In this episode, I compare two different approaches to extracurricular activities:

Strategy 1: Attempt to win a prestigious, well-established competition like the Google Science Fair.

Strategy 2: Create your own project that garners equal recognition and notoriety.

What are the pros and cons of each:

3. effort?
4. payoff?

With so many elements of today's college applications blending together, ECAs are one of the few places to differentiate yourself from the masses.

In this episode, I discuss how to make sure our children don’t flush a $300-400K education down the toilet.

For decades, we’ve been told (brainwashed):

1. You have to go to a traditional 4-yr college
2. You have to go to the highest-ranking college possible
3. You have to go to college, at any cost
4. You must be allowed to enjoy the “full college experience” at any cost

I explode these assumptions, and propose a radical means to make sure your child knows what they’re getting themselves into before it’s too late.

Summer is the perfect time to prepare for the rigors of the college admissions process.

What’s the best way to approach your child to make sure they are making the most of these critical three months?

Answer: A parent(s) must sit down with their child and create a summer plan

Easier said than done, right?

It can be intimidating to elbow your way into a leadership position in high school if you aren't particularly outgoing, extroverted, or aggressive.

In this episode, I dispel a myth that many parents (and athletes) fall prey to when it comes to college athletic recruiting:

"My club coach will help me get an athletic scholarship"

As well-intentioned as many coaches are, you cannot (and should not) expect your club coach (or high school coach) to drive the recruitment process for your child. 

That's not going to happen. 

Implementing a college recruiting plan is labor-intensive and highly-specific to your child.

In this episode, I argue that many more students should consider applying to colleges with low name recognition (e.g. Goucher College, Beloit College, Eckerd College).

Most students (and parents) pay scant attention to colleges they've never heard of before or that don't show up on popular college "rankings."

This is a mistake.

With rising college costs ($100K/yr) and plummeting admit rates (e.g. 2.5%), it's high time that families cast a wider net.
