LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 18, 2022 | Optional Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles
"You will make them princes over all the earth; they will remember your name through all generations. Thus the peoples will praise you for ever, from age to age." - Entrance antiphon
The whole Church celebrates the dedication of the two great Roman basilicas of St. Peter at the Vatican and of St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls. The Basilica of St. Peter stands on the site of the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, where Nero's Circus stood. It was here that St. Peter was executed. Recent excavations have shown that the present basilica which, in the seventeenth century replaced the ancient Constantinian basilica, was built over the tomb of St. Peter, just as the previous basilica. It was consecrated by Urban VIII on November 18, 1626. St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls, situated at the other end of the city on the Ostian Way, is built near the place St. Paul was martyred. It was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1823 and was rebuilt in sumptuous fashion by Gregory XVI and Pius IX and consecrated by the latter on December 10, 1854. The celebration of the anniversary of these two dedications has been kept, nevertheless, on November 18.

"Bartimaeus shouted, 'Jesus, Son of David have pity on me!' The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, 'Son of David have pity on me!'" - Luke 18:38-39
What tempts you to feel discouraged and oppressed?
There are many things we will encounter in life that get us down, discourage us and tempt us to despair. There are many things that are oppressive to us and difficult for us to deal with.
When we feel oppressed, discouraged, frustrated, misunderstood, or the like, let us use this as an opportunity to turn to Jesus with even greater passion and courage calling upon His mercy. He sees us and He knows our needs.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 13, 2022 | Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." - Luke 21:28
How would you fare if you were called before the judgment seat of God today? If we were called, and we have no guarantee that we will not be called today, could we dare to face our judgment in our present state?
Today, we are reminded to put our spiritual accounts in order. This is an act of God's mercy. Our eternal future will depend on whether we listen to His call today, as tomorrow may be too late. Let us try to live always in God's friendship. The man who does this by living his Christian life daily need not fear death. It may be a sudden death, but it will never be an unprovided-for death. LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 12, 2022 | Memorial of St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr
"Whoever loses his life for my sake, will find it in eternity, says the Lord." - Mt 10:39
Josaphat Kuncewitcz was born in the Ukraine of Orthodox parents. In 1595 the Union of Brest brought the Ruthenian Church into communion with Catholic Rome while still preserving its own liturgy. The result was a schism within the church itself, with one party wanting to remain Orthodox and in the orbit of Moscow and Constantinople, while the other accepted the Union. Matters were complicated by the presence of the Greek Uniates, a remnant of a century-old attempt at church union (who remain a living church to this day).
Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Chosen bishop, he worked faithfully for the unity of the Church until he suffered martyrdom at the hands of an angry mob in Russia in 1623 at the age of forty-three. He is one of the patrons of Poland.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 11, 2022 | Memorial of St. Martin of Tours, Bishop
"I shall raise up for myself a faithful priest who will act in accord with my heart and my mind, says the Lord." - 1 Sm 2:35
Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Martin of Tours, bishop. He was born in the Roman province of Pannonia (approximating to the western half of modern Hungary) in about 316 and was educated at Pavia in Italy. He was baptized, left the army and after spending some time as a hermit on an island off the Ligurian coast, founded a monastery at Ligugé in western France, where he lived a monastic life guided by St Hilary. Later he was ordained priest and became bishop of Tours. In his actions he gave an example of what a good shepherd should be. He founded other monasteries, educated the clergy, and preached the Gospel to the poor. He died in 397.
The famous story about St Martin is that while a soldier in Amiens he gave half of his military cloak to a beggar and later had a dream in which the beggar revealed himself as Christ.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 10, 2022 | Memorial of St. Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor
"Peter said to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus replied: You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church." - Mt. 16:16,18
Born in Etruria and became Pope in 440, St. Leo the Great was a true shepherd and father of souls. During his pontificate, the Council of Chalcedon (451) defined that Christ is one divine person with two natures, divine and human. It was a confirmation of his Epistola Dogmatica (Tomus) to the Patriarch Flavian of Constantinople. He vigorously defended the unity of the Church. He repelled the invasions of the barbarians or alleviated their effects, famously persuading Attila the Hun not to march on Rome in 452, and preventing the invading Vandals from massacring the population in 455. St. Leo left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of Readings to this day. He died in 461.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 9, Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran
"I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord, that my name may be there forever." - 2Chr 7:16
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica as so many mistakenly believe. The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptized. It the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the archbasilica, the ecclesiastical mother church, called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput), as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter.
