  • Dr. Ingrid Liu on Success as a Direct Primary Care Doctor

    • Switching practice models from traditional to concierge to Direct Primary Care

  • Jeremy Pope in Developing Sales Skills in Your Practice

Jeremy Pope owns and runs Sales Call Overhaul, which helps business owners fix the things in their sales process that “make selling suck”. He says, “it’s fun going beyond the boring industry standard close-rate of 15.5%”. He says, “I was never a super-talented salesperson with crazy charisma” and he even hated marketing and sales for the first couple of years in his entrepreneurial journey. After honing his sales craft in a “non-talented way”, he was finally able to let his new “giver process” do the heavy lifting and he became a top salesperson. He went on to become the sales manager of a team that made $1.7 Million per month in revenue and then he started a consulting business, training teams for international businesses like direct-marketing giant Guthy Renker. From there he became the client success director for Traffic and Funnels and to this day, he still does sales coaching with some private coaching clients.

In this episode, Carl White and Jeremy Pope discuss:

    • What sales really is about
    • Creating and following a recipe in your business
    • Key performance indicators and metrics
    • Getting people to tell the truth in an interview

    Key Takeaways:

    • The common misconception is that good sales is all about giving a good pitch, but actually, it’s all about listening to your patient.
    • You need to hear what the other person is actually talking about, that’s one of the biggest things you could do as a provider. Have a clear process, a recipe, and let the process do the heavy lifting.
    • When hiring for a role you’re not sure about, it’s important to keep research and write down key performance indicators and any other way to apply a metric.
    • There are a lot of ways to tell if somebody is being truthful when in an interview, but the best and simplest way is to ask for a lot of details.

“If we can get an emotional diagnosis in addition to the physical… that makes a tremendous difference, it’s a huge amount of leverage in that conversation.” - Jeremy Pope

  • Michael Resnick: Financial Planning During a Bear Market

About Michael Resnick: As a Certified Financial Planner, he along with his team help ensure that my clients and their loved ones are financially secure for the future. Through creating a comprehensive financial plan, he individually tailors their portfolios to accomplish their goals.  Everything begins with values based planning and that remains throughout the relationship.

In this episode, Carl White and Michael Resnick discuss:

    • What is values-based financial planning?
    • Do good and do well
    • Finding a planner you can trust
    • Investing with a long-term view

    Key Takeaways:

    • Values-based planning starts with recognizing what it is that you value in life the most and building a financial plan from there.
    • Medical practice ownership is a difficult career. Anyone who practices has to have an aspect about the job that’s fulfilling to them. The best way to do good is to do good while doing well.
    • There’s no legal issue with calling yourself a financial advisor, anyone can call themselves that but to be a financial planner, you have to study, pass the exam and be certified. If you’re talking to a financial advisor, find out the depth and scope of what he/she is capable of doing for you.
    • You need to be able to withstand the fluctuations of the moment and not look at it on a day-to-day, moment to moment basis. Instead, look at it with a long-term view.

“What happens day to day, moment to moment, should not be affecting your true retirement as long as you take a long-term view. If the market drops and you react, now you’ve actually given away money.” - Michael Resnick

  • Dr. Ashley White on Finding Your Inner Entrepreneur

About Dr. Ashley White: She is an industry leader in challenging the weight-as-health dogma. Her groundbreaking work with Responsive Eating ™ has encouraged a critical shift in the medical field in the way people with larger bodies are perceived and treated. As a trusted clinician, educator, and parent, Dr. Ashley White’s mission is to use her signature methodology of Responsive Eating™ to facilitate appetite literacy so that people in larger bodies can unlearn, push back against, and liberate themselves from diet culture. She is a family and emergency medicine doctor by training, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, though she doesn't use the term "obesity" in regular practice.

In this episode, Carl White and Dr. Ashley White discuss:

    • Growing into becoming an entrepreneur
    • Softening the blow of expenses
    • Taking your time back
    • Diving into starting your own practice

    Key Takeaways:

    • Some people aren’t born an entrepreneur but still end up being one. The journey to business ownership can begin by finding what you’re passionate about and recognizing what’s hindering you from contributing to that in your current situation.
    • Starting out with owning your own practice might require you to pursue other means of income while you’re building your business. It will soften the blow of the expenses.
    • Create an intimate relationship with your patients but also make sure that you don’t get slaughtered by the amount of work you have to do. You need to take your time back.
    • In starting your own practice, you have to have something that you believe you can do better. You also need to understand that risk is a fact of life, if it feels uncomfortable to try it and there’s an exit ramp, then do it.

“I have this compelling optimism to say that this current system is not working, I believe there is another way, I will not get trapped in the negativity of there not being another way to do a good primary care. ” - Dr. Ashley White

  • Dr. Doug Lucas on Making a BIG Change & Opening his Private Practice

About Dr. Doug Lucas: He is a board certified orthopedic surgeon that left the traditional health care model to pursue an integrative health optimization practice called Optimal Human Health. He uses lifestyle, genetics, blood and functional testing to create custom plans for his patients.

In this episode, Carl White and Dr. Doug Lucas discuss:

    • Who is your ideal patient?
    • Serving a unique patient base
    • Practicing your passion

    Key Takeaways:

    • Create a patient avatar, or an ideal patient profile. You need to identify who it is you want to serve before you can attract them to your practice.
    • Seek to serve a niche or an underserved patient population. Especially if you have a passion for these unique cases and a treatment that would be very beneficial to them.
    • Before you burn out and break down, you need to consider how you can be in the area of what you’re passionate about. If you don’t want to do a big shift, then think of creative ways in which you can implement your passion into what you’re already doing.

  • Lesley Wallerstein: You Have More Intellectual Property Than You Think

Lesley Wallerstein: She is a graduate of MIT and a former patent examiner, Lesley knows how to write patent and trademark applications that stand up to competition and stand up in court.

In this episode, Carl White and Lesley Wallerstein discuss:

    • Making money with patented properties
    • Patenting your practice name
    • Protecting yourself early
    • How to benefit from patenting your IPs

    Key Takeaways:

    • A patent gives the person holding it the exclusive right to make or sell or license the product and method. That exclusivity is what’s worth money.
    • Your practice name counts as intellectual property and it’s worth protecting. It helps in building your reputation and distinguishing yourself from businesses around you that provide the same services.
    • Protect yourself early and you will save yourself a lot of pain later on. You would be familiar with the cliche saying that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure and that is true as well in the case of intellectual property
    • Having patented intellectual properties makes your services more desirable. It really emphasizes the originality and legitimacy of your product or services if it is patented.

“Your intellectual property is an asset of your business in the same way as your equipment or any other physical, tangible property.” - Lesley Wallerstein
