LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 28, 2022 | Monday of the First Week of Advent

"Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord." - Ps. 122

Advent is the time for renewal or repentance for the coming of Christ. The season invites us to reorient our whole life to God with all our heart, end sin, and turn away from evil with repugnance toward the sins we have committed.

Let us pray for humble and contrite hearts to identify sin in our lives and surrender ourselves to God's loving mercy.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 26, 2022 | Saturday Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age, says the Lord." - Mt. 28:20

Today is the last day of the current Liturgical Year, and the last day of Ordinary Time until after Christmas.

We conclude the year with Christ reminding us to be always ready because we do not know when he will return. As we prepare to begin a new liturgical year, perhaps this is a good time to reflect upon our own lives and so make preparations for our own end and entry to eternal life.

  • Morning Prayer - FRIDAY, 25 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 25, 2022 | Memorial of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr

"Blessed is the virgin who by denying herself and taking up her cross imitated the Lord, the spouse of virgins and prince of martyrs."

From time immemorial St. Catherine had been venerated at the monastery on Mount Sinai when, in the fifteenth century, the monks discovered her body. Legend has made of her a young Christian of Alexandria who rejected the advances of the Emperor Maximinus and routed a meeting of learned men gathered together to induce her to deny Christ. This feast was restored to the General Roman Calendar in 2002.

St Catherine’s courage is a great challenge to all African Christians in their struggle for justice and peace. The witness of her life and her readiness to die for the faith encourages us to be brave witnesses to the Lord and to speak out on behalf of all those who suffer.

St. Catherine of Alexandria, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - THURSDAY, 24 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 24, 2022 | Memorial of St. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs

"Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." - Mt 5:10

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Andrew Dung-Lac (1735-1839), priest and martyr, and companions, martyrs. St. Andrew was one of 117 people who were martyred in Vietnam between 1820 and 1862. The last of the martyrs were 17 laypersons, one of them a 9-year-old, executed in 1862.

The blood of the martyrs of Vietnam -- the missionary clergy, the local clergy and the ordinary Christian people -- have watered the seed of the Christian faith in that country.  Over the whole territory of Vietnam, about 130,000 Christians were killed in these persecutions. Over the centuries the names of most of them have been lost, but their memory is still alive in the Catholic community.

St. Andrew Dung-Lac and companions, pray for us and for the zeal to proclaim the Gospel with our lives whether in season or out of season.

  • Morning Prayer - WEDNESDAY, 23 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 23, 2022 | Wednesday in the Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

"By your perseverance you will secure your lives." - Luke 21:19

How do you deal with persecutions, harshness and insults especially by your family and those close to you?

We may be rattled and burdened by the heavy cross, but Jesus invites us not to give in to discouragement, anger or despair. He foresaw this and is preparing us for it. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is that which is most difficult, because it fosters the virtue of perseverance.

Let us pray for all our suffering brothers and sisters that they may be strengthened with the grace to persevere amidst the difficulties and trials of life.

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 22 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 22, 2022 | Memorial of St. Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr

"Pure be my heart and undefiled my flesh; for I have a spouse you know not of -- an angel of my Lord." - St. Cecilia

Devotion to St Cecilia, in whose honor a basilica was constructed in Rome in the fifth century, has spread far and wide because of the Passion of Saint Cecilia, which holds her up as a perfect example of a Christian woman, who embraced virginity and suffered martyrdom for the love of Christ.

As with early martyrs, nothing much is known about Cecilia except her existence and her name; with the additional complication that so many stories have grown up round her that any remaining historical facts are obscured. No-one knows quite why she should suddenly have become popular in the middle of the sixth century, some 200 years after her death, and her association with music is also a mystery. It may be real, or it may come from the description in the Passion of Cecilia singing to God “in her heart” while the musicians were playing on her wedding day, or it may come from a linguistic confusion: where the Passion describes her being stifled to death candentibus organis, “with the pipes glowing red-hot,” this could have been misread as cantantibus organis, “with the organ playing.”

    St. Cecilia, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 21 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 21, 2022 | Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"Christ is the son of Mary: come, let us adore him." - antiphon

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of the Presentation of Mary. The cycle of these three Marian feasts: the Birthday of Our Lady (September 8), the Holy Name of Mary (September 12) and her Presentation in the Temple (November 21), parallel with the first three feasts of our Lord in the liturgical cycle: the birth of Christ or Christmas (December 25), the Holy Name of Jesus (January 3), and His Presentation in the Temple (February 2).

In unity with Eastern Christianity, and commemorating the dedication in 543 of the New Basilica of Saint Mary, built next to the Temple at Jerusalem, this feast celebrates Mary’s “dedication” of herself to God from her infancy, inspired by the Holy Spirit, whose grace had filled her ever since her immaculate conception.

O Mary, most pure, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 20, 2022 | Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come" - Mk 11:9, 10

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, formerly referred to as "Christ the King," was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man's thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ's royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations.

  • Morning Prayer, SATURDAY 19 Nov 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 19, 2022 | Saturday Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On Saturdays in Ordinary Time when there is no obligatory memorial, an optional memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary is allowed.

"Today's memorial is a remembrance of the maternal example and discipleship of the Blessed Virgin Mary who, strengthened by faith and hope, on that 'great Saturday' on which Our Lord lay in the tomb, was the only one of the disciples to hold vigil in expectation of the Lord’s resurrection. It is a prelude and introduction to the celebration of Sunday, the weekly memorial of the Resurrection of Christ. It is a sign that the Virgin Mary is continuously present and operative in the life of the Church." - Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (2001), §188
