  • Top Dance Songs of 2013 Vol. 4
Finally kicking out the last installment of the Time Capsule 2K13 series.

After working on all four sets for the past several months, I can honestly say and predict that EDM as we may know it is on the precipice of plateauing.

That’s not to say that it won’t be as big as ever in 2014, because it will.  However, with the watering down and manufactured sounds spurred by the big labels that churn out one anthem after another, it’s hard to differentiate between one artist or producer over the other.  It’s like “hey that formula really worked for Swedish House Mafia last year, so let’s copy it 20 more times and we’re guaranteed a hit or two.

A good example of this is the young prodigy Zedd. Last year’s Spectrum and this year’s Clarity were both massive hits off of his major label debut on Interscope; so much so they released the “expanded” version of the album with the new single Stay the Night, which basically followed the same formula of its two predecessors.  It was a decent enough song but so obviously formulaic, I couldn't help but feel his label is boxing him in and stifling his creativity.  2014 will be a real opportunity for him to switch it up and present us with something new while clicking on the dance floor as well as radio (the latter being expected by his bosses).

Avicii clearly understands you have to stay fresh.  His single Wake Me Up, which was panned by many as to country, folksy or gimmicky, went on to become one of the biggest EDM tracks of the year. If he had major label backing, it’s likely that song may have never made it out of the gate.

Of course, this leads me to the disco insurgence of 2013 by comeback kings Daft Punk.  Thankfully, someone over at Sony had the good sense to put some serious backing and promotion behind their latest effort. Get Lucky was also one of the biggest dance tracks of 2013 and rightfully so. With its thick bassline recalling the late great Bernard Edwards and slick guitar licks by Nile Rogers both of Chic fame, the song would fit nicely smack dab in the middle of 1979.  While I don’t see any straight-up disco resurgence going forward, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it’s sibling NuDisco manages to crossover into the mainstream sometime in 2014.

With Tiesto taking up residence right next door to Britney in Las Vegas, you really begin to understand the copious amounts of money surrounding EDM now as it has moved from the underground to mainstream acceptance.  The fuse has been lit in 2013 and will continue to burn (thank you Ellie G.) through 2014 before finally imploding sometime in 2015.

Party Favorz has been at this a long time and has followed the trends from disco to NRG to house to trance and so forth.  Each trend in dance music is a byproduct of another, often with a twist and I expect no different in the future. I am not making any predictions as to what new sounds may be in store for us but my undying passion for all things dance will continue unabated and Party Favorz fully expects to take everyone down the road towards “the next big thing” as it happens.  So stick around and I’ll make sure we stay on the right path.

  • Top Dance Songs of 2013 Vol. 3
As the holidays are quickly approaching, I am sending up the third installment of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2013. Continuing the tradition of years past where I compile the year’s best dance hits, I am beginning to wonder if this multi-set series would be better condensed into maybe two volumes.

When I originally started the year-end sets, it was only two; the next several years it ballooned to 8 and then went back down to four. I just wrapped up something new for the site, which is a consolidated year-end set using alternate versions from past sets with several big hits from 2012 that bled into 2013, or better yet you couldn’t escape even after they peaked.

It’s hard to say how you folks will react since it’s not like anything I’ve ever done before. It’s a non-stop party mix that was done in one take and the closest you’ll ever get to a live set from me. I’ll get more into that when I put it out next week but suffice it to say it could very well represent the future of Party Favorz and how I treat mixes.  For now, let’s wrap up these Top Dance Songs of the Year sets so I can take a breather for the remainder of the year.

I’ll be back next week with the final installment and my thoughts on where EDM is heading in 2014 and beyond.

    Until then …ENJOY!

  • Top Dance Songs of 2013 Vol. 2
Pushing forward with the second set of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2013 I tried to mix it up a bit. Starting with the somber yet brilliant Afrojack take on Keane’s Sovereign Light Café it quickly switches to the more adolescent I Love It, Icona Pop’s summation of petulant youth.

Floor bangers and sweeping love anthems pretty much summarize the flow here with Rasmus Faber’s hands swaying in the air, smartphone’s light up the night glorious anthem We Go Oh (a Party Favorz 2013 personal favorite) closing out the set.

Gotta get ready for work, will try to post the third installment sometime tomorrow or the day after.

    Until then …ENJOY!

