On the way to Longbourn, Mr. Gardiner attempts to dissuade Elizabeth’s fears by stating Wickham must be certain to marry - otherwise his own reputation and career would be at stake. Elizabeth does not agree - as Wickham’s previous actions don’t support this claim.
When they arrive at Longbourn, they find Mrs. Bennet in a state of panic. She tells her brother that when he finds Lydia, to make sure she marries Wickham (and to consult her on the wedding dress). Mr. Gardiner joins Mr. Bennett in London to search for the couple.
Jane and Elizabeth read a letter from Lydia to Mrs. Foster. In the letter, Lydia says how delighted she will be to sign her name Mrs. Lydia Wickham - showing that at least she thinks she’s getting married and did not run away with worse intentions.
Rumors begin to reach the family of Wickham’s debts due to gambling and his lavish lifestyle. The news reaches Mr. Collins who writes to the Bennet family, ensuring them that Lydia has ruined their reputation and any chance of their daughters marrying. He says Mrs. Collins and Lady Catherine agree with him.
Mr. Bennett returns home having failed to find Lydia. He asks for no one to speak of the matter with him, as he is feeling guilty for letting it happen in the first place. He swears he will be more cautious with Kitty.
