  • Spice Girls | The Diva Series

Over the decades, there have been plenty of girl groups that wrangled the public's attention. The Supremes or Diana Ross & the Supremes as they were known in the waning years of the 60s were the reigning queens out of a multitude of girl groups. The 70s were a decade of obsolescence for the girls, while the 80s began the uptick with Bananarama, Expose, the Go-Gos, and the Bangles.

Once the 90s rolled around, girl groups were all the fashion with massively successful SWV, En Vogue, TLC, and Salt 'n' Pepa taking up the girl group rap mantle.

However, the most successful girl group of that decade was the Spice Girls. The original lineup consisted of Melanie Brown/Mel B."Scary Spice," Melanie Chisholm/Melanie C."Sporty Spice," Emma Bunton "Baby Spice," Geri Halliwell "Ginger Spice," and Victoria Beckham "Posh Spice." The marketing of individual personalities in the form of spice, with each reflecting a different type of woman, was pure marketing genius.

In 1996, the brand (yes, it was a brand) became a global phenomenon with their debut single Wannabe, which reached number one in 37 countries. The Spice Girls went on to sell 80 million records worldwide and had a global franchise worth $500-800 million between 1996-1998.

In May 1998, Geri Halliwell announced her departure from the group citing "differences" not necessarily artistic or personality differences, just "differences." By the end of 2000, the Spice Girls announced they would be going on indefinite status, effectively breaking up.

In 2008, all five Spice Girls reunited for a greatest hits album and tour.

Spice Girls are the most successful girl group of all time and have even recently announced a reunion that includes Mel B, Baby Spice, and Geri Halliwell. With two of the original ingredients missing, this reunion feels a little flat.

The Diva Series honors all five ladies' best work including Geri Halliwell and, Melanie C's solo singles; arguably the most successful members as solo artists.

Let's give it up for the ladies as Party Favorz lovingly inducts them into the Diva Hall of Fame.

If you downloaded this mix in the first 24 hours, it has been updated to the final edited version. The podcasts are the same, but 5 minutes have been edited out over various songs.

  • Patti LaBelle | The Diva Series
Miss Patti LaBelle was the moving force behind the 70s Soul group LaBelle and their signature song Lady Marmalade made them international superstars. Patti's powerful vocals made her a standout in the group (though they subsequently reformed in the 90s) as she eventually went solo with a sustained and successful career that has lasted decades.

From Gospel and Ballads (The Best Is Yet to Come, On My Own) and Disco (Music Is My Way of Life) to 80's pop (New Attitude, Stir It Up) and 90s R&B/House (Turn It Out, Shoe on the Other Foot, When You Talk about Love) the woman is a force to be reckoned with.

I'm sorry that I cannot spend more time providing accolades to Miss Patti, but I just literally escaped a two-day nightmare from Emory (world-renowned hospital) with my IV still embedded yesterday and just saw my PCP who has now gotten me a bed at a neighboring hospital which he is affiliated. Long story, but I'm not in the best of shape these days.

I just wanted to make sure I got this out since it's been complete for a couple of weeks now and let's face it, WHO DOESN'T LOVE PATTI? I'll slap you down if you say you don't because you haven't listened to this magnificent representation (albeit limited) of her contributions to house music.

Without further ado, Party Favorz is thrilled to induct Miss Patti LaBelle into the Diva Hall of Fame.

  • Madonna’s Birthday Celebration 2k16 | The Diva Series
After a month of teasing you folks, it's finally here! Madonna's birthday celebration for 2k16 is chock-full of bootleg fabulosity!

I haven't created a full-on circuit set for her majesty since 2010 and based on the songs I was coming across, it became pretty clear that's where this set was heading. Just based on this site's stats, I know we've got a ton of circuit lovers here and it's a given that Madonna reigns the Diva Hall of Fame. Just like peanut butter and chocolate, these are two great tastes that go together.

This set relies heavily on bootlegs from Rebel Heart and M.D.N.A. but also pulls from her vast catalog going back to the 80s with bootlegs that are so well done, they could have been official.