Folks, with two more to go it’s likely the fourth one will only show up on my new home @ https://www.house-mixes.com/profile/party-favorz, so if you only subscribe via Podomatic, now would be a good time to sign up for updates. Otherwise, you’re gonna miss out not just on the fourth volume of the Time Capsule but a condensed party version I just slapped together for your New Year’s celebration. Trust when I say you WON’T want to miss out on that one because it ain’t nothing like I’ve ever done before.

Welcome to the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2013, where I attempt to recap the year’s best EDM and squeeze it into four volumes.

Not always an easy task as certain songs may be overlooked or didn’t make the cut, while others may question the inclusion of others.

While it’s impossible for the Beatport and Billboard dance charts to not have some influence on my choices, at the end of the day I rely on my tastes, what I know folks are feeling, and fan comments on other sites to compile the list. It’s all subjective and could be easily argued up or down depending on one’s personal preferences.

While Gangnam Style made the cut last year, you better believe Ylvis’ The Fox did not for obvious reasons. While one was fun and catchy the other was just plain stupid and frankly annoying. It pained me to even include it on Jingle Electric a few weeks back.

It’s getting late and I’m cranky (i.e. pissed) after blowing $30 on a movie, popcorn, coke, and M&Ms that I didn’t even get to see (complicated). So, I’m just gonna let it go for now. I’ll be working a couple of hours tomorrow but should have the majority of the day off so I’m planning on uploading v2 of this set for your listening pleasure. Be sure to stay tuned.

  • Britney 2013 | The Diva Series
IT’S BRITNEY BITCH! The former Musketeer who burst onto the scene donning a pedophile’s wet dream schoolgirl outfit and now a mother of two is on top of the world these days.  No doubt it has been on a roller coaster ride ever since her meltdown three albums ago. These days, the diva is focused and has become a tour de force in the music industry.

With a new album on the way (produced by her S&S partner Will.I.Am) and a long-running stint in Las Vegas to follow, her star has never shown so bright.

This is the second induction into the Diva Hall of Fame for Miss B. and is well deserved. Britney has put out a massive catalog of hits that have kept us nodding our heads and shaking our asses for well over a decade now. Love her or hate her, there is no denying her worldwide success.

Originally when I first sat down to go over my Britney catalog of dance music, I was pretty certain I would take it into the EDM direction her music has evolved over the past several years. Once I got started, it was clear I had other thoughts about what would work. Ultimately, the final product is a circuit lover's dream. For the most part, the electrosugarpop tracks are ensconced by big tribal bangers that support the whole set like a tight belt holding up a pair of baggy jeans.

Party Favorz welcomes Miss B. back into the Diva Hall of Fame and looks forward to her future endeavors as she has set herself up to have the long-running career that Madonna and Kylie have maintained now for decades. Ladies and gentlemen, once again …Britney!

  • Christina Aguilera | The Diva Series
This week I’ll be posting three brand-spanking-new sets of the Diva Series before giving that edition a rest for a couple of months.
To kick things off, the one and only Christina Aguilera is being re-inducted to the Diva Hall of Fame and by all accounts, she fits the true definition LOL. The attitude, the voice, and the looks were all on full display during her three-year run as a coach on The Voice. You can credit that stent on the show for putting her back into the spotlight (something she desperately needed)

Since the release of Bionic and its subsequent pan by critics (whether justified or not … I think not) and a star turns in the mega-flop Burlesque (alongside three-time Diva Hall of Fame inductee Cher), her star power started to rapidly fade. Coupling that with some seriously added poundage, led folks to believe she just wasn't all that into it anymore, or worse experiencing serious depression.

Her follow-up album Lotus didn't fare much better and despite a loyal following, people began to scratch their heads and wonder what the hell was going on. Fortunately, high-profile collaborations with Maroon 5 and Pitbull have kept her on the charts not to mention a return to The Voice this fall should maintain that momentum.

Far be it for me to make any suggestions about her music career but I’m gonna anyway.  If she wants to be relevant, she will have to adapt to the current scene on the radio. I’d suggest working with William Orbit, Benny Benassi, or Calvin Harris (actually all of them) on her next project. She can still be Christina but these producers know their shit and could easily shape a new sound and image for Miss X. Take it for what it’s worth, but putting out another dated formulaic album will be the final nail in her coffin.
WOW! I didn’t mean for this induction to come off so harsh. So that being said, Party Favorz honors the woman, the voice, the TRUE DIVA, and all that she has contributed to our lives. Without further ado, please welcome Xtina a.k.a. Christina Aguilera! XOXOXO
