After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today we hear the story of Where Has Father Sun Gone? In this story, the creatures of the forest miss Father Sun and worry he may never return. They decide to go visit him and ask him when he will return.

These are stories that address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. This pedagogical tale is about three gnome brothers who live and work together inside a mountain. Two of the brothers work with hammers and picks, digging for gems and crystals. They are named Rickety-Tickety Gnome and Clickety-Clackety Gnome and together they make a lot of noise!
The job of the third gnome, Rub-a-dub Gnome, is to polish the gems and crystals. He prefers things to be quiet and doesn’t like all the noise and commotion his brothers make.

He then leaves the felt to dry outside, where a little mouse finds it. The mouse thinks it would make the perfect blanket for the cold days of winter and gratefully takes it home with him.

Father Sun comes out from behind the clouds to let the girl know that she must tend to her spark within during the colder and darker days. The little girl doesn’t think she will remember when darkness surrounds her.

Father Sun tells her he will share one of his sparks with her if she will build a safe house for it. This spark can remind her to tend her light during the dark months ahead.

The little girl works hard to create a beautiful lantern. She presents it to Father Sun, who gives her a spark to tend all winter.
