For Pride month, we will be speaking to the grand marshals.

First, we speak with Josephine "Jo" Jones, the Female Identifying Grand Marshal for Pride Houston 365 and senior police officer with the Houston Police Department. For the past five years, Jo has served as the LGBTQIA+ liaison, building crucial bridges between law enforcement and the queer community. With 18 years on the force, she brings unique perspective to her role: "Behind the badge is a human being who cares deeply." Jo discusses how her position allows her to advocate for community members while helping transform perceptions within the department. Her selection as Grand Marshal represents both personal validation and institutional progress.

Lauren Tennyson takes us inside the First Christian Church of Katy, where radical inclusivity is reshaping suburban ministry. As Outreach Director, Lauren oversees their "transparent closet," providing clothing and resources to LGBTQ+ youth in need. The church has earned recognition as Outsmart Magazine's favorite trans support organization through their commitment to creating safe spaces outside the Loop. Lauren invites listeners to their upcoming Pride events, including drag bingo fundraisers on June 7th and a special Pride Sunday service featuring a trans male preacher sharing his journey.

We close with Derek Charles Livingston, artistic director of Stages Houston, discussing his direction of the world premiere "Let Her Rip." This innovative production weaves together two historical threads – the Jack the Ripper murders and the matchstick maker strike of 1888 – to examine ongoing violence against marginalized women. The parallels to contemporary issues, including violence against trans women of color, make this a particularly powerful Pride Month offering. Derek also shares exciting plans for Stages' upcoming season, featuring diverse voices and stories.

D. Jerome is starring in THE WIZ, running at the Hobby Center now through May 4th. Broadway World writer Brett Cullum got to interview him, and they talked about his background as a fierce triple threat who brings new life to his role. THE WIZ has been around for 50 years! But this tour represents a fresh take on the material.

In a podcast exclusive, Brett Cullum gets to talk to legendary icon Dixie Longate. Dixie is in residence at Stages Houston until April 20th, doing her last round of a whirlwind tour that has been happening since 2008! Dixie is the creation of actor Kris Andersson who, in a rare switcheroo, allows QUEER VOICES to talk to him and Dixie in one session. You get all the sass of the plastic pusher as well as the insight from the man who made her. In the end, we find out that Dixie is a loving tribute to women everywhere who have to stand up for themselves. Also, Dixie was in a huge controversy after her run at the Kennedy Center, which sparked ire from some politicians. You can't get a voice any queerer than Dixie's or Kris'.

Brett Cullum has a conversation with the Shunya Theatre group about a romantic comedy they are staging at the MATCH in Houston for four nights only. It's about a white guy meeting an Indian guy at a temple and the clash in cultures and families that results. The show is called A NICE INDIAN BOY, and it has recently been turned into a film starring Jonathan Groff.

A powerful convergence of art and advocacy unfolds in this episode of Queer Voices as two transformative leaders share their visions for Houston's LGBTQ+ community.

Pulitzer Prize finalist Lisa D'Amour invites listeners into her boundary-defying theatrical world, where traditional storytelling meets immersive art installations. Her fourth collaboration with Catastrophic Theater, "The Frozen Section," imagines a surreal post-apocalyptic grocery store where survivors maintain humanity through collective cosplay performance of working and being in a grocery. "We meet the people who are the workers and the people who are the shoppers," D'Amour explains, revealing how this strange microcosm explores community resilience when societal structures collapse. The playwright's description of her previous work—including a six-hour installation where audiences witnessed a fabric forest appear over 7 hours and vanish in forty minutes—showcases her unique approach to creating theater that functions as both poetry and social commentary. She's amazing, and also from New Orleans! 

Meanwhile, Montrose Center CEO Avery Belyeu reflects on her first year leading Houston's largest LGBTQ+ resource hub during increasingly challenging political times. With previous leadership roles at Lambda Legal and The Trevor Project, Bellew brings both professional expertise and personal perspective as a transgender woman navigating the current landscape. Her vision for the Center emphasizes community connection as the ultimate solution to political scapegoating and potential funding threats. "I think that's where it's so important for all of us to make sure we're taking care of ourselves," Bellew advises, highlighting the Center's comprehensive services for 55,000 annual clients across all age groups—from youth programming to senior housing.

The conversation weaves between artistic expression and practical advocacy as both guests demonstrate how Houston's queer community creates resilience through creativity, connection, and care. Whether through D'Amour's surreal theatrical worlds or the Montrose Center's tangible support services, this episode reveals how LGBTQ+ Houstonians continue building futures despite uncertainty.
