  • RuPaul | The Diva Series
RuPaul has been recording and building his image since the mimid-80sIt wasn't until his debut album Supermodel of the World in 1993 that all his work paid off. The initial single Supermodel (You Better Work) was a global success, which led to their becoming a spokesperson for MAC cosmetics, his own talk show The RuPaul Show on VH1, a radio show with Michell Visage, cameos in a variety of movies, two books (Lettin' It All Hang Out and Workin' It! RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style), and a total of 14 studio albums. His influence in pop culture and within the drag scene cannot be underestimated.

"You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don't care! Just as long as you call me."

RuPaul also hosts and produces the widely popular RuPaul's Drag Race which has been running strong since 2009; first on Logo and now on VH1. The show has earned two Primetime Emmy Awards and was recently renewed for its 11th season.

Just in time for Pride 2019, it's my greatest pleasure to honor the Queen of Drag into the Diva Hall of Fame not only for his camp-style booty-shaking house-music floor stompers but for his tireless work for the LGBT+ community, equality, and empowerment. He or she; (who gives a f!@#) is adored by millions and will go down in history as a pioneering visionary in the fight for equal rights and visibility. We love you Ru. Keep doing what you're doing. ENJOY!

  • Wake Me Up — Dance Music Tribute to the Legendary Avicii
With the untimely passing of Avicii, I thought it would be appropriate to honor the man who provided the soundtrack for an entire generation.  His music didn't just lift us up, it inspired and gave us hope; most importantly, it made us dance. "Wake Me Up" is a dance music tribute to his legacy; one that will serve as inspiration for countless DJs in the generations to come.

I only hope I've done him justice. Peace.

  • Debbie Harry + Blondie | The Diva Series
Blondie is an American New Wave and Punk band formed in the late 70s by frontwoman Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. While their first two albums performed well in the UK and Australia, they were largely considered an underground band in the US. It wasn't until the release of "Parallel Lines" in 1978 and several single releases that varied in the US and UK that the group struck gold with the massively successful disco-infused "Heart Of Glass".

Shortly after, everyone's focus was on the lead singer Debbie Harry who soon became a fixture at Studio 54 and one of several muses for Andy Warhol. In performances, she could easily glide between sexy and sensual to outright punk and don't give a fuck. For a queer boy like me, she was the main fixture next to Chrissie Hynde hung up on my bedroom wall as I entered high school. She was one of my idols. In fact, "Eat To the Beat" is one of my all-time favorite albums that I'd play religiously until I wore it out and had to purchase a new copy.

This tribute to Debbie Harry and Blondie focuses on the group's career as well as Ms. Harry's solo work. I've taken the best of the remixes from various official collections released over the years and disregarded the worst. Then I pulled in more recent releases along with a few bootlegs to paint a complete picture of her and the band's work, as it pertains to the dancefloor.

Love her or hate her, Debbie Harry is the consummate DIVA who paved the way for many female artists. It is with complete love and devotion that Party Favorz recognizes those achievements and inducts the one and only Debbie Harry into the Diva Hall of Fame.

  • Destiny’s Child | The Diva Series
If you've been paying attention, you would have realized that Destiny's Child would be the next inductee into the Diva Hall of Fame. DC was originally an all-female quartet called Girl's Tyme, which was formed in 1990. With minor success, they eventually signed with Columbia and became known as Destiny's Child. Managed by Mathew Knowles (father to Beyoncé), much tension was generated within the group due to the emphasis on his daughter and another member Kelly Rowland making for a revolving door that eventually whittled down to a trio and the most successful lineup of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.

The group garnered a top 10 hit after a remix of their first single "No, No, No" by Wyclef Jean which put them on the map. The release of their second album "The Writings on the Wall" generated the number-one singles "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name" firmly solidifying their move from minor players to superstardom.

Since Beyoncé has already been inducted multiple times into the Diva Hall of Fame, it's only fitting to acknowledge that from where she first achieved success. Destiny's Child has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and is ranked as one of the most successful trios of all time. Billboard also has them ranked as the 90th most successful dance club artists of all time; all the more reason for their induction.

