Sunstone Metals Ltd (ASX:STM) managing director Patrick Duffy joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss the maiden mineral resource estimate (MRE) for the El Palmar gold-copper porphyry project in northern Ecuador.

The initial estimate from the T1 deposit records 1.2 million ounces of gold equivalent (AuEq), establishing a solid foundation for future exploration. The resource is at surface level and suitable for open-pit mining.

T1 deposit contains 64 million tonnes of ore with a grade of 0.60 g/t AuEq, including 0.41 g/t gold, 0.13% copper and 0.7 g/t silver. The MRE was derived from 17,699 metres of drilling.

Sunstone Metals has also set an exploration target of 1.0 to 1.2 billion tonnes with the potential for 10 to 27 million ounces of gold and 1 to 3.7 million tonnes of copper.

Duffy emphasised the potential for El Palmar to join the ranks of Tier-1 deposits, with similarities to Solgold's Cascabel Alpala and Codelco's Llurimagua deposits in the same region.

Early-stage testing shows favourable recovery rates, with gold recovery at 90% and copper at 78%. Ongoing drilling and discussions with strategic partners aim to unlock further value from the project.

Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) managing director Peter Allen joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss successful trials using a pilot-scale calcining rotary kiln at the Hunan Firebird Battery Technologies Plant, Hunan Province, China.

The trials demonstrate significant energy savings, supporting Firebird's efforts in producing low-cost, high-purity manganese sulphate for lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) batteries.

The self-developed electrical rotary kiln showed a 70% reduction in energy consumption, using 80-100 kWh per tonne compared to more than 300 kWh for conventional kilns. This leads to cost reductions of approximately US$30 per tonne, or 5% of total production costs.

The testing was conducted in partnership with Sunward, a Chinese rotary tunnel kiln producer, who co-funded the energy-saving calcining unit.

The kiln, installed at the Jinshi High-Tech Industrial Park, is scalable and is expected to deliver further savings as production expands.

Firebird aims to improve its cost profile while progressing towards full-scale production with potential for the kiln to be used in other industries.

The company has begun designing higher temperature kilns for applications such as lithium spodumene processing and has initiated international patenting of its kiln technology.

It has completed an infill drilling program at its Kasiya Rutile-Graphite Project in Malawi. The program aimed to upgrade the mineral resource estimate (MRE) and convert probable ore reserves to the proven category.

Kasiya is the world’s largest rutile deposit and the second-largest flake graphite deposit, with more than 66% of the current MRE in the indicated category.

The drilling program included 281 aircore holes, 309 hand auger holes and 30 push tube and diamond core holes. An offset spacing of 200x200 metres was used for better geological analysis.

Samples will be assayed in laboratories in South Africa and Australia, with results expected in early 2025.

The southern Kasiya pits, which are expected to provide ore for the first eight years of production, were the focus of the drilling. It is expected that the MRE will be upgraded from indicated to measured and reserves will be converted from probable to proven under the JORC Code.

Rutile mineralisation is concentrated near the surface, while graphite grades improve at depths below 4 metres.

Iondrive Ltd (ASX:ION) CEO Dr Ebbe Dommisse sits down with Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss promising results from the latest tests on lithium-ion battery recycling.

The tests recovered 100% of nickel and 89-98% of other critical metals, including cobalt, manganese and lithium, using black mass from spent batteries.

These results were achieved through a three-stage pre-treatment process that removes impurities such as PVDF polymers, graphite and ferrous iron.

Iondrive expects even higher lithium recovery rates, potentially reaching 100%, with further refinement of solvent concentrations.

A pre-feasibility study (PFS) is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024, after which the company will move toward developing a pilot plant.

Dommisse described the results as a significant breakthrough, especially given that lower-quality raw materials were used.

North Bay Resources CEO Jared Lazerson joined Steve Darling from Proactive to shared and update that the company announcing that the U.S. Department of Labor's Mining Safety and Health Administration has granted all necessary approvals for full-scale production at the company’s Mt. Vernon Gold Mine in California. This milestone marks the beginning of operations at a largely undeveloped gold deposit.

Lazerson revealed that qualified mining engineers have conducted sampling at the site, with assays showing consistently high gold grades of more than 1 ounce per ton and up to 5 ounces per ton over 200 feet. The first phase of mining will focus on blasting, loading, sorting, and shipping 500 tons from the core of the deposit, which has demonstrated stable gold grades in the higher range.
