Prep Comms

FTA Satellite is not what it once was, but it's still a viable alternative to paid TV especially if you're interested in news with different views. In this episode Caleb discusses the benefits of FTA Satellite and why a prepper may consider adding it to their communications plan.

Although FTA satellite systems have largely faded from mainstream use, a small community of enthusiasts remains committed to preserving this technology. They emphasize its unique ability to access international programming, which has kept a niche audience engaged, particularly among those interested in content from different languages and cultures. For a time, this interest sustained the FTA community, but the rapid growth of streaming services soon eclipsed these efforts, pushing FTA further into obscurity.

While FTA satellites are no longer widely used, some hobbyists still refurbish old dishes and exchange knowledge online. These dedicated individuals continue to discover unencrypted feeds and network programming through FTA systems, even though the widespread availability of internet-based content has greatly diminished the demand for such technology.

Is there a place in your comms plan for FTA Satellite? For me? Yes.

Editors Note:

Attention. This program was recorded less than 24 hours before President Joe Biden announced he was giving up his re-election bid. This significant development suggests further changes are on the horizon. You are encouraged to Prepare your communications accordingly.

The past ten days have been nothing short of tumultuous. Honestly, I foresee even more chaos before we see any real calm. With that said, thank you for tuning in to this episode. Today, I jump into current events (against my wishes), including the Trump Rally Shooting and the CrowdStrike outage. Then we also explore the use of aviation scanners and a faithful listener (Craig) reminded me of that end of the spectrum ('scuse the pun).

Additionally, I discuss how your $20 walkie-talkie isn't truly a scanner but might suffice in a pinch. The $35 pawn shop scanner is still a better choice!

Remember, ScannerMaster remains the premier destination for all your scanner needs, and I'm here to assist with any questions you might have (VM/DM, email).

Where would we be without our show sponsor, Hub City Mercantile? Your source for answers and clean water solutions. Use code AJM15 to enjoy a 15% discount on filter system purchases.

It's time to get your communications on line and ready to go! It's not hard or overwhelming but you have to be dedicated to make it work! (I wonder if my ol' buddy Chris will read that?)

In all sincerity, God Bless You and Yours and Thank You for allowing me your time!

Listening to scanner radios is fascinating and engaging. Whether you're new or experienced, the right police scanner can offer real-time info and fun. In this episode Caleb covers more of the need to know about scanner radios, from how they work to picking the best one- including the best place in the USA to buy one!

What Are Scanners?

A scanner is a radio receiver that quickly monitors ("scans") many channels. It lets you listen to two-way radio calls. Police, fire departments, and other services use these radios. They send short bursts of info on thousands of channels. Scanners help you follow these transmissions, giving a peek into local authorities and emergency services.

Types of Scanners Handheld Scanners

Handheld scanners are portable and let you monitor frequencies anywhere. They're great for listening from different places. Popular models often have rechargeable batteries, built-in antennas, and easy-to-use interfaces.

Base/Mobile Scanners

Base or mobile scanners are bigger and meant for fixed locations or vehicles. They usually offer more range and features than handheld models. These scanners are ideal for enthusiasts wanting a strong setup at home or in their car.

Digital Scanners

Digital scanners can decode digital signals, common in public safety communications. These are crucial if you want to listen to agencies using digital trunking.

Trunking Scanners

Trunking scanners follow conversations across multiple frequencies, key for modern, complex radio systems used by many public safety agencies. This tech ensures you don't miss any part of a conversation.

What to do if you just don't know what to do?
