Doing Law Differently

Preparing the next generation of lawyers for the real world of law (ep 19)

Listen Later

A new topic for us today as we take a look at education and training in the legal industry, in particular, how we can improve it for our next generation of lawyers.

I’ve trained and mentored many law grads and junior lawyers so I have my own ideas about how we can change the education system so we can better prepare our colleagues for the future of the industry. Some of the skills that I see are really lacking are those practical skills – communication, project management and business type skills that are so essential.

Jessie Porteous is a Sydney based in-house lawyer and founder of start up The Learned Crew. TLC is a legal training business that aims to prepare the next generation of lawyers for the real world of law by bridging the gap between the legal theory taught at law school and the practical skills required by lawyers.

Here’s a summary of the things we talk about:

4:28 Identification of a training gap in in house roles
