Background Briefing 05-07-2019 by Progressive Voices

Emotions overtake Karel today as the nation moves in to uncharted, and inhospitable, territory. Have we truly lost it all? And if so, when do we grieve?

If you are with a man that has a beard, Melissa has this warning for you both. Plus, she talks about one scene in Avengers: Endgame that gives women something they've never had before. And there is a marathon women are participating in worldwide, but it's not running shoes they're wearing.

We seem to think there's so much of it, but, as this observation notes, there isn't. It's running out, and we need to be a little more urgent about things. So, why aren't we? Well, here's why.

How is that humans can be both the nicest and the nastiest of species? Biological anthropologist RICHARD WRANGHAM wrestles with that question in THE GOODNESS PARADOX: The Strange Relationship Between Virtue & Violence in Human Evolution. Though our capacity for planned and devastating violence remains unrivaled, Wrangham offers a provocative theory that capital punishment has been instrumental in humans becoming extremely peaceful - relative to other species - in our daily interactions. Can this understanding help us navigate our darkening society?

The 2019 Muslim Poll is out. Subtitled, Predicting and Preventing Islamophobia, it was co-authored by Institute for Social Policy and Understanding Research Director Dalia Mogahed, who will join us with highlights.

Another week in the United States of Serfs and Lords, we watched as a con man traitor further destroyed democracy and the opposition party decides if the "polls" favor impeachment.

Also - the American Sheeple seem fine with the "middle class" meaning that those who work for a living are one missed paycheck away from catastrophe.

Welcome to the last days of the Grand Experiment - where a (so-called) President's love of dictators is "democracy" and a "great economy" means billionaires run away with the bank.

But... Shhhh.... don't discuss the true records of Democrats who helped bring us to this sorry state.

We'll discuss another week of maddness.
