  • Michael Liss On Franchising As A Way To Own Your Practice

About Michael Liss: He is a Franchise Attorney, with FRANLAW® - The Franchise Law Experts. Michael Liss has represented over a thousand franchisees, franchisors and other clients. He has served as in-house General Counsel for nationally known franchisors. He is a member of the State of Illinois Attorney General’s Franchise Advisory Board. Michael helps create new franchise systems, and he helps people buy franchises to start and succeed. He is a member of the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising, the International Franchise Association, the American Franchisee Association and the American Association of Franchisees & Dealers. Mr. Liss is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.

In this episode, Carl White and Michael Liss discuss:

    • Main benefits to franchising
    • The main conflict on franchise relationships
    • How to become a franchisor
    • Giving your franchise a chance

    Key Takeaways:

    • The main benefits of franchising is better business management and better marketing. The practitioner will benefit more on the system and the branding that franchisors provide so that the medical professional can just focus on doing what they do best.
    • Franchisors have their own system, their own way of doing business. They would want the franchisee to stick to that system at all times. The conflict begins when the franchisee starts to deviate from the system or do things differently.
    • In order to become a franchisor, you need to have established your brand’s success. You need to have systems, a brand that’s trademarked, and you need to be making a lot of money. You would also need to adopt a trainer or coach personality, because that is essentially what you’ll be doing for your franchisees.
    • When you buy a franchise, surrender to their system. You paid for it, might as well give it a chance to work. There are certain ways to do things efficiently and franchises have set up systems for a reason - because it worked for them.

“If you’re a little too independent, a little too “my way” it’s gonna be hard to implement somebody else’s system. You have to want that. You’re all in. There’s a system, there’s a way.” - Michael Liss

  • Don Tietz on Selling Your Practice But Keeping Your Ownership

About Don Tietz: For over 30 years Don Tietz has been a leader in the world of business development and operations for practices in healthcare. For the past decade + he’s held leadership positions in larger dermatology practices in finance and operations. Currently he’s the VP of Operations with Dermatology Associates of LaGrange. Don’s special skills are identifying high potential business opportunities and launching successful new ventures. Additionally, Don has particular expertise in turning around operations that are struggling through tough economic times and have a hard time getting the financing they need. His goal with everywhere he goes is to move a struggling situation beyond survival and into prosperity

In this episode, Carl White and Don Tietz discuss:

    • How does the ESOP work?
    • ESOP is a qualified retirement plan
    • The size of the organization matters
    • Flexibility and opting out early

    Key Takeaways:

    • ESOP is a qualified retirement plan that’s not so different from a 401k plan. The practice becomes a tax-exempt organization and it benefits every shareholder in your business. The government gets their money when you retire and cash out.
    • Find a trustee and get them to become the manager of the shares. They buy the business from you and they distribute the stock to all the employees based on a certain criteria. The value of the company sets the value of your stock.
    • The size of the organization matters. You have to be at a certain point in your business in order for this to make sense. The bigger the organization the better it is for everyone in terms of returns and being able to handle whatever comes.
    • Even if you’ve got the plan running in your organization, there is still an element of flexibility involved. You can still decide to opt out prematurely if that is part of your business strategy.

“Just by showing up and doing your job, you’re gonna be granted these shares. You don’t have to take a penny out of your pocket, it’s not reducing your take-home pay at all and you’re gonna get benefits from it.” - Don Tietz

Aashi provides strengths-based executive coaching through an individualized program that is designed to enhance management acumen, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence.

In this episode, Carl White and Aashi Arora discuss:

    • How a  private practice benefits from high levels of engagement
    • Difference between engaged, disengaged, and actively disengaged employees
    • The little things that make a big difference
    • Creating a mission statement that people see and understand

    Key Takeaways:

    • Money, trips, and gifts won’t guarantee that your employees will stay in your practice. Higher levels of engagement is directly connected to higher levels of productivity. You need to get your engaged group larger.
    • It’s often the little things that make a big difference. Communicate your expectations clearly, never assume. Make sure that staff have materials and equipment that’s enough for them to work well and comfortably.
    • Create a mission statement and make sure that it is visible and that everyone is aware that it is important. In order for people to dedicate their time into it, they need to see it and they need to understand it.

“If there is a piece of paper in the hallway, an engaged person will pick it up and throw it away. A disengaged person will probably ignore it, while an actively disengaged person will probably add more trash in the hallway.” - Aashi Arora

  • Joe Campagna on Finding Good Merchant Services For The Long Haul

Joe Campagna took over running Grant Merchant Services in 2007 when his step-dad, Gary Glowinski suddenly passed away. Coming from the worlds of finance, tech and hospitality, Joe jumped feet first into the deep end, learning on the fly to manage and grow an existing portfolio. 15 years later, Joe has taken GMS to new levels with clients across the country. GMS works with a variety of clients from B2B and B2C merchants. His goal is to demystify the world of payments and find the best solution for GMS clients.

