SuperTalk 2x13 - Mr & Mrs Mxyzptlk

Supergirl Season 2, Episode 13, “Mr & Mrs Mxyzptlk”, aired February 20, 2017

This episode of Supergirl was tock-ish. We were VERY excited for the arrival of Mr Mxyzptlk, but as the villian of the week he ultimately fell very flat. With Mr. Mxyzptlk we had a prime opportunity to address the Super Problem, as this is a villan you can’t beat with punches. Unfortunately, Mxyzptlk’s potential is squandared. First in that the trickster fun that could have been had wasn’t had at all; and second in that he was essentially a misogynistic jerk.

The strength of this week’s episode was the strength of them all, the relationships.

We had three main relationship arcs with Mon-El and Kara, Alex and Maggie, and a pleasant surprise with Wynn and a new love interest! We were worried that this episode would derail the MONGIRL ship and beat this dead trope to death, but thankfully that turns out to not be the case.

When it comes to Maggie and Alex, a powerful trauma from Maggie’s past manifests in her disdain for Valentine’s day. This creates some real tension between her and Alex, but the resolution of that tension falls a bit flat.

Our favorite was the development of Wynn’s new relationship which literally comes out of nowhere. Wynn while fun has been pretty one note this season as the tech guy that makes funny quips and does tech stuff. What starts with a lovelorn Wynn about to get beat up at the bar turns into a very touching, new relationship.

By far the biggest problem we had with the episode was the banishment of Mxyzptlk. If you’re not aware, you can send Mxyzptlk back to the 5th dimension by getting him to say his name backwards. Somehow saying it backwards out loud turns into typing it backwards on a Kryptonian keyboard.

SuperTalk: Luthors

Supergirl Season 2, Episode 12, “Luthors”, aired February 14, 2017

TWO TOCKS IN A ROW!!! The Super Problem is still a problem with Supergirl (and the CW shows in general), but this was a FANTASTIC episode! This week the Luthors are back! Lena may or may not be evil, Metallo is a bit frothy, Lillian is pretty much the star of the episode and the MONGIRL ship might have wind in its sails!

The relationships and human details of the show continue to be its greatest strength, with the Super Problem its biggest weakness. If the writers can figure out a way to write Supergirl and her villains so that she doesn’t seem like a fool when it comes to her abilities, then this show will be perfect! Lillian Luthor has been the best villain so far, but her powered pals and Supergirl continue to faff about in fights.

SuperTalk: Luthors

Eliot’s torn between two kingdoms, Margo takes solace by fortifying her bitchy exterior. Penny and Q go off on one excellent adventure. Oh and in case any one forgot Magic is completely going wonky.

Talk about a divine hour of television, "Divine Elimination" was primetime at it's best. First up, the Beast/Martin's curse reared it's ugly head, the minute all of our royals were back together. Elliot clearly did a lot of work getting the throne room back into some semblance of order. You know, no dead bodies and someone for everyone to settle down for a leisure day of ruling. He didn't sound too happy about all the fun times missed with everyone else getting tramp stamps and cool Keiko demons.
