🇧🇬🇷🇺 “It’s complicated”: Understanding perceptions of Russia in Bulgaria
🇪🇺 “United in diversity” is the EU’s motto. Europe is presently united in fear and condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but some member states are more closely connected to the history and problems of the Black Sea region. In this article, Vessela Mitkova examines the complexity of Bulgarian attitudes to Russia, and how these have changed in the wake of aggressions. #bulgaria #russia #eu
🇧🇬 This is the first article for Arbury Road by Vessela, a Bulgarian PhD student who is studying the external relations of the EU, with a focus on the US and Russia.
A new female statue in Padua (🇮🇹)
🎙 New episode of our podcast about an initiative undertaken in the city of Padua. A motion was presented with the proposal to add a statue of a woman among the statues of "Prato della Valle", the main square of Padua and one of the largest squares in the European Union (see the picture).
🗣 Paco Martino Ruzzante, co-founder of Arbury Road and PhD in Economic History at the University of Cambridge, talked about it with Margherita Colonnello, municipal councillor of the PD in Padua, and signatory together with Simone Pillitteri of the motion "Padua deserves a statue of a woman".
🗽 Just think that in the entire region of Veneto there are only 6 statues representing women (not taking allegories into account)! Time for a change! #padova #equality #genderequality #pratodellavalle #aboutpadova # elections2022 #padovasocial

🌹 Happy 8th of March!
🚺 In this difficult time for everyone, when the war after more than two years of pandemic increases uncertainty about the future, we must not forget that women have paid a very high price. The coronavirus pandemic has had an alarming impact on women globally, with women being disproportionately affected by job loss and burnout as they juggle work with caregiving demands. An ILO report also affirms that, even if the war does not affect the economic recovery, fewer women than men will regain employment during the COVID-19 recovery.
🎙 It is time to change. And in this regard to celebrate this day with you we want to share a new episode of our podcast about a very beautiful initiative undertaken in the city of Padua. A motion was presented with the proposal to add a statue of a woman among the statues of "Prato della Valle", the main square of Padua and one of the largest squares in the European Union (see the picture).

Dear Arbury Road reader,
First of all, thanks for subscribing to our newsletter. As always we remind you that Arbury Road lives thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, and that you can help us by sharing our content on social media and by making a small donation HERE. As little as 5 euros can really make a difference for us and help us to keep Arbury Road independent. Now let’s dig into some of our recent publications starting from the topic that is worrying us all across Europe, the crisis in Ukraine.
✍️ Ukraine and Ukrainians in Europe
Read Katren’s latest article on the crisis. Katren is an Australian citizen with Ukrainian origins and a European cosmopolitan heart. In her article, she answers a question at the centre of the right of self-determination of the Ukrainian people: Does Ukraine have a European culture? Her very short history of Ukraine helps us better understand the country at the centre of the crisis.
🎙 End of life treatment: towards a European legislation
Now let’s come to the first of two recent podcasts that we’ve published. The first is on a really important and delicate topic, End of life treatment and euthanasia. Prof. Caterina Garone, scientist and member of Arbury Road, discussed the topic with two excellent panellists:
👤 Miss Sophie in’t Veld, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2004 for the Renew Europe Group and parliamentary leader of the delegation of the Dutch social-liberal political party Democrats 66 (D66);
👤 Mr Marco Cappato European politician and activist, a former member of the European parliament, treasurer of the Associazione Luca Coscioni and founder of Eumans.
🏳️🌈 In this interesting and engaging podcast they discuss dignity, the right of self-determination, European national health, biomedical research on end-of-life treatment, and the pan-European citizens movement.
🚨 This podcast was recorded just before the decision of the Italian Constitutional court to block the two referendums on the right to die and on the legalisation of Cannabis promoted by Cappato’s Association Luca Coscioni. We invite everyone to activate to fight for these rights!
🎙 A new progressive agricultural policy for Europe? episode #2 Podcast in 🇩🇪
🎙 What do #equality and #agripolitics have to do with each other? How does our agriculture affect life around the world? In another recent podcast, Arturo passionately discusses these and other questions for us with the feminist and agricultural expert in the European Parliament Maria Noichl. 🇪🇺
🌱 After the first podcast (https://anchor.fm/arbury-road/episodes/Arbury-Road-Podcast---A-new-progressive-agricultural-policy-for-Europe--Podcast-in-e16vumm) with her for the #GAP (en. #CAP) we shed light on the many other facets of agricultural policy. 🚜👩🌾 Enjoy the podcast!:
🇪🇺 "European funds are linked to respect for the rule of law"
Finally, let’s close with a piece of good news.
🇪🇺⚖️With a fundamental ruling, the European Court of Justice has given a lesson to Poland and Hungary: those who do not respect democratic standards do not receive European funds.
💪🏻Now the European Commission can start the procedure to block funds to those who have shown in recent years that they do not respect the fundamental values of the European Union!

