Pullin from the Stacks episodes

  • Pullin from the Stacks - Dreams
Been a super busy month of travel and work (and digging!) but here's a few selections that have come across the crates recently, a variety of laid back sounds and flavors as we finish off October. Enjoy! More much soon. Tracklist: Langston Hughes, Johnny Almond Music Machine, Peppermint Rainbox, Owen Yateman's Big Fat Brarse, Cream De Coco, Feather, Stanley Cowell, Denis King

  • Pullin from the Stacks - Vibes and Stuff, a Low End Theory Dedication
Last month marked 35 years since A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" album dropped, an album which literally changed the trajectory of my life. I played that cassette so many times the writing had worn off five years later when some coked out graffiti writer from the Bronx stole it from me freshman year in college. My ultimate mixtape goal is some type of crazy ATCQ megamix, and hopefully it will still happen one of these days, but for now, here's a little selection of Low End Theory-related cuts, whether OG samples or recent covers.

  • Pullin from the Stacks - John Coltrane 100th Birthday Dedication
Bought my first John Coltrane album in 1997 at one of the old St. Marks record stores that's long gone, haven't looked back. Hard to write words to describe the beauty in the music. Several years ago I grabbed a Japanese box set of Coltrane tunes that came with a brief interview with the legend himself on bonus 45. I've included a clip here, but you can listen to the full recording on my Soundcloud. Salute!

  • Pullin from the Stacks - Hip-Hop 45s and 300th Episode!
Amazing to be at episode 300 of Pullin from the Stacks! I started this podcast 14 years ago. Thanks so much to everyone who has tuned in once, twice, twenty or a hundred times! Appreciate you all. Looking forward to many more episodes. I've been playing some hip-hop wax every 100 episodes so here's another short mix from the 45s box. Tracklist: Biz Markie, Fat Boys, Slick Rick, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Tone Loc, Digable Planets, Bahamadia, Janet Jackson ft Q-Tip, Guru ft Chaka Khan, DJ Spinna ft Phonte

Selecting some recent digs and purchases from the past few months that I haven't been able to put in rotation yet! All kinds of sounds and flavors, breaks and covers. Enjoy! • Pullin from the Stacks - Brian Auger Favorites
Brian Auger's "Closer to It" LP was one of the first records and first breakbeats I copped long ago, and his version of Eugene McDaniels' "Compared to What" on there remains a favorite. I bought most of these records many, many years ago - mainly for samples, but over the years I've come to really dig into the songs and music themselves. The living legend is still out there making music today, and it felt important to put together a small tribute to his work, a few days from his 87th birthday. Salute!

  • Pullin from the Stacks - A Little Portland Funk
A little tribute to some of the incredible music and musicians in the hometown. Summertime Portland funk and hip-hop off the digital decks. Apologies for the sloppy mixing, still figuring out this new mixer! Tracklist: Mic Capes ft. Farnell Newton and jaminah, Shine Runna, Libretto ft. Jumbo and Theory Hazit, Trox, Cool Nutz, Rev Shines, Alley Oop, Vursatyl, Alex Stange

  • Pullin from the Stacks - Thank You Abdullah Ibrahim!
One of my all time favorite musicians has moved on - Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand, South African legend, whose tunes fueled the anti-apartheid movement. This tribute is long overdue since I have played his records consistently over many years. Truly majestic and inspirational music. These are just a couple of my favorites. Tracklist: Mannenberg, Bra Joe from Killamanjaro, Liberation Dance, Sathima, Ishmael
