Last week, Environment Southland detected two invasive species in the waters of Rakiura/Stewart Island - the invertebrate carpet sea squirt and Undaria, an invasive seaweed.

EnviroSouth Biodiversity and Biosecurity Operations Manager Ali Meade stresses that the arrival of these species is of great concern. Although they aren’t a direct threat to marine animals in a predator-prey sense, these species outcompete native species and degrade marine infrastructure. Meade says that Envirosouth is set to send divers in Rakiura’s waters to rip out undaria, and consult experts nationally and internationally to find solutions for carpet sea squirt.
