Two Keys to Living as God’s Slaves:
1. Abstain from Sinful Desires
- Foreigners: 1Pet 1:1
- The word exile or outsider refers to one who dwells beside the native citizen, who is allowed restricted rights, which are less than the naturalized citizens: Heb 11:9
- Sinful desires is more than sexual sin: 1 John 2:16
- Sinful desires wage war against your soul: Jam 4:1
2. Live Good Lives in Pagan Society
- Peter has already instructed his readers about their conduct before God: 1 Pet 1:15-16
- The church as misunderstood: Acts 28:22
- Our conduct will have eternal significance: Mt. 5:14-16
- It is all about evangelism for Peter: 1 Pet 3:15-16
Four Behaviors that Define Good Deeds:
1) Submit to Human Authority
For the Lord’s sake emphasizes the theological reason; God has established all
authority: Rom 13:1
This does not mean that we submit to evil: Acts 5:29
Government serves two purposes:
A. Punish: Rom 13:4
B. Reward: Rom 13:3
- We must enlighten the ignorant: Acts 17:30
- We are slaves of God: Rom 6:22
- You have to serve someone… 2 Pet 2:19
2) Respect Everyone v.17
Humanity is created in God’s image: Gen 1:26
3) Love God’s Family v.17 John 13:34-35
4) Reverence God: God is the starting point: Proverbs 1:7
And our foundation: 1 Pet 2:6
5) Respect the Emperor v.17
The Emperor is God’s appointment.
