Hi guys, I'm a single Dad and I have heard people reach out to you for this segment and I figured why not. I share custody of my 9 year old daughter with my ex wife.I am actively involved in my daughter’s life. I am a troop leader in my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. I am actively involved in my daughters PTA during the school year. Needless to say I do everything I can to make sure I am there for her.About a week ago I was dropping my daughter off at her soccer practice when I asked her if she wanted me to follow up with one of the parents regarding a sleepover she had asked me about. My daughter responded, “No dad, you don’t need to do that so and so's mom thinks you’re a creep because you’re asking about sleepovers.” I was, as you can imagine, absolutely gutted.I ended up reaching out to the parent that said the harmful things to try to find out why she would say something so hurtful. She claimed she never called me a “creep” but rather was talking to her husband about how you need to be careful because “creeps” are out there. I don’t know how much I believe that explanation but I have to take it at face value. Are there any suggestions fellow dads have out there about how to manage the stigmas of being a single dad to a daughter? Any suggestions about how to avoid being labeled a “creep” simply because you’re trying to insure that your daughter doesn’t miss out on life events simply because of the cards we have been dealt.