🎙 Hopes from the new German Government
🎙 New episode of the Arbury Road Podcast. We were lucky enough to have as a guest Demir Hakan, Elected Member of the German parliament for the constituency of Berlin Neukölln in the 2021 German federal elections.
🇩🇪 We had a chat about the elections, what brought the SPD (and Greens) to success and to form a coalition with the liberals. Finally, we discussed what are the hopes for the new government. Topics in detail:
✅ What internal changes helped the SPD win the elections
✅ Can the SPD be a model for other European progressive forces?
✅ What are some of the main points of the programme - minimum wage, welfare interventions, legalisation of cannabis.
✅ What are the hopes to realise this programme within the new traffic light coalition. 🚦

🎙 The rich history of Romani people in Europe
🇩🇪 Another recent episode of our podcast, made by some of our most active German members.
🇪🇺 Romani people have been living in Europe for hundreds of years. In this episode, we discuss their rich history and the multitude of problems this community is facing, ranging from common ignorance about this long history to open and widespread Anti-Romani sentiment. Felix Schaumann (Climate science student) and Ana-maria Trăsnea (Secretary of State in Berlin, SPD) talk to Radoslav Ganev, founder of RomAnity e.V. and the Student Association of Sinti and Roma in Germany (SVSRD), about the situation of Romani people in Europe today and about ideas on how to move on from here - in the fight for a united Europe without racism.
🇩🇪 The podcast is in German but you can find the subtitles in other languages on youtube.

✍️ The Lights of Europe. Chapter III: The crisis of the democratic conscience
Sylvia Durand is back with another article oh her series The Lights of Europe, in which she uses pieces of art by Georges de la Tour to reflect on today’s politics. This time she starts from the Brawl of the Musicians to analyse the crisis that Democracies are facing today. This is particularly relevant one year from the assault of Capitol Hill (6th of January 2021). She writes:
For some time now, public resentment seems to have reached a point of no return, or at least it has gone well beyond the type of opposition that we were used to. Until recently, different ideas and political positions could be strongly opposed, but still rely on a common thinking and shared language. They relied on common facts. But now, we have left the realm of rational debate, and anger has broken out of the democratic space: it is nowhere and everywhere, it has no ideology and all of them together. Resentment doesn’t aim at opposing specific arguments, it simply denies the whole institution and undermines the function of political representation.

🇦🇫 Afghan mother of two froze to death attempting to cross Turkish border 🇹🇷
🌹Afghan mother of two lost her life due to the freezing cold along the mountainous crossing between Iran and Turkey. The woman was found barefooted in the snow last Saturday, having put her socks on her two children like gloves to keep them warm.
Afghan women have two alternatives: to submit to the Taliban or to try to escape risking their lives, in the complete indifference of Europe that has not kept the promises that it has made. We invite everyone to sensibilise your friends.
🇪🇺 EURO at 20
Finally, let’s close by celebrating the 20th anniversary of the creation of the EURO.
📌 Now, nineteen different countries use the euro;
📌 Euro is the 2nd most important global currency;
📌 Euro is used in over a 1/3 of transactions worldwide.
🇪🇺Euro has allowed EU countries to have a greater influence in the global economy and is a tangible sign of our shared European identity.
‼️But there is still a long way to go:
1️⃣ The European banking system must be strengthened and monetary union achieved through policies that do not only favour the richest countries.
2️⃣ Digitisation of money must be a priority.
3️⃣ Monetary policies must be accompanied by expansive fiscal and economic policies and aimed at reducing inequality and youth unemployment, developing the most impoverished areas and promoting the welfare of the population. Next Generation EU is a good first step, but we must continue in this direction.
