Welcome to Season 4 of Psych Talk! To kick off Season 4 I talk all about "high functioning" mental health disorders. "High functioning" is not a clinical diagnosis or term, but generally refers to individuals who struggle with a mental health disorder but from the outside, others are unable to tell. These are the individuals that are able to continue to function in their work/school and personal life; however, when alone and on the inside they are fighting an internal battle. Although any mental health condition can be considered high functioning, in this episode I specifically highlight depression, anxiety, autism, and OCD. I also talk about steps to take if you feel that you have a high functioning mental health condition.
Additionally, I provide some updates as to what I have been up to the past couple of months.

Support the showIn today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Toni Marinucci, a registered dietician who teaches people how not to diet. Toni is the author of the #1 Best Seller Once Upon A Diet on Amazon, where she discusses the parallels between dieting, dating, and relationships. Toni discusses her journey to becoming a dietician and how she started working with individuals on how not to diet. Toni also distinguishes herself from anti-diet dietitians who solely use intuitive eating, which she emphasizes is important in the dietician space, by acknowledging that sometimes there are reasons that eating habits need to be modified and works with her clients on identifying the intention and goals behind those modifications. We discuss the parallels between dieting, dating, and romantic relationships and Toni identifies three important questions for individuals to reflect on if they feel they are stuck in a cycle of dieting or dating the wrong people. Toni provides tips on how to break the cycle of unhealthy dieting or dating (and what that means), as well as words of encouragement for those who currently feel stuck in that cycle.

Support the showIn July 2022 an article entitled "The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence” was published and found "no consistent evidence of there being an association between serotonin and depression, and no support for the hypothesis that depression is caused by lowered serotonin activity or concentrations". The results of this study hit the media and social media rather quickly and many inaccurate conclusions were drawn, people questioned everything they believed about why they were depressed, and the utility and effectiveness of serotonin was questioned. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I summarize the findings of the article, discussed the chemical imbalance theory, and more specifically the serotonin theory of depression, and discuss why these results are not actually shocking to those of us in the mental health field. I also highlight the inaccurate conclusions being drawn from the studies and future directions for where we need to go from here.
