In the season finale of season 4, I sit down with globe trotter, Tiffany Wright. I follow Tiffany on instagram not only because I personally know her, but also because she travels to the most amazing places. She's quick to catch a flight and road trip down the coast of California or hop in a jeep to explore the Serengeti over across the Atlantic. We talk about Tiffany's fearlessness and how she travelled alone to Africa, how she plans her excursions, and how finding the right tribe to book a trip with is necessary. She also talks about her annual mother/daughter trip and how she developed the desire to be a wanderlust. Our conversation not only inspired me to get out of my small town more often, but most importantly, to push past the fear in order to see the world.

Miranda gets candid as she shares her story of how she made the decision to get on medication after recognizing the challenges she was facing in motherhood. What is also so relatable about her story is her habits of planning out her life and through motherhood, learning the lesson that many things often don’t happen as planned. And another gem in her story is how her clients and other mothers inspire her each day with their efforts to create healthy generational mental health habits for the families. In today's episode I sit down with my good friend, Crystal and we talk about her decision to be child free by choice. Voluntary childlessness, also called being childfree, describes the voluntary choice not to have children. A new study by the Pew Research Center surveyed over 3,800 Americans ages 18 to 49. It found that among non-parents in this cohort, 44% said it's not too likely or not likely at all they'll have kids someday. That's up by 7 percentage points from the 37% of childless adults who said the same in 2018 (Business Insider).

Millennials are choosing not to have children due to climate change, inflation, student loan debt, child-care expenses, mental health, racism and more. Crystal shares her thoughts on her decision and her response to those that ask her "why don't you have some babies". We also discuss how we're moving into a new age of women no longer having the choice to choose.

In part 2, I sit down with an old colleague, Stephanie. Stephanie and I met years ago during our time working in a psych hospital in metro Atlanta. Through out the years, Stephanie has also worked as a director at an abortion clinic in Texas as well as in Atlanta, Georgia. Stephanie shares her experience of doing the work that she has always been passionate about, providing safe medical care for women. She talks about walking past protestors each day and dealing with the occupational hazards of working at an abortion clinic. Stephanie and I also talk about what this means for women moving forward, how to advocate for ourselves in a medical setting, and how we as a community can do something about this.

In Part 1 of Roe vs. Wade and Maternal Mental Health, I talk with Atlanta Perinatal Mental Health Therapist, Elizabeth O’Brien. We talk about feeling the impact of the overturn not only with our clients, but also with ourselves as clinicians. Statistics and facts that we discuss:

-1 in 4 women have experienced an abortion (Guttmacher Institute)

-That includes women from all backgrounds. But statistics show women who receive abortions in the United States are more likely to be unmarried; to be in their 20s; to have low incomes; and to already have a child. (NYT)

-A full abortion ban could further increase Black maternal deaths by 33%, compared to a 21% increase for the overall population, the Duke study found.

In our discussion we chat about how to take care of ourselves and what we can offer clients who are also feeling helpless during this unprecedented time. Elizabeth also does an amazing job talking about advocacy and taking an innovative approach to fight for our reproductive rights.

Ms. Carruthers found her passion in education over 17 years ago as a paraprofessional in a high school special education classroom. Most recently, she was the Executive Director for the Innovation Fund Foundation at the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) where she also served as a Development and Adult Learning Facilitator and Language and Literacy Specialist. In this role, she supported five urban and two rural Georgia school systems to improve literacy instruction in grades K-3 by collaborating with district leaders, school administrators, and teachers.

Monique chats with us about the upcoming opening of Zest Preparatory Academy and the groundwork it took to make this vision happen. Monique also shares tips for parents to consider when thinking about their children’s early education. As well as how she maintains self-care while also juggling many important roles.
