An interesting takeaway from 2012 is just how prevalent and frankly easy it has become for DJs to take it out of the bedroom and bring their work to the masses.  Seemingly, people are making a name for themselves overnight. Liam Keegan and now Cosmic Dawn come to mind (though there are plenty of others like Reidiculous and Funk3d).  If you’re looking into getting into the business check out How Hard Is DJing? Count To Four at Forbes. You might be surprised.

You will find that I used several Cosmic Dawn productions throughout this series more than any other. Much like Liam, he consistently delivers a meat and potatoes approach to his productions that cut out all the fancy blips and bleeps that others think is so cool, but really does nothing more than to distract the listener. I’d say the next step for this guy from the Netherlands is to start touring because that’s clearly where the money is. Hell, even an asshole like Deadmau5 is making millions by touring and has yet to deliver a worthy track or album that doesn’t copy everyone else. Which leads me to my next reflection…

Wanna know what the top DJs are making from touring? Check out Electronic Cash Kings: The World’s Highest Paid DJs. It’s no surprise to find Tiesto at the top of the heap raking in $22 million last year but some of the others may very well surprise you. Frankly, if a piece of human debris like Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5 can rake in 11.5 million then pretty much anyone can do it. Okay, not necessarily and if I’m being harsh on the guy, it’s only because of his appreciation or lack thereof his good fortune despite not really having any remarkable skills as a producer.  While you’re at it, you might want to check out Tiesto On World Aids Day, Retiring From DJ'ing And Learning To Trust His 'Gut'. After touring relentlessly for the past 20 years and producing some of the most iconic dancefloor grooves, Tiesto is finally hanging up his hat.

Without a doubt, the other big winner of 2012 is Beatport. Started in 2004 in Colorado, they have grown to be the single most influential EDM store for aspiring DJs and producers with a catalog of over 1,000,000 titles and over 8,000 independent labels and branches all over the United States, Berlin, and Japan.  Their global outreach has made them the most successful and relevant “online source for music” outside of iTunes. No doubt the big labels have taken notice and tried to muscle their way in, but Beatport marches to its own drums and doesn’t take orders from the major corporate entities. If Sony/BMG, Universal, EMI or Warner want to play, they play on Beatport’s terms. Realizing there is money to be had, the labels have taken a different approach to marketing certain talent like Zedd through independent channels and frankly, it’s starting to pay off. Thank you, Beatport for standing your ground and providing the world with a whole new way to discover artists that may have never been heard from.

As such, some of you may be scratching your heads over the inclusion of certain artists and songs in the Time Capsule series. It’s very simple; several of the songs included were massive Beatport songs and popular on alternative dance floors across the globe as well as on BPM radio here in the US. No doubt, you’ll be hearing more of these in my sets in the new year even though the artists don’t belong to any major label.

Finally, here is the third installment of Time Capsule 2012. I realize I’m a little behind schedule but I’ll do my best to get the final one out tomorrow before the stroke of midnight. Until then…ENJOY!

2. Usher - Scream (Cosmic Dawn & Andy Reese Mixshow)

Volume 2 of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2012 has many of my favorite songs of the year. P!nk, Eva Simmons, and Sander Van Doorn feat. Mayaeni had my favorite heartbreak songs. Love, anger, and doomed relationships seemed to be at the top of my radar this year LOL.

However, the brilliant Zedd, Avicii, and Porter Robinson equally enthralled us with their mastery and hook-laden songs. You couldn’t escape Levels and that amazing Etta James hook as it was being blasted just about everywhere you go (and I’m still not sick of it).

Of course, Rihanna kept dropping hits while Katy Perry’s sophomore album was like the gift that kept on giving. I particularly want to thank Calvin Harris for taking Florence + the Machine’s “Spectrum” and breathing life into it.

Perhaps the one artist this year who deserves much praise is Sia. Her writing skills combined with that amazing voice further prove that you can’t cover something up with glam and makeup and hope it sells; it’s all about talent and damn that girl’s got IT! From dance floors to radio Titanium was masterfully conceived from start to finish and belongs in the aforementioned category of favorites about love, anger, and doomed relationships. Dying to see where she takes it in 2013 (album please).

I’ll be back tomorrow and will talk about the DJs and Producers behind the EDM scene with some interesting facts that might surprise many of you.  Until then… ENJOY!

Welcome to the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2012. Formerly named the “Year-end Edition,” I thought it was more apropos to retitle these best of sets to what I’ve always referenced them to be. That is, something you’ll want to store away or bury in the backyard for safekeeping. Ten or Twenty years from now when you’re feeling nostalgic and want to complain to your kids that they don’t make music like they used to (an affliction that has arisen with every generation) you can pull these out and reminisce about the good, bad and the ugly that was 2012.

From the battle of the boy bands (The Wanted; One Direction) to the novelty songs that stuck to your brain like super glue (Let’s Have A Kiki; Gangnam Style) to the untimely death of two world-renowned divas, these pending sets have it all.  Speaking of divas, it’s been a good year for them and they are well-represented here. More on them in a future post.

In my 2007 year-end post, I discussed the changing landscape of EDM, which frankly more resembled much of the early 80's electronic sound rather than the house music that typically was the staple of the 90s. Music styles always go through an evolution which often reaches back to the past and updates the sound for a new generation of music lovers. I also predicted that EDM would bubble up from the underground and would ultimately go mainstream. 2012 fully realized that prediction. With hip-hop taking a backseat to the current musical landscape, many of those artists are adapting quickly to stay relevant.

I’d say there are another good five or so years before we start to witness a backlash in popular culture where EDM has driven back underground again until its next reincarnation. Until that time, expect even the most unlikely of artists to put out their twist on EDM.

There’s a lot to discuss about dance in 2012, but I’ll save those discussions for the upcoming posts. There are a total of four sets in this final series before we close this chapter, so fire up your computers and clear some space because I intend to get them all out before the start of the new year. Until the next time…ENJOY!

I’m finally getting around to posting the second volume of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2011 and here it is.  Packed with all sorts of goodies from 2011, there isn’t a bad egg in the bunch.

With the MLK holiday coming up on Monday, I’ve already got a 3-day weekend reprise from school (go figure).  So, I’ll start previewing new material for the first official set of 2012.

A couple of things or should I say divas to look forward to this year are Madonna and Cher.  Both are supposed to drop new albums this year. So the lip-smacking divalicious head-turning “oh no you di’nt” talk to the hand queens is already lining up for 2012.  Yay!

That’s it for me this 26-degree morning, brrr.  I’ll see ya when I see ya.  Until then…ENJOY!

Welcome to the annual Top Dance Songs of the Year 2011 or as I like to call them “musical time capsules” that represent the very best in dance music for the year that was. While the 2011 version is condensed compared to previous years, I stuck to the biggest dance floor monsters that had us shaking, quaking, dropping, and bopping all year long.  It promises not to disappoint.

From Katy Perry, Rihanna, Britney, and J-LO to Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Swedish House Mafia, and even Adele, all the big tunes are represented in these two sets.

So sit back and enjoy the year that was and then store these in a safe place; you’ll likely want to pull these out ten years from now and remember when.
