  • Trash Disco The Ultimate Collection Vol. 3
Party Favorz is back with volume 3 of the Ultimate Collection of the greatest Trash Disco tracks of all time. I've been running a bit behind because I noticed after the first volume, some of the transitions were misaligned once exported to file. This tends to be the case when I'm dealing with mixes over 2 hours long and I've been performing a multitude of tasks on my computer involving mastering, whether it be automated or manually. I have a super fast computer with an i7 3.2 GHz processor and 32 GB of RAM, so it can handle the workload. However, I find that I frequently need to flush my temp files and reboot the computer to dump the memory to prevent these mistakes from happening. Nevertheless, they still do. I'll likely need to go back and comb through volume 2 to ensure its integrity.

This shouldn't be confused with some of the beats sounding like they're mismatched when in fact they're not. These are old songs from the days when they used live musicians to create disco songs; violins and all. Using today's technology to align the beats for a DJ-friendly transition, makes it easier for folks like me. However, since these songs were created by real persons, the timing is always off on the originals, which is where the automated beat correction comes into play. It usually creates a garage-type sound that was common in the 90s when it aligns the beats adding an extra 1/8 to the beat. I like to call these dirty beats.

There is one song by Carol Jiana "Hit 'N Run Lover" where the entire drums and percussion were so misaligned, you'd think the session players were novices. To fix that entire song, you'd literally need to isolate each sound and then recombine them, which would be time-consuming. I compared the original 12" with the Digital Visions edit and the same issue persists, even though the actual beats were aligned properly. It's a great song that's been reworked a multitude of times over the years, including a new vocal version by Carol herself. If it wasn't so important to the annals of Disco history, it would not have been included.

Now that I have totally bored you with information you likely don't care about, it's time to dive back into the Disco scene. Before we do, I want to thank David B., Ludovic D., Stephane D., David J., Ignacio G., and Paul B. for their donations. A couple of these are duplicates because they have donated more than once. Donations are ALWAYS appreciated. Now...ONTO THE MUSIC!

The original Barry Harris remix of "Got To Have Loving" by Don Ray has been replaced with the Digital Visions Re-Edit, which is truer to the original release.

  • Trash Disco The Ultimate Collection Vol. 2
I'm back with Trash Disco — The Ultimate Collection Volume 2, and this one is a whopper!

Since Disco isn't monolithic in its styles nor liberal use of varying BPMs, I broke these mixes up into three distinct categories. First, you have the 90 to 121 BPM tracks, which will be the second of this series that I have not started yet. Then there is the average tempo ranging from 121 to 128 BPM, which is what I've been posting. We have one more to go on Thursday. Then there are the break-neck speed tracks that go anywhere from 131 - 140 BPM, which I'll post last. That will be the most challenging to put together. Think, "Knock On Wood," "Born To Be Alive," "Get Off," etc.

That's not to say that these first three sets have been a cakewalk. Since I'm pulling from early 70s soul tracks by the likes of The O'Jays, M.F.S.B., Barry White, and Van McCoy & the Soul Symphony, into the mix, it can be a challenge making this all work. Then there are popular Funk tracks and many 80s tracks that have their own distinct style; especially a lot of the 80s songs, which is about the time that beat machines and synthesizers became affordable and were responsible for a lot of the 80s sound, which tended to be less warm and had a cold feel to them. Nevertheless, I do my best to make it all work.

Then there is the mastering. A lot of the DJs who create these fantastic edits (mix-friendly edits of the originals) are only as good as the masters they have to work with. A lot of the CD rips are still not great. Some need more bass to bring these songs up to today's standards, others lack fidelity and need more mids, while others overcompensate in both areas and need to be tempered. Pro Tools would solve a lot of these problems but unless you're at the level of Barry Harris and DJ Meme, those plugins are cost-prohibitive for most folks. So, I painstakingly went through each one to ensure quality and fidelity for today's modern playback devices. I hope I've succeeded.

In the next posts, I'll give shoutouts to the DJs that make this all work and maybe even discuss some history behind the history of the Disco machine.

For now, I want everyone to sit back, relax, loosen up, and as always...ENJOY!

  • Trash Disco The Ultimate Collection Vol. 1
Growing up as a kid, I never received any type of allowance. My parents were firmly upper-middle class but my father was generally pretty tight when it came to money. Like most kids, I had my chores like washing dishes and taking out the garbage. By 6th grade, my father decided I should start mowing the lawn as well. One day, one of our neighbors saw me mowing and asked if I would do his yard for $20. From there, I started getting requests from all over the neighborhood.