This tribute set focuses on heavier club anthems we all know and love while a second set will feature the housed-up versions of their popular hits. Without further ado, please give a rousing applause for the long overdue induction of Destiny's Child into the Diva Hall of Fame.

  • Jocelyn Brown | The Diva Series
From session work with some of the most iconic artists and labels (Cerrone, Bette Midler, Martha Wash, Salsoul Records, Artista, and Warner Brothers) in the 70s, 80s, and 90s to her solo work — Miss Jocelyn Brown has been a force within the music industry for over 50 years now. Many may recognize the sampling of her vocals (which even I just now found out about) in the massive early 90s hit by Snap! called "The Power." That sample was taken by her late 80's number one club hit "Love's Gonna Get You" which not unlike Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation" has been sampled a multitude of times. That song was also the basis for the early '90s #1 club hit "I'm Gonna Get You" by Bizzare inc. featuring Angie Brown.

From Disco and House Music to Soulful and NRG Miss Brown is well represented in this 2+ hour tribute set. I would love to do a more fitting tribute but I've been down with the flu for a week now and no signs of it abating. All I want to do is just sleep. Thankfully this set was finished last week along with the upcoming Winter Edition pt. 2 on Sunday when I wasn't feeling so bad.

For now, please give a standing ovation to the one and only Miss Jocelyn Brown!

  • Whitney 2018 Thank You Mix
In the final days of 2017, I thought I'd show some appreciation for the folks that have donated, contributed, and made comments by sending up a thank you mix by Whitney (no last name required) to take us into 2018. You folks are the only reason I'm sticking this out one more year.

Originally, I had put together a set of all-new mixes but after listening to it, I quickly became bored. Many of the remixes were bland and brought nothing new to the original remixes or actual song and seemed forced into a box that didn't quite fit, so I scrapped the whole thing. I ripped out half of the newer remixes I did like and went back to the table with the original mixes that made many of these songs genuinely special. The goal was to freshen up the original tribute to one of the greatest vocalists of all time while balancing the magic of the originals with fresh perspectives from today's musical landscape. Since there are only so many ways to skin that cat, this is what I came up with.

I'm not going to bore you with all the details of what I had to do to pull this off but I will say that it wasn't easy. It took almost two weeks to put together and by the time I finished (yesterday), I just didn't have it in me to sit and listen for an hour and 40 minutes with my headphones on. Because of the heavy song editing, I combed through it for errors so we're good there. I just don't know how great it all sounds (fingers crossed). If this isn't up your alley, stick with the original Whitney Tribute from 2009.

To be honest, I've been overly sensitive, touchy, and generally bitchy, which is normal this time of year (for me anyway). Not good for someone prone to panic attacks. I've found that reading less news, staying off Twitter (I already don't use my personal Facebook page,) and finding movies on Netflix or Amazon Video that aren't intense helps calm my nerves. I'll probably start reading books as I've already dropped my subscriptions to the WaPo and NYT and uninstalled HuffPo from my phone. If I need a heaping dose of crap news, there's plenty to be had in my Google feed. I've also found that the AP and Reuters apps are good sources for reliable non-biased news, though I still tend to stay away.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I apologize for my crap behavior as I try to work out my demons going into the new year.
I'll be sending out email invites based on email addresses from PayPal donations and then reaching out to others via Facebook messenger. The link will only last a week before it's deleted so please make sure you grab it now as it will likely be part of the subscription service coming in the New Year. Just give me several hours to get everything sent out to everyone.

For now, I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and a kick-ass 2018... ENJOY!

  • Top Dance Songs of 2017 Volume 3
We've reached the end of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2017. For those that aren't familiar with this series, each year Party Favorz compiles what I consider to be the most important dance music songs. Songs that are significant to the current pop and underground culture of dance music with the most influential DJs (pro, semi-pro, and bedroom) who have had a massive impact on the scene.

While the Top Dance Songs of the Year series began in 2007 when I started this blog, I've gone back a decade prior to compiling those songs as well. These 3-5 set compilations are fairly comprehensive and I always recommend you store the ones that reflect most prominently in your life. 10 - 20 years from now, you'll thank me, trust.