HenriqMoraes one-ups Matt Moss's take on Like a Virgin by delivering a bouncy tribal fun adaption of the original while VMC turns the best version EVER of What It Feels Like For a Girl (and some awesome remixes that accompanied that release).

Even though it's a dub, Luke DB, Umberto Balzanelli & Michelle give us the best version of Hung Up that frankly never existed with the official mixes. Sorry, but those were always lacking and Leanh delivers the hands-down winner of all the bootlegs with a remake of my least favorite song from American Life, Nobody Knows. His progressively tribal version is just so fun, it's a wonder nobody ever thought of this treatment.

VMC takes Bedtime Story and Victor Calderone's unreleased version on steroids ensuring a circuit lover's wet dream. Ralphi Rosario delivers an 11+ minute progressively tribal opus to Erotica, while Thiago Anthony gives Frozen a 21st-century circuit makeover.

I reached out to Barry Harris to see if he had anything new in the works but sadly he did not. When I told him his version of Deeper and Deeper + Vogue made the cut, he suggested Ghosttown. I tried to make it work, but his more house-up rendition (which I love) just sapped the energy out of the set so I went with DJ Paulo and Jackinsky instead. He's a super nice guy so I'm pretty certain he took it well.

Finally, I close the set out with a mashup by Noface between Madonna and Me and My Toothbrush's Gold Member. This pretty much sets the stage for a fun Chic-Esque disco rework of the original that's guaranteed to put a smile on your face if you haven't heard it yet.

Every year I try to outdo myself on these mixes and always fret as to what I'm going to come up with. While I've always been pleased with the final result, this year I can honestly say I am beyond stoked. From the artwork, and track selection (yes, I had a lot to go through) to the actual mixing, this is one solid set that should set the dance floor on FIRE for your local Madonna birthday celebration.

I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together for her loyal subjects. ENJOY!

  • Victor Calderone Tribute pt. 2
Moving along with the Tribute trilogy to the fabulous Victor Calderone, I'm serving up a heaping platter of hits and favorites along with a couple of bootlegs.

Personal favorites from this set include K.D. Lang's Summerfling, Shapeshifters Lola's Theme, Beyonce's Naughty Girl, Depeche Mode's Precious, Bette Midler's I'm Beautiful and the song that began Victor's meteoric rise to fame, Madonna's Frozen.

Speaking of Madonna, his remix of Bedtime Story from the album Bedtime Stories blends so well with her Ray of Light offerings, I'm blown away by how mind-numbing good this remix is. That song (co-written with Bjork) was a stepping stone for what was to come and while Victor's remix came way after the original release, it could easily sit nicely between Sky Fits Heaven and Skin.

The other bootleg included here is Britney Spears Everytime, which frankly never lent itself to being remix-ready as the official remixes never did anything for me. This remix (which was never released by Jive) feels a bit unpolished if unfinished. Nevertheless, it would have been a much-welcome addition to the official release because Victor was clearly on to something making it worthy of inclusion.

With the 4th of July weekend coming up and some other personal matters to attend to, I'll be dropping the third and final volume tomorrow for your holiday enjoyment.

    Until then ...ENJOY!

  • Victor Calderone Tribute pt. 1
I knew for some time now that I wanted to put together a Victor Calderone Tribute series that honored the man and the more commercial aspects of his career. I had siphoned off all of his mixes into a separate folder but just hadn't gotten around to doing anything with it. I finally sat down and in the spate of a day knocked these out.

Frankly, they just came together with a few titles left on the floor (Hollywood, Who Am I, Give It Up) but I do believe what I came up with rocks the rafters, and most fans will be quite pleased.

I'm not going to go down the road of detailing his history, how he started, or even how he became Madonna's go-to boy after kicking Junior to the curb. He's given a plethora of interviews, all of which pretty much well-document his rise to superstar DJ and the demands that were placed on him to churn out a remix. One of the best things I did take away from him was that he turned out some of his best work in a week. Do not overthink something because for starters, you don't have the time and when you start tinkering around thinking you can make something better, you just screw it up. I've lived and learned from that motto while working on the episodes for this site; sadly I just wish I had read that from him sooner rather than later.

