’m living witness that life is about constant pivots. As I always say, we have to take big and messy action. That requires us to let go of other people’s expectations for our lives and decide to intentionally curate the life we want on our own terms.

Welcome back to Powerhouse Lawyers with Erin Gerner!
Intro [0:00]Are you playing small? [00:26]
You showing up everyday trying not to be too loud or assertive, feeling like you have to apologize for being you, is you playing small, love. The secret sauce to putting a stop to that not-so empowering behavior? Community.
May Retreat [01:18]I hosted my very first retreat for women in law, last week. My main takeaway: none of us felt like we had to play small around each other. In fact, we spent most of that time lifting each other up in our individual super powers. There is MAGIC in creating a community with like-minded people.

Playing Small [05:31]Life’s every day tasks can trick us into believing that we are showing up as 100% our best selves. But, if you’ve ever thought that you were being too loud, or too smart, or too funny, or too assertive… guess what, babe? You too have been playing small.
The Power of Community in the Law [09:25]There are more women out there that are looking to create community amongst themselves. When we create space for ourselves and others, we tap into:
The career and life opportunities that not playing small presents
Access to women that show you what is possible and how to dream a little bigger
A badass group of women that are coming behind you to push you forward every step of the way
