In today’s episode we are going to be studying Ruth chapter 1. There are only 4 chapters in the book of Ruth so if you haven’t read it in it’s entirety we would highly encourage you to do so. It’s only 1 of 2 books of the Bible named after women and it’s the only book named after a non-Jewish woman. 

This story begins with such tragedy and loss as Naomi loses her husband Elimelech and her two sons Mahlon and Chilion and is left with only her two daughter-in-laws Orpah and Ruth but we’ll soon learn that Orpah decides to stay in Moab while Ruth chooses to follow Naomi back to her home town of Bethlehem. It’s hard to believe that hope can come from such tragedy but we get to see God’s redemptive plan for Naomi and Ruth in part 2 of this study next week.

Emily Curtis is the author of the amazing book Hope in the Mourning, a hope filled guide through grief. This book is a compilation of real stories of grief but also the hope that was found in each individual story. Something that was really helpful to us that Emily has done is at the end of each story there are things listed that were helpful and things that weren’t so helpful people did for these families. It’s such an eye opener on how we should properly and helpfully walk alongside others in a time of grieving.

Who doesn’t love a good redemption story, I know we do and today’s episode has to be one of our favorites. Rahab’s story doesn’t begin very well but it sure does end well showing us all it’s not always about how you start but how you finish.

Rahab risked her own life to save two spies that she didn’t even know all because she had heard of the magnificent things their God had done and she too wanted to experience God’s saving power in her life.

Her faith in this moment was unparallel, she trusted that these spies would spare her and her families life when they came to overtake Jericho because she made the quick decision to save their lives. For the first time we see her faith in action and in return her life and the life of her family was saved.

But this is only the beginning of Rahab’s story we know she goes on to marry a man named Salmon (listen for our take on this love story) and has an amazing son named Boaz, yes that is Ruth’s Boaz another amazing love story we can’t wait to talk about but the genealogy doesn’t end there Rahab would be the great-great grandmother to the one and only King David which puts her in the direct lineage of Jesus Christ!

If that’s not a true redemption story I don’t know what is! Only God!

In today’s episode we are finally out of the book of Genesis and looking at two extraordinary women in the book of Exodus. We will be diving into the lives of Jochebed and Miriam.

Jochebed is the mother of Moses and Miriam is his sister but we can’t discuss them without also mentioning two heroic midwives in this story Shiphrah & Puah. Their names are specifically mentioned because they had enough faith and obedience to the Lord to go against the commands of Pharaoh. We should all be living with such boldness that no matter what the world throws at us we would be courageous enough to say I will choose to follow God over man!

Most of you know how the story goes as Jochebed would no longer be able to hide sweet little Moses and she comes up with a plan to hide him in a basket and send him down the river at the time the Pharaohs daughter would be bathing in the same river. What she didn’t expect was the outcome that she would be the one to nurse Moses until it was time to turn him over to the Pharaohs daughter and not only did she nurse him but she got paid to do so! Only God could work out that divine intervention.

Here we go again with another unbelievable women of the bible episode but this week we’re talking about two women, sisters Rachel & Leah. This story is another one that is filled with jealousy, envy and deceit. It will definitely keep you on your toes!

This story starts off so well just as most of the stories we’ve covered so far have, we begin with another love story by the well as Jacob has fled his home to hide from the fury of his brother Esau. As he’s looking for his uncle Laban’s home he meets Laban’s daughter Rachel by the well and it was love at first sight! Rachel takes Jacob back to her home and tells her father Laban everything.

Jacob agrees to work 7 years for Laban for Rachel’s hand in marriage which seems like a very long time but in his words it felt like just a few days for the love he had for her! Awe doesn’t that make your heart melt!

The 7 years are up and it’s finally time for these two love birds to celebrate their wedding day, the day they’ve waited for for 7 long years! Unfortunately this is where we see the happiness end and the deceit enter. This is also where we now see Rachel’s sister Leah become a big part of this story.