When Joe isn’t busy at work, he’s cheering on his Wisconsin Badgers, playing in an “old man” hockey league and trying to keep up with his 5-year-old twin daughters.

In this episode, Carl White and Joe Campagna discuss:

    • Transparency and perfection in merchant services
    • Choosing people that pick up the phone
    • Focusing on what you do best
    • Looking out for red flags

    Key Takeaways:

    • When looking for any service, always choose people that offer full transparency and a willingness to meet your needs perfectly, or as close to your perfect ideal as possible.
    • Pick up the phone, even if it’s angry customers. Don’t hide from hard questions, take that bullet because it goes a long way. In the same way, make sure that when you choose a company, you choose one that takes your calls when something goes wrong.
    • If something feels weird or if something feels wrong, you might be onto something. Try to look into it. Be wary of not having many choices or of not having an open market because that tends to have higher costs.

“I find out how they do it then I ask, ‘in a perfect world, what would you like?’ … I start to look at what are the costs involved to get you to the perfect situation… and if I can’t get to perfect, how close can I get…” - Joe Campagna

  • William Schiller in Hiring Foreign Nationals in a Tight Job Market

About William Schiller: He practices immigration law in Chicago and he also teaches international human rights law as a faculty member at Northwestern University. He lectures and publishes extensively in immigration law and his client base is national. His practice involves the representation of individual and corporate clients, including physicians in a broad range of immigration matters including nonimmigrant and immigrant visas.

In this episode, Carl White and William Schiller discuss:

    • Looking at your business like the government would
    • The responsibility of the employer
    • Going for the legit path
    • Finding good sources of information

    Key Takeaways:

    • Take a step back and look at your business like the government would. Make sure that your taxes are paid, your revenue is shown, and that your business really does have a need for this worker.
    • Hiring from outside the company isn’t actually like hiring cheap labor, you will have to show your ability to pay prevailing wage. There is also a lot of responsibility expected from the employer.
    • Always go for the legit path. Don’t get into trouble with the law, don’t take shortcuts.
    • Find good sources of information, if not from a lawyer than at least from trustworthy websites. The American Immigration Lawyer Association is an excellent source to follow immigration law.

“The common thread in most worker visas is we need to show the employer’s ability to pay. Immigration’s not gonna give it to you if you don’t have history.” - William Schiller

  • Steven Baron on Suing for Defamation Over a 1 Star Review

About Steven Baron: For more than 30 years, Steve Baron has counseled businesses on intellectual property matters and helped clients resolve complex commercial disputes.  He has counseled and represented clients in defamation and privacy matters, in and out of court.

In this episode, Carl White and Steven Baron discuss:

    • What defamation is
    • When an opinion crosses the line
    • Going in with your eyes open
    • Proactively cultivating a positive reputation

    Key Takeaways:

    • Defamation is when someone makes a false statement of fact published to a third party with some level of negligence and damage.
    • It’s perfectly okay to express an opinion. A statement is defamatory when a reviewer brings up a statement of facts that are proven false.
    • Think considerably before taking action. Even if you have a strong case for your side, decide if it’s worth the risk of losing - go into it with your eyes open and understand what your objectives are.
    • Go offensive with the positive. Be proactive in cultivating a positive online reputation.

“...lawyers arguing in court when something crosses that line from opinion, which is constitutionally protected speech into potential false statement of facts which may be considered defamatory. The line is not always bright so that’s why a doctor who finds himself or herself in that situation and is upset enough to wanna think about legal action should obviously talk with a lawyer first…” - Steven Baron

  • Matt Deutschman on Saying Thank You at Scale

Matt Deutschman: He is the fourth generation in his family in the promotional products industry and founded Doubletake Promotional Marketing in 2010.  Doubletake focuses on strategy over product, to help convert clients into referral sources, recruits into team members, employees into brand advocates, and customers into raving fans.

In this episode, Carl White and Matt Deutschman discuss:

    • Why should you give gifts?
    • Making giving more convenient
    • The return on investment of giving
    • Maintaining relationships with gifts

    Key Takeaways:

    • Giving gifts is is a good way to keep business at the top of your recipient’s minds and make a valuable touch point.
    • Systematizing your giving doesn’t take the altruism or the heart out of it. Rather, it just makes it more convenient for a busy you who doesn’t have time to run your business while individually giving personalized gifts to each relationship.
    • You’re not always going to see the benefits of giving right away, but there definitely is a lot of pay-off from appreciating people, especially with gifts.
    • It’s a universal truth that one of the most expensive things to do in business is acquire a new customer but once that customer is acquired, it becomes less expensive to maintain them. So maintaining customers is cheaper than acquiring new ones.

