The Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday episodes of Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.
Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the Schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.
We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. We start a new circle time at the beginning of the month, slowly learning the songs and poems together throughout the month. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays.
After circle time, we listen to a story together. Ms. Becca tells us a Grandpa Ivy story the first week of each month. This week, we hear the story of Grandpa Ivy & the Hedgehogs.
Grandpa Ivy wakes to the smell of frost in the air and realizes he needs to finish harvesting his vegetable garden. After spending much of the day working, he takes a break to have some tea before he finishes harvesting. Then he falls asleep sitting on his porch! He sleeps until the sun sets, and the hedgehogs across the creek wake up for the night. They see Grandpa Ivy hasn’t finished harvesting his vegetables and know a frost is coming. They work together to harvest the rest of the garden for him and, when doing so, find a rather large pumpkin--too large to move. So they leave it in the garden and use it as their winter home!

There is a woman who is using her spinning wheel to turn wool into yarn. She will use the yarn to make a new sweater for herself because hers is getting old and worn and no longer keeps her warm. A curious mouse visits and asks what the woman is making and what she will do with her old sweater when her new one is complete. The little mouse returns every day for the rest of the week, asking the woman questions about what she is doing…ever curious about what will happen to the old clothes when they are replaced with new ones. Listen to this week's story to hear what happens.

Grandmother Pumpkin lives on the corner of a busy city block. She uses her city lot to grow pumpkins; a LOT of pumpkins. Each year she grows enough pumpkins for each child in the neighborhood. However, this year, she can’t seem to find her pumpkin seeds, and it’s time to gather them before Jack Frost arrives! Thankfully Clara, one of the children in the neighborhood, offers to help her find them.

This week’s story is our pedagogical or teaching story for October. In this story, we visit a pumpkin pixie named Pip who forgets the importance of balancing rest and play with “getting done what needs to get done.” Pip is visited by ten tiny fairies who take control of his hands and finally do what needs to be done around the pumpkin.

After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of Little Child Knight. Becca adapted this story from an original tale by Suzanne Down (called Little Boy Knight). It is shared with permission. Learn more about Suzanne and her classes & books at her website: www.junipertreepuppets.com
A young child loves to ride their pony and pretend to be a knight. One day they are riding out farther than before and come upon a castle. A king comes out of the castle and asks the young child if they have come to rescue the missing villager from the dragon. The child agrees to rescue the villager. The king gives the child a cape of golden light that imparts courage and strength. “Here’s your cape of golden light; to give you courage, strength, and might.”
The young child travels into the mountains and enters the dragon's cave. The dragon recognizes the young child’s courage and seeks the child’s understanding. The dragon is lonely and wants a friend to be with him through the long winter. He and the young child make a deal, and the dragon releases the villager and spends the winter living in the village, keeping the fire going at the center of the town.

After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of The Star House. This is Becca’s version of a popular autumn tale.
This is a simple story about a Little Apple Tree who looks at the sky at night and wishes they were a star. Mother Earth reminds them to be patient and trust that they are special, too. As the apple tree grows bigger and changes and grows apples, they continue to wish they were a star, and Mother Earth continues to remind them to be patient and wait and see. Once the Little Apple Tree has ripe apples, Mother Earth slices an apple top from the bottom, showing the Apple Tree that there is a star inside each of their apples. The Little Apple is overjoyed to learn they have been a house for stars all along.
