Proclamation! For Good Friday, 2 April 2021

Postulant Jillian Ruch provides us with a sermon today that reflects on three characteristics of God - Selflessness, Obedience and Pure Love. These are found in the Gospel reading for Good Friday: John 18:1-19:42. Today we are present to the grief of Jesus' crucifixion and witness, in the telling of this event, God's selflessness. We see how Jesus modelled true obedience to God's plan, even with his own sacrifice and how God's pure love is shown to us through Jesus' death on the cross. Please listen, but I ask that you try to put yourself in the grief of Good Friday and not skip to the Joy of Easter Sunday.

Proclamation! For the fifth Sunday in Lent, Sunday 21 March 2021

Have you ever spotted a celebrity? A sports star or a famous actor? In this morning’s gospel some Greeks wish to see Jesus, who has become a celebrity in Jerusalem. But instead of agreeing to see them, Jesus points to the Cross. It is by dying to ourselves that we will find eternal life. We are now entering the deepest part of Lent, pointing ourselves toward Holy Week. And Jesus offers us a profound paradox: the way to true life is by dying to our old ways and living to the new way of God’s upside-down kingdom.

Guest preacher Reverend Canon David Harrison considers the message found in John 12:20-33 when “the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."

“Get behind me Satan,” Jesus said to Peter. Jesus recognized that Satan was trying to get in the way of His mission to save His people. In this sermon, postulant Jillian Ruch will walk through what it might have been like to be there when this was said, how we sometimes let other things in our lives get in the way today of Jesus' mission and then some of the things we can to strengthen ourselves against this.
