Open Hands โ€” A Meditation on Letting Go of Control

Most of us walk around gripping something all day โ€” a schedule, an outcome, a person who hasn't texted back. It feels like responsibility. It's actually fear wearing a control costume. In this guided meditation, Don leads you through releasing the grip and choosing trust instead โ€” the stronger move, not the weaker one. Plus a word from today's sponsor, Fem Choice (femchoice.app). Read the full deep dive on Substack, grounded in a 2025 resilience study, DBT's radical acceptance, and the Stoic dichotomy of control.

    The Debt Is the Leash

$38.9 trillion. That's the U.S. national debt right now, growing by roughly $7 billion a day โ€” and Don and Daysha want you to sit with a hard truth before you get mad at whoever's in the Oval Office: the President didn't create that number and can't erase it. He's a tenant. The people actually holding that debt don't run for office, and nobody votes them out.

So this episode follows the leash all the way up. What are the people at the very top actually building while the country argues about a press conference? Massive AI data centers, all over the country โ€” and a real, documented political fight over the power and water they consume. A proposed global, programmable digital dollar, with the stated goal of beating China but the built-in capability to track and freeze money the second somebody decides to use it that way. And a precedent that isn't hypothetical at all: car manufacturers already have, and already used, the ability to remotely disable a vehicle's features while someone was driving it.

Coherent, controversial, and built to start an argument at your dinner table โ€” plus two Prodigal Breaking News updates from Latisha Sky: a federal judge blocking the White House's ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, and the administration cutting roughly 760,000 people off their Obamacare coverage.

At the Congressional Black Caucus's Annual Legislative Conference, civil rights attorney Lee Merritt and Reverend Dr. Jamal Bryant had to build a panel called "Stop The Lynchings" themselves โ€” because it wasn't already on the agenda. Forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell told the room "forensic medicine is medicine like any other." He had to say it out loud because it isn't being treated that way โ€” investigators defaulting to "suicide" and "accident," cases closing before the real work gets done. It's the same machine Don and Daysha just spent a whole episode naming in the Nolan Wells case.

This episode zooms out. In one week: DOJ backing Trump's ban on CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from the White House, arguing press access is "a privilege, not a right." Two more major hospitals ending gender-affirming care for trans youth under DOJ pressure. A federal judge ordering the return of a man deported to a country he has no connection to. Don and Daysha connect the dots โ€” loud, angry, unfiltered โ€” and name what's underneath all of it: Project 2025, published years ago in plain English, not a future threat but a playbook already running. "Death by a thousand quiet Tuesdays," not one dramatic moment.

Featuring Latisha Sky with a Prodigal Breaking News update on the Nolan Wells case and the CBC panel itself.

No True Bill: The Nolan Wells Case and Mississippi's Oldest Verdict

Eighteen years old. Went out on the water with his friends for the Fourth of July. Was the only one who didn't come home. On September 21st, a Jackson County, Mississippi grand jury returned a no true bill in the death of Nolan Wells โ€” no charges, against anybody, for anything. The District Attorney went on camera and told the public Nolan's friends "loved him." Nobody asked her that.

Don and Daysha take the DA's own numbers apart: 132 subpoenas, 43 witnesses interviewed โ€” only 7 who ever sat in front of the grand jury. An independent, family-funded autopsy found blunt-force injuries to the back of Nolan's head that the state medical examiner never even photographed. Official cause of death: undetermined. They trace the line straight back through Mississippi's own history โ€” Emmett Till in 1955, sixty-seven minutes to acquit; Medgar Evers in 1963, thirty-one years before a conviction โ€” and name the pattern for exactly what it is, without putting a target on the private citizens who were on that water.

This episode closes differently than most. After the facts and the fire, Don leads a prayer for the Wells family, Daysha carries it into a meditation speaking peace and joy to a community that already feels this in its gut, and they close together on a Prodigal note: the truth is not on Mississippi's clock โ€” but it comes.

Own Your Power: Texas's Grid Is Buckling Under Data Centers โ€” Here's What Actually Works Right Now

In January, the line of companies waiting to connect to the Texas power grid totaled 233 gigawatts. By August, it was 474 gigawatts โ€” over 90 percent of it data centers, more than five times the entire state's peak demand. The governor just halted new hookups and ordered mandatory audits. Don and Daysha lay out the scale of it โ€” ERCOT's own CEO warning of more blackout risk ahead, the same national pattern this show already documented with NERC and PJM โ€” and who's actually paying for it: utility CEO pay up 47 percent since 2018, profit margins climbing while your bill does too.

But this episode doesn't stop at the problem. Solar capacity in Texas more than doubled in two years. Battery storage tripled. On the grid's hardest day this year, batteries held the line. This episode closes with a straight, practical call: the same technology propping up the whole grid is available at home scale, right now โ€” and no guided meditation this time, just a direct word to go handle your business.

Stick around after the sign-off โ€” this episode is proudly sponsored by Advanced iNERGIES LLC, a Texas-based energy solutions company Don has trusted personally for years. Retail electricity plans, solar, battery backup, generators, and microgrid solutions, with a savings-or-price-protection guarantee. Call (214) 664-5154 or email [email protected] to get started.

