One thing that every single person shares–no matter where they live or what circumstances they live in–is the experience of time. From the moment of our conception, we feel the pull of time. It is all we know. And yet God does not share that perception or experience of time.

I was looking at a number of different quotes about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and began to see this massive set of beliefs that have grown up around her. I imagined her surrounded by this whole scaffold of theology and iconography and ritual, and belief. And at the center of that is a remarkable-yes-but ultimately a very human girl who became a very human mother of the most extraordinary child ever born. Let’s try to strip away the scaffolding today and look at Mary, pregnant with Jesus.