These three sets are RAW and completed in one take. I went back and did some minor editing afterward to ensure better flow but for the most part, I just let these 9+ minute epic mixes have the floor.  Of course, I did the pre and post-mastering before and after so nothing comes at your ear drums unexpectedly.

Probably the most time I spent on this was Sarah Brightman's remake of Dust in the Wind. I have no clue where I picked that up but there it was in my folder. After listening to it, I remembered the skip towards the end, which appears to be the same version all over the internet. Well, folks, I fixed it, so you're welcome.

Much like his contemporaries (Hex Hector, Thunderpuss, Peter Rauhofer) songs are attributed to him that he never remixed so I thought I'd clear those misconceptions up once and for all. While he did remix Destiny's Child's horrendous remake of the Samantha Sang ballad Emotion, he DID NOT remix Emotions nor was it sung by Kristine W. That excellent song was produced by Tony Moran and sung by Elle Patrice. Granted, Tony was channeling his inner Calderone in that production but it still isn't Victor.

Speaking of Kristine W, Victor DID NOT remix O Holy Night either. I know that has been attributed to him by everyone and their mother but the quite excellent remix that everyone remembers is actually by Illicit who had a really good run on dance floor remixes around the time of Victor's peak.

These days, Victor is still doing his thing but moved to the dark side in his productions. His productions were generally pretty dark, to begin with but his interest these days is a bit more low-key original productions. He continues to tour so check out his schedule on Resident Advisor to see where he's playing next.

It's with great honor and respect that Party Favorz honors the great Victor Calderone and his contributions to house music.

  • Gloria Estefan | The Diva Series
I can't think of no better way to offset a nu-school Diva induction with an old-school induction that frankly, is long overdue.

Gloria Estefan is a multi-Grammy winner with several top ten hits including Conga (her-trademark song performed with Miami Sound Machine), Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, 1-2-3, Get On Your Feet, Anything For You, Here We Are, Coming Out of the Dark, Oye! and Party Time to name a few. She's won an MTV Video Music Award, a couple of ACE awards, an American Music Award, and multiple Billboard awards. She was inducted into the BMI  Songwriters Hall of Fame and is listed as one of VH1's top 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. With a resume like that, it's no wonder she has garnered a great deal of respect as a mover and shaker within the recording industry.

I'm not here to pile on more accolades, or maybe I am. What I will say is that her "salsa es muy caliente."

Without further ado, Party Favorz honors Gloria (yes, she's earned the one-name moniker) with an induction into the Diva Hall of Fame.

  • Top Dance Songs of 2015 pt. 5
We've finally made it to the 5th and final volume of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2015.  It's been crazy around here lately, so I haven't had much time to write up my thoughts about the year that was but suffice it to say it gets a mixed review in my book.

If 2014 was the transitional year as new forms of house music began to bubble up from the underground and took hold of popular music, then 2015 was the year artists and producers rested on their laurels and frankly settled for sameness as opposed to innovating their sound.

That's not to say there weren't any epic gems from the year and certainly the most original of them was released late last year (Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk"), which sounded like the Prince protegé's The Time riffing off of James Brown, which had the kind of staying power no one would have EVER predicted.  It does go to show that, artists don't have to rely on the house flavor of the moment to be relevant but should be willing to gamble on something they believe in.  When it works, the massive payoff cannot be underestimated.

This final set leans heavily on the best-of-the-house side of dance from the year, with bits and pieces of everything else.  If you feel some of your favorites might be missing from these five sets, never fear as they may very well make an appearance on the upcoming New Year's Dance Party mix Blow Your Own Horn.  I started this one-off year-end party mix a couple of years ago and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.  Last year's release is currently sitting at the top of the Party Favorz charts as I write this.

Song selection has already been pulled together for the mix and I'll be starting on it shortly with a possible release date sometime mid-week; certainly, before your New Year's festivities begin.

    Until then ...ENJOY!