The Nerd Reich: The Book, the Blueprint, and the Billionaires Building an Exit From Democracy

Before he left office, a sitting president warned that Silicon Valley's "tech-industrial complex" had become radicalized. Journalist Gil Duran โ€” a former newsroom editor and communications director for Kamala Harris, Governor Jerry Brown, and Senator Dianne Feinstein โ€” spent years documenting exactly what that meant, and this year put it in a book: "The Nerd Reich." Don and Daysha pull the whole blueprint out into the open: a 1997 book that predicted democracy's collapse, the surveillance company Peter Thiel named after a tool of domination on purpose, the anonymous blog post that became actual federal policy as DOGE, and three real, funded private-city projects โ€” including one raising $525 million to build in Greenland at the exact moment Trump has talked about acquiring it.

They trace the money straight back to names from recent episodes โ€” JD Vance, Elon Musk โ€” and land on the word Duran himself uses for all of it, handled carefully and attributed directly to his reporting. Then the episode does what Prodigal always does: names the oldest lie underneath the newest technology, and closes with a real, published study on what it actually takes to tip a society back toward truth.

The Machine That Outlives Him: Fifty Years of Oligarchy, a Congress on the Take, and the War That Proves the Point

    DESCRIPTION:

Trump is not the disease. He's what fifty years of a project finally looks like once it stops hiding. Don and Daysha make the case plainly: even if Trump leaves office, the oligarchy underneath him doesn't go anywhere. The ten richest billionaires in the country grew their combined wealth by $698 billion in a single year. A hundred billionaire families put $2.6 billion into the 2024 election. And a Congress bought by dark money on both sides is also trading stock on the regulations its own members write โ€” one representative alone logged over $59 million in trades.

Then they zoom out to Kyiv, where U.S. envoys just made their first visit since the invasion โ€” proof the same separation-sickness that's hollowing out Washington is playing out between nations too. From there, the episode turns inward: hierarchy stacked floor by floor, from the Senate down to your own dinner table, and what it actually takes to become part of the 25 percent a real, published study says is enough to tip a whole society.

This episode closes different than any before it โ€” Daysha leads it in, and for the first time, Don carries the entire guided meditation solo, in a register deeper and slower than anything he's done on this show.

Not So Secret: The Ballot Flaw AI Just Made Easy, the Fake Threat Getting More Airtime, and the Map Rewritten Before You Voted

Somebody can find out exactly how you voted. Not guess โ€” find out. Georgia's voting system stores your ballot in the same order voters checked in, and a researcher just proved AI tools have made that exploit trivial for anyone to pull off. Georgia's own election office admits there's a fix sitting right there โ€” and admits it isn't installed before November.

Meanwhile, a U.S. senator is getting national coverage for a voting-machine hacking claim PBS fact-checked as unsubstantiated, and Missouri's Supreme Court just blocked a congressional map Republicans rewrote to flip a seat before anyone got to vote on it โ€” a map Missouri's own AG is now calling a "constitutional crisis," only after the public got a say.

Don and Daysha lay out the pattern: the real threat to your vote moves quiet and unfixed, the fake threat gets a senator's platform, and the map gets rewritten before you're asked. Then it closes different โ€” Don leads it in, Daysha carries it out โ€” landing on a real, published study out of Penn: the actual tipping point for large-scale social change isn't a majority. It's 25 percent.

  • THE PODCAST / Episode 10: Whoever Wins, Wins: What Trump, Obama, and Three Billionaires Actually Told You About Who Owns AI

    Send us Fan Mail

This week, Trump posted that the only AI guardrail this country needs is him โ€” "a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT" โ€” then called AI safety concerns a "SICK conspiracy." Days earlier, Obama privately told Hakeem Jeffries that AI power sitting in "private hands" could be dangerous, and floated a "framework for a very public conversation" โ€” once Democrats win back the House. Neither one answered the only question that matters: when this technology makes somebody a trillionaire, does anything come back to the people whose data and labor built the value?

Don and Daysha go after the answer nobody's giving you. Dario Amodei's own warning to his industry about "a mob coming for you." What Bezos, Musk, and Altman are actually proposing, and why none of it costs them anything. The real dollar figures behind the grid alerts and rate hikes AI data centers are already putting on your electric bill. And the one place in America that's been running a working version of an AI-era dividend since 1982 โ€” while lawmakers today can barely agree to have the conversation.

It closes the way it needs to: a slow, still guided piece called "What You Don't Wait For," landing on the one thing in this entire episode that was never up for negotiation.

Sainted: Trump's 9/11 Story, Charlie Kirk Day, and the Machine That Makes Saints

Four days before this episode, standing in front of actual 9/11 responders on the twenty-fifth anniversary, the President told a room that firefighters carried him out of Ground Zero. PolitiFact can't find him there. FDNY can't confirm it happened. Forty-eight hours earlier, Utah's governor declared September 10th "Charlie Kirk Day" โ€” a state proclamation, one year after his assassination, with Turning Point running the memorial like a revival.

Don and Daysha take both stories apart in the same episode, on purpose โ€” a man inventing himself a hero out of nothing, and a movement building a saint out of a real death โ€” and name the one mechanism underneath both: when the truth is inconvenient or a loss is too painful to sit with, build a myth instead. They hold the grief around Kirk's death as real without letting the twelve-month canonization on top of it pass unexamined, take on the "you're being disrespectful" pushback directly, and widen the lens to the same instinct running in all of our own lives โ€” the people we've built into heroes or saints so we wouldn't have to face something unresolved.

This one's got teeth โ€” explicit language throughout โ€” and it closes the way it needs to: a slow, still guided moment titled "The Witness," landing on today's actual anniversary with the one thing in the whole episode that was never a performance.