It wasn't until I was asked to do a backyard job that things took a turn for the better. When I woke early on a Saturday morning, I got to the house and the backyard was like a jungle with weeds and grass taller than I was. It never occurred to me to cut everything down first, so I fired up the lawn mower and started plowing away. This particular job took an entire day that went on well into the evening. During the course of the day, the wife had come out to give me lemonade several times. With temperatures that soared into the lower 100s, this was not a job for the faint of heart. It was at that point that I decided to negotiate the prices after assessing the amount of work that needed to be performed.

Eventually, I was able to purchase my own lawnmower, edger, and hedge clippers. The money I made allowed me to pay for my unquenchable thirst for music. When I didn't have a weekend job, I'd hop on my bike and ride 10 miles to the local record store to buy my 45s. I was lucky when my father took me to work in the local mall where he had a shoe store and I would spend all day perusing the record bins at Sound Center, a hybrid record and stereo equipment store. I was there so often that the employees knew me by name, which eventually landed me a job there during my freshman year of high school.

I like all kinds of music but nothing piqued my interest like Disco. I was a HUGE disco freak. While my first double album purchase was Barry Manilow's live album, it was my second purchase of Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" that put me in a tailspin. I would listen to it over and over again. I loved it so much that I bought the album and the (clears throat) 8-track so I could take it with me everywhere with my portable boombox.

I was also the kid that always got invited to parties if I wasn't having one myself. Kids always knew that I was the one with the music and I would bring my stack of 45s (hence party favors) to their gatherings. I was the goto kid who had all the latest hits if you wanted to have a successful party.

By the time I got into high school, my musical tastes changed based on all the new friends I was making. I was in the closet about my love for disco and began listening to Scorpions, Def Leppard, Billy Squier, etc. The posters I got from Sound Center of Donna Summer all came down from my room and up went Debbie Harry and Pretenders. I even had a punk phase I went through but my secret love for disco never abated.

It wasn't until the early 90s when Rhino Records released their 7-volume Disco Anthology set that I began to dive back in. Granted, they were all radio edits but it was a good starter. I started reading up on the era only to discover all the other artists and tracks that I was never aware of (even though I remembered seeing their promiscuous album covers in the store), like Loleatta Holloway, Sharon Redd, Bionic Boogie and a host of others. Pretty soon, I was going down the rabbit hole of disco and became an avid collector.

  • Catching Up with Purple Disco Machine
Party Favorz is back with my birthday gift to myself that I decided to share with the world. This latest Legacy induction is none other than the musically talented Purple Disco Machine.

German native Tino Piontek aka Purple Disco Machine got his start as far back as 2009 with his Deep Funk branded Disco House music project.

He appeared on my radar in 2013 with the release of the #1 Beatport Deep House track "My House." From there, it was a slow build of originals and collaborations featuring some of the funkiest House Music tunes. Shortly thereafter, PDM was an in-demand producer for the likes of Jamiroquai,  New Order, Claptone, Faithless, Seeb, Ekkah, L'Tric, Shapeshifters, Hercules & Love Affair (a personal favorite), and Sigma with Paloma Faith; many of which appear in this set.

PDM has had a stellar 2018. His rework of the 90s techno camp classic "Male Stripper" by Man 2 Man which includes one of Loleatta Holloway's classic adlibs has gone on to be a massive success this year. From underground to mainstream clubs, you've no doubt heard various iterations of his "Dished (Male Stripper)" on Spotify and dancefloors throughout the year. The song will end up in our Top Dance Songs of the Year series.

PDM does NOT have a signature style, which would allow the listener to be able to say "that's definitely..." which is a good thing. He's fully adept at adapting his brand of disco and funk to the songs he's given, allowing them to shine brighter on the dance floor. Whether it's NuDisco, Deep House, Classic House, or Indie Dance, PDM creates the grooves that make you wanna dance!

It's not unlike Party Favorz to recognize up-and-coming talent in our Legacy series for those DJs/producers that are on the track to superstardom. By no means is his tribute meant to indicate the end of his career, as he's only getting started. I expect bigger things from him in the coming years. Hey Madonna, if you're reading this, tap this man for your next album!

It is my greatest pleasure to honor Purple Disco Machine with this tribute to his building legacy. Cheers to a future of more foot-stomping, booty-shaking, crowd-pleasing magic! ENJOY!

  • Coldplay | Legacy | The Megamix
After the overwhelmingly positive response from the U2 dance music Legacy set last week, I decided to add a companion set featuring their contemporaries, Coldplay.

Coldplay is a mega rock band that was originally formed in 1996, which includes lead singer Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. They released a few EPs before their major breakthrough in 1999 with the single "Yellow."

