The Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday episodes of Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.
Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.
We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. As the month progresses, we continue to learn new verses to our songs and poems. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays.
After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today we hear the story of Wild Hawk Lake, based on a traditional tale from Japan.
Long ago, a girl named Wilma lived at the foot of a great mountain. There had not been rain for a long time, and the farms in her village had become dry. The people were worried they wouldn’t have anything to harvest. One day Wilma found a deep lake of fresh, clean water while exploring the mountain, and she knew this water could help her village. She found an overflow spot where she could bring the water to her village, but it was blocked by a stone gate secured with a lock! Wilma has to find the key to the gate so she can bring the water to her village.

Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.
During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time slightly longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month we are learning Pretzel Breathing.
After circle time, we hear a story together. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical tale or a teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of Shimmer and Glimmer’s New Home, a story about separation or divorce. Shimmer and Glimmer live with their fishy parents in a rocky cove in the sea. One day a big storm comes to the cove and causes it to change. Now it is two rocky coves instead of one, with one parent fish living on one side and the other living on the other. Thankfully, there is still a long path connecting the two coves. One of the first things the fishies do in their new home is gather some soft seaweed and make a cozy bed nestled in the rocks. Now they have a place to sleep in both coves.

One hot morning, Grandpa Ivy wakes up and realizes it’s a perfect day to float down the river in his raft. As his raft floats down the river, he passes the homes of many of his friends: Little Frog, Little Mouse, Little Squirrel, Little Deer, and Little Bear. One by one, his friends join him on his raft until it is quite full! As they go around a final turn before Grandpa Ivy’s home, the raft topples over and sends them all into the river laughing!
