HMP Addiewell opened in 2008 as Scotland’s second private prison – sold as a “learning jail” focused on education and rehabilitation.

But behind the promises came riots, staff walkouts, spiralling violence, drug epidemics and constant controversy.

In this episode we uncover the troubled story of Addiewell – a prison caught between profit, punishment and chaos.

HMP Kilmarnock made history in 1999 as Scotland’s first privately‑run prison.

Promised as a modern solution tae overcrowding, it quickly became a lightning rod for controversy – with riots, violence, drugs and staff shortages making headlines.

In this episode we explore how the “contractor’s jail” changed the face of Scottish imprisonment, and ask whether profit and punishment should ever mix.

Scotland’s women’s prisons have a history as complex as they are controversial.

From Cornton Vale – once branded “the vale of death” after decades of suicides, overcrowding and failings – tae HMP Stirling, the new jail built in 2023 to replace it, and the Lilias Centre in Glasgow, a unique community-based alternative for women offenders.

This episode uncovers the struggle between punishment and rehabilitation, scandal and reform, showing how Scotland has tried – and often failed – to get women’s imprisonment right.

Castle Huntly and Noranside were Scotland’s open prisons – designed for low‑risk inmates preparing for release.

From the historic castle setting of Huntly tae the converted mansion of Noranside, these jails offered a very different regime of trust, work placements and rehabilitation.

But life in the “open estate” was no fairytale – escapes, scandals and political debates have kept them in the spotlight.

This is the story of Scotland’s open prisons, where freedom was only ever a step away.

Go behind the walls of HMP Shotts – Scotland’s maximum-security prison built for the country’s most dangerous men.

From its opening in the 1970s tae modern day, we explore the tough regime, infamous inmates, daring escapes, riots and the reputation that makes Shotts one of the hardest jails in the country.

Brutal, bleak and full of stories that shaped Scottish prison history – this is the tale of Shotts.

From a wartime RAF base tae a modern prison, HMP Low Moss has one of the strangest histories in Scotland’s jail system.

Once used as a temporary camp and later reopened as a proper prison, it became known for escapes, overcrowding and controversy before being rebuilt in 2012.

Today it stands as a state‑of‑the‑art jail, but its past tells a story of improvisation, scandal and survival.