Their first two full-length albums "Parachutes" and "A Rush of Blood To the Head" are two of the most important art-rock albums to come out in the millennium just before Radiohead's masterpiece "OK Computer." These albums are beloved by millions of fans worldwide for their introspective and thoughtful songs that just struck a nerve with people. I don't know how else to phrase their significance. These albums were just as important in my life as they were to countless fans.

Subsequent albums received mixed reviews and became more polished but still bolstered Coldplay's popularity with hook-filled anthems like "Viva La Vida," "Sky Full of Stars," and "Something Just Like This" with the Chainsmokers.

Initially, the dance remixes appeared to be an afterthought but with the breakthrough of "Clocks" from "Parachutes," and the subsequent Heaven and Earth remix, the burgeoning House Music and EDM scene became a natural fit for their stadium anthems.

Much like the U2 Legacy set, this tribute focuses on Coldplay's dance music output (official or otherwise) and reinterpretations of many of their most beloved songs. There's no doubt that Coldplay has a long career ahead of them, and much like U2 will maintain a long history and loyalty from their most ardent fans. They certainly deserve it.

With great respect, Party Favorz honors the dance musical legacy (so far) of Coldplay, one of the most important bands in the modern era.

  • U2 Dance Music Tribute
The 1980s produced some of the most iconic artists and groups of any generation. From Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince to R.E.M. The Police, and Bruce Springsteen there was something in these artists' styles, brands, and messages that triggered our emotions and fealty. U2 is one such group that has maintained the loyalty of millions of people worldwide through their sincerity, musicianship, and political activism. Let's face it; anyone that has seen them in concert or listened to their live recordings is easily swept up by the anthemic reinterpretations of their studio recordings. It's hard not to feel an affiliation with the group and their message after deep listening.

During the 90s, Bono, and band members the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen began to experiment with the burgeoning techno and trance scene in their music. Sometimes with great fanfare, while other times falling flat.

Regardless, these reinterpretations stand out on their own with Paul Oakenfold (and to a lesser extent William Orbit) introducing elements into their music that allowed U2 to reach a wider audience on the dancefloor.

To this day, U2 has continued its anthemic glory and fully embraced their music and message to be translated for the world's dancefloors with continued success. This legacy edition (or tribute) to their achievements in dance music is strictly focused on that area of this group's genius.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my tribute to one of rock's greatest and most influential bands as reinterpreted by other electronic artists, U2.

  • Dead or Alive | The Diva Series
Party Favorz is wrapping up our Back to the 80's edition with the final induction into the Diva Hall of Fame with the gender-bending and ultra-influential Dead or Alive.

Dead or Alive was an English pop band formed in 1980 in Liverpool; finding success in the mid-1980s, releasing seven singles that made the Top 40 UK and three albums on the Top 30 UK. They were the first band under the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman to have a number-one single. At the peak of their success, their lineup consisted of Pete Burns (vocals), Mike Percy (bass), Steve Coy (drums), and Tim Lever (keyboards); they have released seven studio albums and five compilation albums.

Two of the band's singles reached the U.S. Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" (No. 11 in 1985) and "Brand New Lover" (No. 15 in 1986).

"You Spin Me Round" peaked at number one for two weeks in 1985 in the UK, then charted again in 2003 and 2006 following Burns's appearance on the television reality show Celebrity Big Brother.[vague] It also became the first of two singles to top the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked them as the 96th most successful "dance artist" of all time 2017 Dead or Alive has sold over 30 million albums and 28 million singles worldwide.[5] The band was discontinued following Pete Burns' death in 2016. ³

As a GenX child of the 80s can honestly say that Dead or Alive was the shit! Beyond the two singles mentioned above, songs like "Lover Come Back To Me," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me a Doctor)," "Something In My House," and "Come Home With Me Baby" were floor-filling staples at the time of their release.

Fueled by the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), Dead or Alive generated some of the most beloved Hi-NRG dance tracks of the era.

Sadly, lead singer Pete Burns died of cardiac arrest in 2016 at the age of 57.

As part of the era of big hair excess, the influence Dead or Alive had in dance music, as well as gender fluidity cannot be understated. It is with great love and admiration that Party Favorz inducts Dead or Alive into the Diva Hall of Fame as we...

  • Aretha Franklin [1942 – 2018] | Legacy [Updated]

Aretha Franklin was originally inducted into the Diva Hall of Fame in 2016. Her entire history and back catalog isareot inconsequential and for music buffs (fanatics) like myself, I was completely mesmerized by her work once I began digging into her earlier catalog that was before my time.

By all accounts, my musical education goes way past what's presented here on this site. Yes, I love house music in all its forms but the truth is, I just love music. From Motown, Stax, and Soul to Disco, New Wave, Hard Rock, Punk, Country, and Pop, I absorb it all and have a vast appreciation for virtually everything.

