Fear can be a surprisingly powerful motivator. Though I understand God is not wanting us to live lives marked by abject fear, there is great spiritual danger when we experience no fear at all. A lack of it can cause us to take things like security and assurance to an unbiblical extreme. If it is possible for a Christian to fall from grace and lose their salvation (and the Bible says it is), then a healthy fear of God can be a good thing, motivating us to continued faithfulness and growth.

Because light and darkness are universal experiences, biblical writers and even the Lord Himself often employed this pair of images to convey spiritual truth. In His words and His works Jesus demonstrated Himself to be the Son of God, yet most closed their eyes and stopped their ears. It wasn't a case of insufficent light, but a matter of choosing to remain in darkness. In this section Jesus makes it clear that if we're unable to see Him clearly, the problem lies with us and not Him.

“Walking with God.” It’s a phrase we hear a lot these days, often without the user understanding what it really means. It describes a slow, yet steady progression in the right direction. It can also be a difficult journey requiring long periods of waiting and a vigorous faith. Such is the case with Abraham in this chapter as his walk with his Creator becomes even deeper and richer.
