LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 18, 2022 | Sunday of the Fourth Week of Advent
"Drop down dew from above, you heavens, and let the clouds rain down the Just One; let the earth be opened and bring forth a Savior." - Is. 45:8
This is the last Sunday of our preparation for Christmas, the anniversary of Christ's birth. Like Joseph, we can all feel unworthy of the honor of welcoming him into our hearts and our homes. We are indeed unworthy, not because we have little of this world's goods, but because we have so little humility, so little charity, so little faith and trust in God's goodness. Let us try to imitate Joseph and Mary, the humblest of the humble, the kindliest of the kindly, and the greatest-ever believers in God's goodness and mercy. We can never hope to equal them, but we can follow them humbly, from afar. (Catholicculture.org)
As one family of God, let us praise and thank the Lord for the gift of a new day through the ancient tradition of the Office of Lauds. Listen, share and subscribe to Sunday's Morning Prayer here: https://anchor.fm/dailymorningprayer

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 17, 2022 | Saturday of the Third Week of Advent
"Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ." - Matthew 1:1-17
We begin, today, an “octave” of immediate preparation for the birth of Christ. After this octave, we enter into the glorious Solemnity of Christmas!
As we reflect on the genealogy of Jesus, we marvel once again that he has entered so fully into the human family, that he has taken our humanity, in order to share with us his own divine life. Because God has entered into the human family, a way is opened for us to enter into God's "family" - the eternal community of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. By faith and baptism, we are grafted onto a new family tree, the Body of Christ, the Church.
As one family of God, let us praise and thank the Lord for the gift of a new day through the ancient tradition of the Office of Lauds. Listen, share and subscribe to Saturday's Morning Prayer here: https://anchor.fm/dailymorningprayer

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 15, 2022 | Thursday of the Third Week of Advent
"But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place..." - Luke 1:20
Faith grows in silence. Too often we listen to all the fears and excuses and justifications that arise in our minds, and we allow them to interfere with God's plan. Human words can get in the way of the divine word. We need to listen more and speak less. By fostering an interior silence, we allow the word of God to penetrate our barren hearts and make them fruitful.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 14, 2022 | Memorial of St. John of the Cross, Priest and Doctor of the Church
"Where there is no love, put love - and you will find love." - St. John of the Cross
John of the Cross was born in Spain in 1542 of poor and simple parents, from whom he learned the importance of self-sacrificing love. At the age of fourteen, he took a job caring for hospital patients who suffered from incurable diseases. This experience led him to search for beauty and happiness in God alone. He entered and was ordained a priest in the Carmelite order and later, along with St. Teresa of Avila, began to reform the Order to its former life of prayer, which led to his imprisonment by his own brothers. Reduced to nothing by poverty and persecution, he experienced the intensity of divine love, which became the basis of the great mystical works he gave the Church, including Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night of the Soul. He died in 1591.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 13, 2022 | Memorial of St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
Lucy was born around 283 in Syracuse, Sicily, of a rich and noble Christian family. After her father's death, her mother arranged a marriage for her, not knowing that Lucy had made a vow of virginity. Later her mother agreed with Lucy's desire to give herself to God. In his rage, her disappointed suitor denounced her as a Christian to Paschasius, the governor of Sicily. In 304, during the reign of Diocletian, she was tortured for her faith and finally stabbed to death.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 12, 2022 | Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
"Am I not here, I, who am your Mother?" - message of Our Lady to Juan Diego
The shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, near Mexico City, is one of the most celebrated places of pilgrimage in North America. On December 9, 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to an Indian convert, Juan Diego, and left with him a beautiful picture of herself impressed upon his cloak. This miraculous image has proved to be ageless and is kept in the shrine built in her honor, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Today, Our Lady of Guadalupe is invoked as the Patroness of the Americas and of the Philippines. During his visit to the Shrine in 1999, St. John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Mary's loving protection, and placed the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born under her motherly care.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 11, 2022 | Third Sunday of Advent - Gaudete Sunday
"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near." - Entrance antiphon
Today is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice." The celebrants have an option to wear rose-colored vestments to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose-colored candle on our Advent wreath.
As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Savior means for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing nigh when the Lord will come again in His glory to lead them into His kingdom. The oft-repeated Veni ("Come") of Advent is an echo not only of the prophets but also of the conclusion of the Apocalypse of St. John: "Come, Lord Jesus," the last words of the New Testament.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 10, 2022 | Saturday of the Second Week of Advent
"Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved." - Ps. 80
How is the Word burning your heart?
The word of the Lord is like a fire that purifies, enlightens and energizes the hearts that are open and welcome. Part of our Advent preparation is to draw near enough to the word of God to let it burn us. To change our hearts, we need more than good intentions; we need divine power, the fire of God's word.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 9, 2022 | Friday of the Second Week of Advent
Maranatha! Come, O Christ the Lord!
In these days' liturgy, we keep crying out, "Come, Lord Jesus!" But when he comes, do we appreciate or recognize him?
We can easily get distracted by the festive culture of the season that we forget they can interfere with our spiritual life.
Let us ask for the assistance of our Blessed Mother, that we may remain centered on Christ who is the source of our joy. She teaches us to "delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on his law day and night" - not on the pleasures of the world. With her help we will be able to remember always that "those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life."
