Reverend Shelley McVea explores the life of Moses, who lived in the presence of God, but who also had a tough time of it. He was born into an enslaved family, then found by the Pharaoh’s daughter who raised him as an Egyptian. When God spoke to him from within the flames of a burning bush, this unlikely leader was asked to lead his people out of slavery, out of Egypt. And he did liberate his people, and he guided them right into, not paradise, but into the wilderness.

Reverend Shelley McVea looks at Paul’s letter to the Philippians (4:1-9)in which he gives advice to his friends.

Reverend Shelley calls these his “Five Verbs to Live By”. And those verbs are: to stand firm, to rejoice, to not worry, to pray, and to think. “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable,” Pauls says, think about these things.

Reverend Shelley McVea continues to preach on the words of Paul. Paul felt that his accomplishments, though many, were not as important to him as living a life of faith, a life where we could have the hope of getting to know, deeply, Christ. That connection brings us the hope of greater glory, even if it means suffering, because we can have the hope of fellowship with Jesus through the act of our own suffering.

Preaching in person for the first time since the start of the pandemic lock down, Reverend Shelley McVea preaches on several passages that feature complaining: Those wandering in the wilderness after escaping Egypt complain about the deprivation they encounter; workers complain that those who started work later in the day than they did, get paid the same; and Paul, from the confines of prison, facing execution, does he complain? No, he does not. He is filled with a joy that makes him content in his faith.