Aretha Franklin is one of the biggest standouts in my musical brain. I listen to her when I need a pick-me-up even when I'm in a celebratory mood. Her music, her vocals, her style, and her ability to reinterpret other people's music is second to none. Her music and voice were the soundtrack for a generation of people that were living through the turbulent times of the 60s when equal rights and war took center stage as protests mounted throughout this nation. There is a reason she is the Queen of Soul.

Party Favorz is a site devoted to all things "dance" and the variety of genres that fall under that all-encompassing label. It would be difficult to pigeon-hole Aretha into any of these categories but ever since she began dabbling in the sophisticated disco of the early 80s which later exploded into the massive "Freeway of Love," "Who's Zoomin' Who," and "Another Night," there is no denying her ability to cross genres.

It wasn't until the early 90s when C + C Music (Clivillés and Cole) reworked her single for the "A Deeper Love" from the "Sister Act 2" soundtrack that she successfully transitioned into House Music. That song has been a major staple in DJ arsenals and has been reworked a multitude of times; mainly because of its deep resonance with the Gay community.

What's important to note is that many (but not all) of her earlier hits have inspired today's DJs to sample those works and present these classic songs to a whole new generation. Many of those are represented here along with her more contemporary releases and official remixes. What I've pulled together is the best of both worlds.

While her original induction into the Diva Hall of Fame is still up on this site, this new set expands on several of those songs with new releases and alternate versions than what first appeared on that induction. Once I heard the news of her illness, I began working on this set a week ago, and frankly think I've outdone myself because pulling all these different genres together is no easy task.

With that said, Party Favorz is honoring the one and only Aretha Franklin in a way that I only know how. She is widely considered to be one of the best and most influential singers in American history. With much love and R-E-S-P-E-C-T,  ladies and gentlemen, I give you the fabulous Aretha Franklin. ENJOY!

This set has been updated from the original post on 8-18-2018. The song "Freeway of Love" was re-eq'd due to overcompression.

  • P!nk 2018 | The Diva Series
As I promised yesterday, I've got another updated set featuring a past inductee into the Diva Hall of Fame, who compliments yesterday's re-induction of Kelly Clarkson. I am talking about none other than the fabulous Pink!

Their paths were similar in that they were both pigeonholed by their labels into the current R&B, hip-hop style of the moment with their first albums. While both were successful, their debut albums did not necessarily represent their style. It wasn't until the second album that they transitioned into a more pop-rock style that they exploded. Both are fantastic vocalists and both can render heart-wrenching songs that swell our broken hearts.

While Kelly always maintained a persona wrapped around the perky, sweet innocent girl with a rock edge, Pink was the more in-your-face, not politically correct bad girl of pop who didn't give a fuck what others thought about her.

Of course, much of this was a facade as well all know the bad girl from Pennsylvania had a kind of leather and lace persona who wore her heart on her sleeve. Pink went through some transitions on her first three albums before really solidifying her sound. It was all uphill from there.

Known for her amazing acrobatic performances in concert, a testament to her amazing stamina, she cannot only captivate us with her voice and music but with her artistic performances that continue to defy. No one (not even Madonna) comes close.

Pink is currently on tour but has been temporarily sidelined due to a gastric virus. We hope this is not serious and that she'll be back up and running in no time.

In the meantime, Pink 2018 builds on the original set released in 2013 with several updated versions of her earlier work and newer material. It is my greatest pleasure to once again reinduct Pink into the Diva Hall of Fame. ENJOY!

  • Kelly Clarkson 2018 | The Diva Series
Party Favorz is digging into our past inductees into the Diva Hall of Fame and updating those that have since released considerable new material with a refresh of the original inductions.

Kelly Clarkson is one of two divas getting a makeover. While her original induction from 2013 is still available, she remains just as viable today as she did when it was released.

Considered America's sweetheart, she is a refreshing breath of fresh air from all the noise that's cluttering up our social collective. She also remains a badass and shows her feisty spirit when called out with negativity.

When a troll on Twitter made a very random remark that she was fat, she flatly replied:

Yes, girl, YOU ARE! Kelly is beautiful no matter her size and her winning personality and awesome vocals will keep us in her corner for eternity. Kelly can be seen as a coach on NBC's The Voice though honestly, I don't have cable so I couldn't tell if it's still on or not. She also just finished a pilot for a daytime talk show and is currently shopping it around for various networks. Once again, it's her personality that will likely get it picked up and I wish nothing but continued success for her.

In the interim, we've polished up the old set and introduced a slew of hit singles and bootlegs to keep it fresh. With much love and admiration, Party Favorz recognizes the massive talent of this woman and her contributions to the dance floor. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
