QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University golf program was featured in the first-ever QU Athletics podcast that will supplement the Hawk Talk Radio Show this semester.
The director of golf, George Schrage joined the show with two of his players as senior men's golfer Nick Messinger, and freshman women's golfer, Zoee Harrington were interviewed by the voice of the Hawks, Will Conerly.
The podcast discussed the adaptations the program has made while taking advantage of the opportunity to compete during the COVID-19 era.
George Schrage has started his fifth year leading the women's golf team and is in his third year as the coach of the men's program. QU golf will compete in their non-championship segment this fall.
Senior Nick Messinger (Alton, IL) joined the show to represent the men's program. The other seniors on the squad include homegrown products Nathan Hoebing (Quincy,IL) and Kolbe Rodemich (Quincy, IL).
Both programs have been on the links in qualifying action to determine the rosters for the upcoming events. The competitive environment was discussed, and Schrage mentioned how Messinger worked through three bogeys, yet shot a 65.
"He's definitely separated himself from the pack right now," Schrage said. "Anytime you can throw out a 65 at Quincy Country Club, you're golfing your ball, that's for sure."
The men's team will begin their fall campaign on September 21st at their home course, Quincy Country Club, which will be hosted by Culver-Stockton. To follow, the men will compete in four consecutive meets hosted by GLVC schools: Lewis University (Sep. 28 - Sep. 29), University of Illinois Springfield (Oct. 4 - Oct. 5), University of Missouri-St. Louis (Oct. 12 - Oct. 13), and McKendree University (Oct. 19 - Oct. 20).
Zoee Harrington (O'Fallon, MO) represented the women's team on the show. The women's team features five freshmen, one sophomore, and two juniors. The two juniors are Alyson Goggin (Webster Groves, MO) and Hannah Maguire (Quincy, IL).
Schrage expects a lot from his young squad this year and beyond.
"Through hard work and being able to keep a level head (on the women's side) we're going to be able to come close to setting some school records," Schrage stated in the podcast.
The women will begin play September 14th at the UIndy Fall Invitational and play three more meets hosted at GLVC schools: Drury (Sep 21 - Sep 22), University of Illinois Springfield (Oct 4 - Oct 5), and McKendree University (Oct 19 - Oct 20).