In today’s episode we are looking at the life of Rebekah. The story starts so well and is again a love story for the ages, the way her and Isaac come together is such a beautiful depiction of Christ’s love for us.

Rebekah’s willingness to leave her home, follow a stranger to a foreign country and marry a man she’s never met shows the amount of faith she had.

She also had faith to carry her through 20 years of barrenness but we see her faith shaken soon after her sons are born. Yes we said son’(s) this is the first biblical account of twins being born but these weren’t any ordinary twins. We see from the womb these two sons fighting and feuding. I can’t imagine how Rebekah must have felt having her two sons brawling within her.

Shortly after her children are born her faith begins to dwindle and lies and deceit begin to take over. We see her begin to favor one child over the other and this causes an eternal feud.

In today’s episode we’re discussing Lot’s wife. We don’t know much about her but the lesson we can learn from what we do know about her is very important and the reason we chose to discuss her in an episode within this women of the bible series.

As women we often love looking back…looking at photos of when our kids were little or when we first started dating our spouses and we were young and carefree, I even love going through old photos when I was a kid at home with my parents and brother but in this particular story Lot’s wife was given a very specific command to not look back.

So many times we think the old testament accounts are just that, old and outdated and there’s nothing for us to learn from them but we must remember that Lot’s wife is mentioned in a very important verse in the New Testament, Luke 17:32 is penned by God himself and says, “Remember Lot’s Wife.” Such a simple but powerful verse.

Today is part 2 in our study of Sarah & Hagar so if you haven’t listened to that episode you’ll want to go back and listen to it first. Last week we went through the series of events from Genesis 11 - 16 & today we’ll be picking up the study beginning with chapter 17.

We learned last week that this biblical account of Sarah & Hagar is full of deceit, jealousy, anger, rage and everything in between and the saga continues in our study today.

We open up seeing God making Abraham a promise again that he would be the father of many nations and this time we see Sarah mentioned for the first time in that promise. We also see here is where their names are changed to Abraham and Sarah. We see God telling them that Sarah will bare a son and call his name Isaac.

The drama unfortunately for Sarah and Hagar just heats up after Isaac is born and we see friction between him and Ishmael. Abraham and Sarah have to make a decision that ultimately leads to kicking Hagar and Ishmael out of the house. They send them on their way with some bread & water but the bread & water would soon run out and we see Hagar at the end of her rope but just when she thinks all hope is lost Jesus himself hears her cry and meets her needs. What a gracious God we serve he saw and heard Hagar right where she was and showed up to prove she wasn’t alone.

Who says the bible is not interesting? In today’s episode we will be introducing you to Abraham’s wife Sarah and her handmaiden Hagar. This biblical account is full of so much drama you would think it’s straight from your favorite soap opera!

This account is so important in scripture because we know God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations but there was only one problem, Sarah was barren and had no children. We’ll be looking at the role of Sarah discussing her life and the reasons she made some of the decisions she did as well as the role Hagar plays.

There is so much to say about these two women that we are devoting two episodes to their story so we will be continuing this episode next week.

We are so excited about today’s episode covering Noah’s wife. You may be thinking just as we did, there’s really not much we know about Noah’s wife and how can we possibly devote a whole episode to her? But as we began diving into the famous story of Noah and the ark we realized there is so much we can learn about her just by what was not said.

She was a godly example of a wife & mother and her obedience to the Lord is evident in how she supported Noah through his mission to build the ark.

Today we are starting our women of the bible series and thought it would only be fitting to start with the first women Eve. We will be diving into Eve’s life as the first woman, first wife, first sinner, first to receive consequences of sin & the first to receive a promise from God. We don’t know a lot about Eve but can learn so much from these 5 areas of her life.

Eve a lot of times gets a bad wrap but she was faced with the same temptations that we are all faced with today. The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. The serpent was able to deceive Eve to think the perfect life God blessed her with in the garden wasn’t enough and that there was more on the other side and doesn’t the devil get us thinking these very same thoughts today?

Join us as we take a look into Eve’s life and the steps we can take to avoid temptation when it comes our way.