Because of the massive amount of content available on Party Favorz, I sometimes randomly pick something old from the current Top 20 just to give it a whirl. I'm a morning person so today I slapped on Time Capsule 2K14 | Volume 1 in my car and jammed to it while waiting for my morning news shows to come on. Even three years back brought great memories and as always, I'm blown away by how good these songs are. So heed my suggestion or ignore it; that's up to you.

In the interim, I've been re-working the ultimate year-end dance party mix Blow Your Own Horn to ensure perfection. I've got about three versions already and may combine elements from all of them in the final output. Expect that to drop earlier than normal so I can resume a semblance of normality in my life through the end of the year [grin].

I hope everyone has been enjoying this dance music trip through 2017. Judging by the numbers, it appears you have been. I'll be back in a week or so with the final blowout of the year. Until then...ENJOY!

  • Top Dance Songs of 2017 Volume 2
Despite what I may have declared about the state of dance music in my last post, 2017 was not without some fantastic gems. Many of the songs fall into the electronic dance music category but aren't dance, but rather sweet concoctions that have been remixed to give the originals an added boost and extend their playability. Excellent examples are Dua Lipa's "Be the One," Rihanna's "Love On the Brain," Flume and Tove Lo's masterful "Say It," and a personal favorite "Issues" by Julia Michaels to name a few. The original versions (and many others included in these three sets) of these songs stood strong by themselves but the remixes that accompanied them removed the tone of the original production and gave them an entirely new feeling. In these instances, it's the DJs featured in this series that are the equals of the artists themselves.

2017 had several noteworthy new artists and time will tell if they're one-trick ponies or are truly worthy of their current stature of new-found fame. Leading the pack and certainly the most promising is Dua Lipa who came out of seemingly nowhere after being plucked by Warner Brothers from semi-YouTube fame. She has the full package with the looks, the vocals, and the lyrics to back it all up. She's got "IT," and a string of hit singles to back IT up.

Another promising artist that I'll lay my cards down on is Julia Michaels. While not as massively successful as Miss Lipa, Julia put out one of my favorite songs this year with "Issues." She also has the full package (a quality severely lacking in many of her contemporaries) and could very well be a slow-burn to the top giving a certain Miss Goulding a run for the money if she doesn't drop some new material in 2018 [clears throat].

Both Niall Horan ("This Town," "Slow Hands") and Camila Cabello ("Crying in the Club," "Havana") proved there is life outside of their respective multi-platinum bands and should have pretty strong staying power. However, it's newcomer Cardi B. ("Bodak Yellow") and Luis Fonsi ("Despacito") whose first singles were so massive that living up to their success much less maintaining it will prove difficult to overcome. I'm not counting them out, but rather routing for their continued success but only time will tell.

Speaking of cheering on an artist; Party Favorz wants to give a shout-out to Kesha who with the release of her first album ("Rainbow") apart from Dr. Luke has proven several things: 1) She can sing 2) She can write 3) The "Woman" has a great deal of talent beyond spoiled-brat anthems. Just don't touch her fucking weed. Congratulations on your Grammy nominations for Best Pop Solo Album and Best Pop Solo Performance! "Woman" is sitting at number two on the Billboard Dance Club Chart as I write this and will likely finish the year atop that chart. The song has also been included as one of the year's best.

There is so much to cover in dance music for 2017 but I can't lay it all down lest you folks get bored. I'll have my final thoughts and part three of the Top Dance Songs of 2017 out on Friday. Until then...ENJOY!

  • Top Dance Songs of 2017 Volume 1
We've finally reached that time of year when Party Favorz reminisces over the best EDM hits of the year. The Year in Dance features the top dance hits of 2017 and as in past years, it's all compiled by your humble host. I generally put this series together not just based on chart-toppers but look at other criteria as to mainstay with a constant output of bootlegs (usually a good indicator as to how other DJs are feeling a particular song) and my own personal choices. I also include songs I don't particularly care for but were so big, it would be blasphemy to not include them. It's all subjective as many of you would likely include this, that, or another song while removing others.

What I will say is that despite all the varying styles and genres of house music, the entire EDM landscape is stale and has been for the past couple of years. First, it was the commercialization of Deep House where one hit after another chased after the other to capitalize on the popularity of the first. That started around 2015. Eventually, that evolved into Future House whereas Deep House has gone back into some unknown land of obscure laidback tracks it was once known for.

