Proverbs 31:4-7 

[4] It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

Beginning with this text and going into several others, we examine the Biblical position on drunkenness.  Drunkenness is defined and scriptures on drinking, personal and national drunkenness, tolerance of drunkenness, those who justify drunkenness, and curses on drunkenness are examined, statistics on drinking and its effects are brought out, and the position of the church is staked out clearly.

John 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

The important question that must be settled before any doctrine can be taught is this, "Do you love God?" The mercies of God are for those who love him.  The promises of God are for those who love him.  The children of God are those who love him.

To find the answer, we ask these questions: Do you desire him? Do you speak of him? Does your heart burn for him? Is he more important than others?

Also, we ask ourselves whether our love has grown cold. Do we take him for granted? Are we getter deeper in our love toward him or more shallow?  

Do we keep his commandments?  For this is what our Lord said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Do you love God?

John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city,...

When the Samaritan woman believed on Jesus, she left her waterpot and went into the city to tell others of this Messiah whom she had met.  The waterpot is of great significance.  It represented her plans and priorities, including what seemed necessary for her very survival.  It represented her possessions as waterpots of the day were valuable both monetarily and sentimentally, often being family heirlooms. As with other earthen vessels in scriptures, it also represented her very person.

The Samaritan woman left everything when she believed,  When Jesus sat upon your well, did you leave all? Did your plans and priorities for your life become unimportant as you yielded to his plans and priorities for your life? Do you now consider all of your possessions as his, to be left at his feet? Would you consider wealth or family traditions of the utmost importance, or would you leave them to serve Jesus?  Would you give your very person into the hands of the Lord and trust him with every detail of your life?

Have you left your waterpot? Did you really believe?

1 Samuel 30:1-6 We see in this passage of scripture the workings of God in the life of David.  David had found himself comfortably settled into the Philistine town of Ziklag, but this was not where David needed to be.  From seeing how that God caused David's comfortable place to be removed from him, we can understand that what seems like catastrophe in our own lives can be the sovereign hand of God working us toward the place we need to be in His plan.

 Luke 19:37-40 [37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; [38] Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. [39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. [40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.  

Jesus came down from the Mount of Olives entering into Jerusalem to go into the Temple to the cries of Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord.  This cry was a Messianic cry as found in Psalm 118, proclaiming the the Hope of Israel had arrived.  The Pharisees objected, not believing that Jesus was indeed the Christ.  Jesus' response tells not only that he would raise up from a dead, deaf, blind people (the Gentiles) his followers, but also for what purpose he would raise them - praise!

The gospel is preached using the story of the rich young ruler recorded in Mark 10:17-27.  The young ruler came running to Jesus, kneeled to Jesus, and prayed to Jesus, yet remained unsaved because he would not forsake all that he had.  Even today salvation is not in the running to Jesus, kneeling before him, or praying to him.  True belief means forsaking all that one has or is.  True belief, saving belief, requires all.  The gospel we preach is an all or nothing gospel.
