  • NanoViricides makes progress as it completes dosing in Phase 1a COVID study
Proactive Research Analyst John Savin discusses NanoViricides' significant progress in a new report.
The company has successfully completed dosing in a Phase 1a COVID study, marking a major milestone for any biotech firm. The key takeaway is the safety of the dosing, even at the highest levels, in healthy participants.
NanoViricides plans to advance to a Phase 1b study with actual COVID patients in India, where a surge in cases provides an opportune environment for clinical trials. This study focuses on a highly transmissible but not more dangerous COVID variant.
Savin highlights the company's broader ambitions to conduct trials for other viruses, demonstrating its versatile research capabilities. The financial aspect is also promising; NanoViricides reported having about $7 million in cash for the half-year, with an additional over $2 million loan from the CEO, ensuring adequate funding for ongoing programs.
The discussion also touched on the potential for US trials. The current studies are precursors to US trials, which are crucial for maximizing commercial potential. The FDA's interest in reviewing these studies was noted, although it remains uncertain whether a new Phase 1 will be required in the US or if it will directly proceed to Phase 2.

  • Golden Metal Resources in prime position for growing US demand for tungsten and copper
Golden Metal Resources PLC chief executive Oliver Friesen shares key insights about his company's strategic focus and future outlook in an interview with Proactive London.
Golden Metal Resources, listed on the AIM market in London under the ticker GMET, is primarily concentrated on exploration and development in Nevada, recognized as a top mining jurisdiction globally. Its flagship project, Pilot Mountain, is particularly notable for hosting the largest undeveloped tungsten deposit in the US, a significant point amid rising geopolitical tensions and the critical need for diverse metal supply chains.
Friesen emphasized tungsten's growing importance, highlighting its extensive use in the military and emerging applications in nuclear fusion technology. With China dominating about 86% of the global tungsten supply, Golden Metal Resources aims to diversify this reliance, leveraging its US-based assets. Additionally, the company is tapping into the burgeoning demand for copper, vital for green technologies and global electrification efforts. Its Garfield property shows promise as a significant copper Porphyry, complementing its tungsten focus.
Pilot Mountain is currently at the resource development stage, and the company is in discussions for non-dilutive government grant funding due to the project's strategic importance.
Friesen expressed optimism for 2024, citing a general underinvestment in the junior metals and mining sector and an increasing demand for metals like tungsten and copper. He believes Golden Metal Resources is well-positioned to capitalize on these trends, especially with supportive government policies and funding in the US.

  • Bitcoin bounces back after tough fortnight; ETFs still in focus - Crypto Roundup
Proactive's William "Billy" Farrington, gives key insights into the current cryptocurrency market, particularly Bitcoin.
Bitcoin experienced a sluggish week, dipping below $39,000 for the first time in a while, but saw a notable 3% rally against the US dollar, pushing it above $41,000. Farrington attributes this to positive US economic data and a consequent dip in the dollar index, fostering a favorable environment for Bitcoin.
A significant focus was the recent approval of Bitcoin-linked ETFs in the US. Despite high expectations, Bitcoin's value dipped post-approval, a phenomenon Farrington describes as a "sell the news" situation, where the hype was already factored into Bitcoin's price. However, ETFs have seen substantial activity, with total inflows reaching $824 million and trading volumes surpassing $21 billion.
Farrington also highlighted the outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), the largest of these ETFs. He explained that the high management fees of GBTC, at 1.5% yearly, are driving investors towards more cost-effective options. Despite Grayscale's claims of high liquidity and low spreads, the market currently favours lower-cost alternatives.
Looking ahead, Farrington suggests monitoring the balance of inflows and outflows in these ETFs, as this could significantly impact Bitcoin's price. He remains cautious, noting that the market is still in a "sell the news" phase, but acknowledges the potential for positive momentum in the future. This interview provides valuable insights for those interested in cryptocurrency trends and the effects of macroeconomic factors on Bitcoin's value.

  • BB Biotech's Dr Daniel Koller discusses the fund's investment strategy and performance
BB Biotech AG head portfolio manager Dr Daniel Koller outlines the company's investment strategy and performance in an interview with Proactive London.
BB Biotech, a Swiss investment firm with a 30-year track record, focuses on constructing a concentrated portfolio of 20-35 biotechnology stocks. The company aims for double-digit returns, targeting a 15% return on invested capital over a cycle.
Koller detailed the firm's "S curve" investment strategy, which involves identifying companies at the proof of concept stage, primarily in the small to mid-cap range, and investing in them for the medium to long term. This approach allows BB Biotech to support companies through their growth phases, from clinical to commercial stages, and divest when growth slows or targets are no longer achievable.
The fund focuses on therapeutic areas like cancer, autoimmune diseases, and rare genetic disorders. It also pays close attention to evolving technologies in drug development, including RNA medicines, gene therapies, and cell-based treatments.
Koller also highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence in their operations, employing data scientists to enhance due diligence and identify optimal investment opportunities in a field that has grown from a few hundred to thousands of companies.
Despite recent market challenges, Koller remains optimistic about the fund's performance. He acknowledges a downturn in the biotech sector over the last two years but points to the substantial progress made by portfolio companies. He cites factors such as changing interest rate environments, increased mergers and acquisitions, and clinical advancements as drivers for a positive turnaround in the fourth quarter and early 2024.