At the same time, everyone and their dog was trying to capitalize on the Big Room Anthem with the anticipated drop folks would salivate over as if they were at some religious revival. We're talking Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Alesso, David Guetta, etc. That still goes on but not near as much.

Now, everyone is chasing after that Reggaeton sound popularized by last year's massive summer hit "Lean On" by Major Lazer & DJ Snake. You hear it in song after song after song. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it's just generic tripe being pressed through a meat grinder. The beats have gotten slower and the extended plays are more like radio-friendly edits as the attention span of the current generation of house music lovers wanes.

One of my biggest gripes is the lack of talent and vocal abilities of the majority of artists themselves. Even when they are really strong singers, the vocals are so processed and chopped up and then strung together to get the best parts out of a performance, it often sounds like they're singing in the shower. Without even watching the YouTube video, I couldn't tell the difference between say, Halsey, Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, or another hugely popular artist who I won't mention (because I fear retribution) much less the countless lesser-known wannabes (and there are a lot of those). The thing is, the ladies I just mentioned can sing extraordinarily well but the music formula just doesn't allow their vocals to shine. There just isn't any warmth in the music currently being generated. It takes a unique vocalist for me to be able to say that's this person. Rhianna and Beyoncé come to mind because no matter how processed, they have unique vocal styles that allow us to discern who's singing.

I'm not here to piss all over the music industry because investment needs a guarantee of return. I get it but long gone are the days when labels would invest in an artist and allow them to grow. Everything demands a quick ROI or they throw the artist under the bus and move on to what they hope will be the next money-generating machine.

  • Madonna: 25 Years of SEX | The Diva Series
The upending of the moral majority has been consistent for decades as the self-righteous slunk from one faux outrage after another. No one was more effective in raising their ire than Madonna. As a pop princess in the 80s, she reached the pinnacle of pop stardom with a slickly produced vanilla fair that tantalized and tweaked our inner demons. By the end of the decade, she had perfected her dalliances and maximized her persona of controversy and sexuality inviting the kind of criticism that would only serve to make her star shine brighter.

In 1989, Madonna released Like a Prayer to equal amounts of praise and criticism. The lead single's video portrayed a black Jesus Christ as a sexual object. This affront to religion was considered apostasy by Christians. The follow-up single Express Yourself was a testament to female empowerment and respect. While the production values of the album relied on the smooth pop structure of her previous efforts, the Shep Pettibone remixes of these songs capitalized on the burgeoning underground House Music scene at the time, taking the songs to an entirely new level.

In 1990, Madonna took that sound mainstream with the release of Vogue off of "I'm Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy". That same year, she released the semi-greatest hits package The Immaculate Collection which sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has gone on to be one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. More controversy ensued as the sexually charged video for the lead single Justify My Love which contained imagery of sadomasochism, voyeurism, and bisexuality¹ was initially banned from MTV and then allowed to air only after midnight. Because of the limited airplay, the video was released as a VHS single (the first of its kind) and went on to sell over a million copies.

By 1992, all bets were off and Madonna had not only secured a new multimedia deal in conjunction with Time Warner worth $60 million but simultaneously released her first album on the new label Maverick Records entitled Erotica along with the coffee table book of sexual fantasies entitled SEX. The album itself received mixed reviews from critics but by most standards is now considered one of her greatest works. Erotica is a concept album about sex and romance, incorporating her alter ego named Mistress Dita, inspired by actress Dita Parlo. Some songs also take on a more confessional tone, influenced by the loss of Madonna's two close friends to AIDS.²

The book was critically panned even by fans who felt she had taken sexual matters too far. Its intention was not only to provoke but to allow people to openly discuss their sexual desires and fantasies; often things they were already doing under the covers. Through the years, however, critical reception towards Sex has become more positive, with academics deeming it a defining phase in Madonna's career. Sex is noted for its impact on society and culture as well as on Madonna herself, and is considered a bold, post-feminist work of art.³

1989 until the beginning of the millennium was not only the most productive and experimental work Madonna has ever produced but it was the same time th...
