Praying the Lauds - Your Daily Christian Morning Prayer

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 8, 2022 | Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women." - Luke 1:18

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the solemn dogma defined by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854.

Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin."

St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that God has chosen us in Christ to be his people and that Mary’s immaculate conception was part of God’s predestined plan for our salvation and glory. In order to achieve that salvation and glory we have to live the gospel values and say ‘yes’ to God every day, just as Mary did. Falling as it does in Advent, this solemnity also reminds us of our preparations for the birth of Christ at Christmas and of the necessity to remove sin from our own lives.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 7, 2022 | Memorial of St. Ambrose, Bishop an Doctor

"The Lord is the source of all wisdom: come, let us adore him." - Entrance antiphon

The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Ambrose (340-397), who was born at Treves in Gaul, a territory which embraced modern France, Britain, Spain, and part of Africa. He studied in Rome and later became governor of Liguria and Aemelia with residence at Milan. While supervising the election of a new bishop of Milan in 374, he himself was suddenly acclaimed the bishop. He was only a catechumen at the time and was ordained a priest and consecrated a bishop on December 7. He wrote much on the Scriptures and Fathers, preached a homily every Sunday, resisted the interference of the secular powers with the rights of the Church, opposed the heretics, and was instrumental in bringing about the conversion of St. Augustine. He composed many hymns, promoted sacred chant, and took a great interest in the Liturgy.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 6, 2022 | Tuesday of the Second Week of Advent

"In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost." - Mt. 18:12-14

It is love that drives somebody to seek forgiveness and it is the same love that compels someone to forgive another. Jesus loves a repentant sinner. Let us today embrace the virtue of repentance and forgiveness. Through this we will snowball peace, love and unity to the whole world just as is the wish of our heavenly father. LISTEN | Morning Prayer - December 3, 2022 | Memorial of St. Francis Xavier, Priest

"What I say to you in the darkness speak in the light, says the Lord, what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops." - Mt 10:27

Francis Xavier was born in the Basque country of Spain in 1506. He met Ignatius Loyola when he was a student in Paris, and he was ordained priest in 1537. In 1541 the Pope sent him as part of a mission to India, and he spent the rest of his life in the East, preaching the Gospel in Goa and Malacca. He made many converts and fought against the exploitation of the native population by the Europeans. He spent two years on a successful mission to Japan, laying the foundations of many Christian communities; and in 1552, after entering China secretly to preach the Gospel there, he died of fever and exhaustion on the Chinese island of Shangchwan.

St. Francis Xavier, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 30, 2022 | Feast of St. Andrew, Apostle

"Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men." - Mt. 4:19

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, a fisherman by trade, and a former disciple of John the Baptist. He was the one who introduced his brother Peter to Jesus, saying, "We have found the Messiah." Overshadowed henceforth by his brother, Andrew nevertheless appears again in the Gospels as introducing souls to Christ. After Pentecost, Andrew took up the apostolate on a much wider scale, and is said to have been martyred at Patras in southern Greece on a cross which was in the form of an "X". This type of cross has long been known as "St. Andrew's cross."

St. Andrew, apostle, pray for us!
