Purposeful Women of God

Have you ever felt the need to escape?  Just a time to wash all your troubles away?  I’ve heard stories of kids running away from home and a lot of times the kids had great homes but they were running away out of rebellion.  Sometimes people can get so deep into their escapes that they run away from home leaving behind the only true people that care about them.  A lot of times they escape into sin whether it be alcohol, sexual sin, drugs, satanic worship or bad relationships - it seems there’s a deep drawing to these worldly behaviors, they don’t know who they are outside of them and they think they need them to be complete.  This is just a little piece of the woman’s story we will be looking at today and that woman is Gomer.

There is so much to learn from our story today it’s an interesting one that has a very strange beginning but ends with love and redemption. It shows no matter how bad we mess things up in this life that our Lord is always willing to stretch out his hand and pick us back up.

We can’t believe we are finally on our last episode in our old testament women of the bibles series we can’t thank all of you enough for following along with us through these last 20 episodes. We hope you have enjoyed learning about all of these women as much as we have.

Our story today is about a common, poor orphaned girl who would grow up to become the wife of the King but her story doesn’t quite become all that we would hope it would be…life in the palace isn’t always ballgowns and parties, it comes with great responsibility and sometimes heartache and that is what we see as we study the life and legacy of Queen Esther in today’s lesson.

As we study Queen Esther today, something important to note is that God’s name is not mentioned one time in this entire book of the Bible, no words spoken from Him, no proclamations from His prophets, but throughout this Book we will see His divine hand clearly at work in the lives of His people.  As we share this story today, be on the lookout for God from beginning to end.

Esther was heroic and risked her life to save her people she had one of the biggest “for such a time as this” moments in history. She realized their was a purpose for her being chosen to be in the King’s castle and that purpose was greater than she could have ever imagined! What has been your “for such a time as this” moment or moments? Take some time to reflect on those and know that God still has great plans and purpose for your life! You were put here on this earth at this very moment in history FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!

Have you ever known someone so evil they would stop at nothing to get what they wanted,  tearing down everything and anything in their path?  Think of Hitler or Jeffrey Dahmer when we hear those names our first thought of them is pure evil.  What about evil couples do any come to mind? What about Bonnie & Clyde known for their multiple bank robberies and killings?  It seems evil really does come in twos and it holds true for our evil couple today King Ahab and Jezebel. Jezebel would stop at nothing to get what she wanted.

Jezebel had a lot of influence on her husband Ahab but as we’ll learn today her influence didn’t produce greatness but caused a lot of harm to her family and everyone around her.

Have you ever wondered what it means to have true wisdom? Today’s lesson is one of those stories that if you’re not specifically looking for it, you will just read right through it.  It’s an interesting story, however our woman in this lesson is unnamed and very often overlooked. The bible simply describes her as a “wise” woman. It’s a very unusual story but there’s so much to learn from this wise unnamed woman.

As you can tell by our title we felt a great need to defend our leading lady today as there have been a lot of misconceptions surrounding her story. We grew up hearing preachers and pastors painting such a negative picture of her and as we began diving deeper we realized those things we heard all those years ago aren’t true at all!

It’s so important that we be our own fact checkers. While pastors & preachers are God’s called men to shepherd his flocks we must not get into the habit of just taking their word for it. We should be diligent in doing our own study after all 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us we should study to show ourselves approved. If we would have took the time back in the day to study this woman for ourselves we would have came to a completely different conclusion about her life than the picture those preachers painted.

Have you ever had a time that you were mistreated or used by someone?  What if that someone was a person you respected and should have been a safe place for you but they ended up being the ultimate betrayer?  That’s what we will be diving into today as we study the wives of David.

Today we will be looking specifically at David’s wives Michal & Abigail and discussing how they were both mistreated by different people in their lives . Even though they both suffered unfair treatment the way they handled their mistreatment was very different. We see one grow to live a very bitter life she allowed the bitterness to rob her of all her joy while the other never turned away from her godly character even though she was not living in the best of circumstances. There’s so much to learn from these two women.

We hope you enjoy getting a glimpse into the lives of these two women and that you can take something away from the teaching that will change the way you handle difficult situations in your life.

Have you ever wanted/yearned for something so badly your heart aches?  Maybe it was to become a wife or a mother, maybe for a new job or a home.  And in those circumstances, have you ever looked around you and it seemed like everyone else was getting the blessings you only dreamed of?  We’ve all been there in one way or another.

In this story today, we’re introduced to 2 women, Hannah and Peninnah.  Remember this was a different time in history where polygamy was very common and Hannah and Peninnah are the wives of Elkanah.  Peninnah had several children with Elkanah and would often provoke Hannah because she wasn’t able to have children of her own. Peninnah would nag Hannah so bad that she was grieved in her soul and wouldn’t eat or drink because of her barrenness.

Hannah knew there was only one person she could go to that could help her - on one of their annual trips to Shiloh Hannah went to the temple by herself and poured her heart out to God her prayer was so intense that Eli the priest thought she was drunk. He must have felt really bad when he confronted her and she told him that she was a woman of sorrowful spirit and hasn’t had anything to drink but was pouring her soul out before the Lord.

The amazing thing about this story is when Hannah left the temple her countenance changed she was no longer sad and she began eating again. God hadn’t answered her prayer at that point but she left everything she had on the altar trusting that God was going to answer her prayer. If only we could pray and have the faith Hannah did!

Today we are discussing the original “femme fatale” the famed bad girl, Delilah. This story is full of deceit, anger, betrayal and ultimately death! Delilah used her beauty to betray Samson but as we’ll discuss Samson had his own flaws that led to him being in this toxic relationship. Delilah used her influence for worldly gain but it cost Samson his life. This made us think how are you using the influence you have?

Samson was so deep in sin he couldn’t see that Delilah was only using him for monetary gain. We must always remember that sin will take us further than we ever want to go!

In our lesson today we are walking through Judges 4 and a portion of chapter 5.  This is a story of courage and bravery among 2 women - one of which you’ve probably heard in Sunday School, but the second woman has a story that is so hardcore and even gruesome that it’s often sidestepped or overlooked,  The scripture today is about Deborah, a prophetess and judge, and Jael, a woman among a group of nomads living in tents who made a quick decision that could have cost her her life.

In today’s episode we are wrapping up the story of Ruth talking about the redemptive plan God had for her and Naomi. This has to be one of our favorite stories in the bible. Amidst the tragedy they faced we see the hope they found in turning back to God and trusting in his provision.

Only God could have put Ruth in the position to meet her kinsman redeemer Boaz. The way Boaz cared for Ruth and made sure her and Naomi had all they needed reminds me of the love God has for each of us. He’s constantly pouring out those handfuls of purpose caring for our every need and then some.

In the season of grief and tragedy when Naomi thought she lost it all God placed Ruth in her life who stuck with her to the end. The women in the town told her blessed are you Naomi for your daughter in law which loveth the is better than 7 sons. Blessed be the Lord that has not left you without a kinsman his name shall be famous in Israel and he shall be a restorer of life in your old age. They were talking about Naomi’s grandson Obed who would be the grandfather of the great King David!

Whatever your facing today, whether it’s a big life decision, a health concern, trouble with a family member know that God cares about your every need and he wants you to cast all of your cares upon him because he cares for you. Don’t let this world rob you of the Joy you have in Jesus Christ! We can trust that he is working all things out for our good just as he did for Naomi & Ruth even though we may feel he’s not moving at all! Trust in his timing his plan is always better than our own and some times he calls us to simply stand still and let him move.
