The first five verses of Romans show reveal an example we would all do well to follow. Paul begins with a heartfelt appraisal, which led to a willingness to sacrifice, all followed by a reminder of the responsibility that comes with privilege.

In his commentary, the late Jack Cottrell states that "Romans 8 is the high point of the Bible, especially because of its emphasis on the Christian's assurance of victory over all opposing forces." The chapter begins with 'no condemnation" and ends with 'nothing can separate.' We CAN have victory over sin.

In baptism we have died with Christ, so we are no longer bound by the law. But what does that mean, especially since we are still struggling. In Romans 7 Paul tries to help us understand.

You have been given a gift, but you have to receive it! It came, according to Paul, "in the fullness of time" and was born of a woman. That's right, Jesus is the greatest gift ever given.

Disobedience involves sin and sin results in death. We are all sinners. So, where can we find hope and peace? Paul says that just as the sin of Adam resulted in death, the righteousness of Christ brings life. There are grounds for hope and peace as we think in terms of the Advent season.

As the third major emphasis regarding justification, Paul now shares the 'blessings' to which we can look forward. We are given six assurances... based on his opening line, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith…” (aorist tense). Look ahead to Romans 6 where Paul also says "...we who died to sin... who have been baptized" (also aorist tense). Of what are you assured?

Abraham 'believed,' the promises, David proclaimed the blessings, and the beauty of it all is that the promises and blessings are for me... and all who believe. But belief is not just something in your head. Abraham believed and went and offered, David believed and humbled himself and repented. So, what can we do to show our belief beyond just words?

For what are you thankful? As we approach Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful for 1) the miracle of justification, 2) the gift of grace, and 3) the sacrificial death on the cross of my Lord and Savior Jesus. Read Romans 3:21-31 and listen in to the message.

We have to accept the diagnosis before we can find any help. We have to acknowledge that "all have sinned and fall short." That verse includes you and me. We ARE sinners. We will be judged guilty, but then--as believers loyal to Jesus Christ--Jesus will step in and show how he has paid the penalty on our behalf.

What happens when someone shakes the foundation of your world? Paul hit a sensitive nerve when he said that ethnic race and religious practices are no way near as important as the works we do based on what is in our hearts. What questions would you most want to know you had the right answer?