  • Learning Technologies says it is well-positioned for the year ahead as it meets 2023 forecasts
Learning Technologies Group (LTG) chief executive Jonathan Satchell discusses the company's resilient performance in the challenging macroeconomic conditions of 2023 in an interview with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion.
In a trading update, the company said it expects to deliver group revenues for continuing operations of not less than £560 million, in line with consensus expectations. Adjusted EBIT for continuing operations are expected to be not less than £98 million.
Satchell emphasized LTG's strong cash generation in the latter half of 2023, with a net debt significantly better than expected, aided partly by favourable FX rates. This robust financial performance has been attributed to improved margins, especially in the GP Strategies sector after overcoming initial integration challenges.
Looking forward, Satchell expressed optimism about LTG's financial health and leverage position, enhanced by the recent sale of non-core business Lorien Engineering Solutions. This positions the company to consider various strategic options, including further debt repayment, share buybacks, or acquisitions. He noted that market valuations are becoming more attractive for potential acquisitions.

  • Pensana moves forward with Angolan rare earth project with release of independent technical review
Pensana PLC chairman Paul Atherley joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with more details about the company, which is advancing one of the world's largest undeveloped rare earth mines – the Longonjo neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) mining project in western Angola.
At full production, Longonjo is expected to produce roughly 5% of the world production of NdPr in the form of an exported mixed rare earth carbonate.
The development is critical for producing magnet metals used in electric vehicle motors and offshore wind turbines, diversifying the supply chain currently dominated by China.
The upfront capital cost of US$200 million for the fully permitted mine and processing facilities is amongst the lowest amongst its peers making Pensana highly competitive.
Following the release of a technical due diligence report on the Longonjo project for its financiers Atherley said Pensana is in the final stage where it can proceed with the building of the project.

  • First Phosphate announces field work has confirmed two new discoveries at Begin-Lamarche Project
First Phosphate Corp CEO John Passalacqua and Chief Geologist Gilles Laverdiere joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share significant news about the company's high-grade phosphate discoveries at the Bégin-Lamarche project in Quebec.
The company confirmed a new high-grade discovery located just 500 meters from the existing northern zone of the project. The discovery was initially made in the fall of 2022 during a prospection campaign and was later confirmed with 26 grab samples returning high-grade P2O5 (phosphate).
Laverdiere explained that the newly discovered high-grade phosphate area has been named the Mountain Zone and measures approximately 350 meters in length by 175 meters in width. Field observations suggest that the rock type in this area is nelsonitic peridotite, which is the most favorable rock type for finding phosphate on the property. Of the 26 grab samples taken in this area, most returned grades ranging from 7.17% to 17.83% phosphate.
Additionally, a second new zone called the Northwestern Zone was discovered west of the existing Northern Zone, with 4 of 8 samples returning grades of over 10% P2O5.
The discovery of these high-grade phosphate zones is a significant development for First Phosphate Corp and its Bégin-Lamarche project, potentially contributing to the project's overall resource base and economic potential.

  • PYX Resources reports record 2023 on strong rise in zircon production and sales
Pyx Resources Ltd chairman and CEO Oliver Hasler joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with details of the company's record performance for 2023.
Despite global financial challenges, Pyx Resources, a leader in zircon production, saw a significant growth in production and sales. Zircon production increased by 31% in 2023 compared to 2022, with overall sales up by 24%. The company focused on zircon, the most valuable mineral in its portfolio, reducing production of other minerals. This strategic shift led to a total sales increase of 20%.
Despite a soft general market, zircon prices remained strong. Prices increased from $1,300-$1,400 per tonne at IPO to $2,100 per tonne by the end of 2023, mainly driven by demand from China and Pyx's high-quality, innovative products suited for applications like electric vehicle batteries and energy cells.
Hasler also highlighted Pyx's commitment to sustainability and workplace diversity. It aligned with the UN sustainability goals, increased female employment, and focused on hiring from the local indigenous population. The company also engaged in community projects, including tree planting, blood donation drives, and cultural initiatives.
Looking forward to 2024, Pyx Resources has a robust five-year plan aimed at increasing zircon production to 48,000 tonnes.
Hasler sees potential for Pyx Resources to become a regional consolidator in the mineral sands business, presenting a unique investment opportunity.
