Proclamation! For the Third Sunday of Easter: Sunday, 23 April 2023  

Reverend Shelley McVea explores the happenings on the road to Emmaus.  A man joins two others walking on the road, and he asks what they are talking about.  They are surprised to encounter someone who hasn’t heard about the events in Jerusalem.  They tell this stranger how they believed that Jesus was their messiah, but now,. he’s been crucified.  The two don’t recognize Jesus even as he walks along with them. This is an emblem of the resurrected Jesus, who is present to us but not yet revealed, who walks with us but who is not seen for who he really is.

Proclamation! For the Fifth Sunday of Lent: Sunday, 26 March 2023  

The Rev. Dr. Arthur Boers reminds us that it is Easter soon by not yet:  we are still in Lent and have to go “through a graveyard” to get to the resurrection. Like today’s Old Testament story, we are like dry rattling bones that hear the word of the Lord and all filled with new breath, or like today’s New Testament story, we are like Lazarus, raised from the dead by Jesus.

Proclamation! For the Fourth Sunday of Lent: Sunday, 19 March 2023  

“I am The Man” 

Reverend Shelley McVea shares another miracle in lent.   Jesus encounters a blind man and heals him in an unusual way:  he mixes his spit with earth, mingling his godliness with the essence of the earth.  He tells the man to wash his eyes and when he does, his sight is restored.  The man’s friends are bewildered: Is it really you? They ask.

Proclamation! For the Third Sunday of Lent: Sunday, 12 March 2023  
The Living Water 
Reverend Shelley McVea weaves an old testament and a new testament story together, to help us understand the role of water in a desert land.  After fleeing Egypt the people of Israel wandered the desert and faced the prospect of having no water.  They complained to Moses and to God.  In the new testament, Jesus goes to Jacob’s well hoping for water but the well is deep and he has no bucket.  Jesus meets a woman there and asks her for water.  In return he offers her living water,  which springs up for eternal life.

Proclamation! For the First Sunday of Lent: Sunday, 26 February 2023  

Reverend Shelley McVea starts her sermon on the first Sunday of Lent with her one and only Lent joke.  Then Shelley gets deeper into the experience of Lent by comparing lent to a journey, a journey that requires us to leave much behind.  We begin with ashes, mindful of the things that weigh us down, requiring us to take only what we need.  In the gospel today, we remember the story of Jesus in the wilderness, where he prepared himself by experiencing solitude and deprivation.

Proclamation! For the Last Sunday After Epiphany: Sunday, 19 February 2023  

Today our Warden, Gillian Eley, preaches the sermon on this Transfiguration Sunday, the day when Jesus went up the mountain and entered a state of radiance as he spoke to Moses and Elijah.  Peter and some disciples witnessed this and when they heard the voice of the Lord, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.  Gillian explores the significance of this moment in our lives: how we can be less afraid as we witness the light of God shining.

Proclamation! For the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany: Sunday, 12 February 2023  

Reverend Shelley McVea continues more deeply into Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.  Jesus preaches about at way of living that gives us a spiritual freedom, but it is a high standard that Jesus sets for us, and needs us to address our attraction to sin, and to really understand the commandments by clarifying our understanding of ourselves:   “Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’.”

Today a special guest, James Beck, Lay Pastoral Associate, Little Trinity Church, brings us a sermon on the ways that sin alienates us from God and from each other.  Alienation leads to isolation, isolation to despair, and despair to darkness. The presence of Christ can pierce the darkest darkness, through the act of repentance.  When we repent of our sin, the effects of sin unwind, enabling us to regain the longed for intimacy with God and with each other.