“It’s not rocket science, and it’s also not removing the personal element - it’s genuinely, authentically saying thank you for something that has been clearly a win-win situation in the past….” - Matt Deutschman

  • Natalie Hunt: Good Firing Starts With Good Hiring

About Natalie Hunt: She is a leadership coach for new leaders. She specializes in helping doctor-owners learn to lead and manage their employees and their clinics. Natalie has a masters degree in Organizational Leadership and extensive leadership coach training. She speaks and coaches at leadership conferences across the country.

In this episode, Carl White and Natalie Hunt discuss:

    • Never hire out of desperation
    • Questioning your negative thoughts
    • Money isn’t the primary cause of the great resignation
    • Finding ways to put success in your own hands

    Key Takeaways:

    • Hiring out of desperation comes from a part of our brain that always focuses on the negative and scarcity. Never hire out of desperation.
    • Pause and question your negative thoughts. Doubt your doubts. Challenge the thought that it’s unsolvable. Open yourself up to the possibility that there could be a way and your brain will start to think about that.
    • Money isn’t one of the top 5 reasons that the great resignation happened. It’s toxic culture, job insecurity, high levels of innovation, failure to recognize performance, and COVID related reasons.
    • Always find a way to put success in your own hands. It’s not their job to find your company, it’s your job to find someone and make your business attractive.

“Write down all the things that you believe about hiring - why it’s hard, why you don’t want to do it, why it’s not working and those will feel like facts… Write them all down and be willing to be wrong about them” - Natalie Hunt

  • Danny Schuman on  Helping Your Practice Stand Out From Your Competition

Danny Schuman is a Brand Storyteller and Executive Coach, and the Founder and Head Twister at Twist Your Thinking. Since 2009, he’s worked with people and brands to help them find better answers, tell better stories, and get better results. He’s successfully partnered with not-for-profits like Giving Rocks Foundation and Learning Bridge Early Education Center, and Fortune 500 companies like PepsiCo, MillerCoors, and Mars.

Before Twist, Danny wrote and creative-directed marketing campaigns that helped build iconic brands like Quaker Oatmeal, Coors Light, and Gatorade. He and Michael Jordan started working on Gatorade on the same day and created many commercials together. Michael called Danny “Peanut Butter Jelly Boy,” but that’s a story for another time.

In this episode, Carl White and Danny Schuman discuss:

    • Starting with your “why”
    • Focusing on who you are
    • Reader-focused marketing
    • Asking “why” five times

    Key Takeaways:

    • The best way to differentiate is to start with your “why” - why do you do what you do the way that you do. What makes you different from the thousands of others who can do your job?
    • People don’t buy from a company, they buy from the people behind that company. Buyers want to see that human element - talk about yourself, what you believe, what’s something that happened to you or something you’re interested in that makes you better at what you do?
    • People want to know what’s relevant to them, whatever that must be. Have a good understanding of what people want to know from you and about you
    • Ask your clients “why” five times. Get down under the surface, find out that really insightful reason, that really unexpected thing that you do that people choose you for.

“We wanna say so many things about ourselves, the more you say the less people can comprehend. Long lists are the products of lazy minds. Think of the one, or maybe the two. What’s the one or two things that you’re gonna focus on…” - Danny Schuman

  • Sruhad Patel On Getting The Best Medical Malpractice Insurance Rate

Sruhad has been a member of the Alera HPL team since 2011, joining through Flagship Healthcare. Having worked with hundreds of medical practices over the years, he excels in providing insurance solutions for all types of practices. Taking the time to understand the needs of the practices he works with, he draws upon his vast experience to provide affordable coverage options. Sruhad is licensed and active in over 20 states and is an expert in the various state regulations that impact medical professional liability coverage options. Sruhad studied Finance at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In this episode, Carl White and Sruhad Patel discuss:

    • Broadening your options when choosing medical malpractice insurance
    • Before you renew your policy
    • A common misconception that many miss
    • How negotiating directly is counterintuitive

    Key Takeaways:

    • Medical malpractice insurance doesn’t have to be a burdensome thing to pay, there are a lot of options out there that might give you a better deal.
    • Check out the competing carriers every time you go through a renewal. Even better, get a broker or agent’s opinion on it.
    • There’s a misconception that going directly to an insurance company is going to get people a lower price. You actually have to pay the same price, only it will take a lot of time for you to seek out each carrier and it will take a lot of research if you don’t have any knowledge in insurance.
    • Negotiating with the insurance company directly would be counterintuitive. Yes you can take the time and the effort to seek out your own policy, but be warned of what you’re getting yourself into in these contractual agreements.

“As a practice or physician, make sure you shop it. Just like any other policy or commodity that you have. You have to make sure that you have the best pricing available.” - Sruhad Patel
