This week on Business as Usual, we spoke with Trent Smith from the University of Otago Department of Economics about urban economics. We explored the impact of structures in cities and behaviours of those living in cities to the economic viability of them, and compared this to the livability of Ōtepoti.

Despite them being everyone’s favourite furry friends, cats are a major problem here in Aotearoa for our native and endemic wildlife. According to conservation group Forest and Bird, cats not only kill many of our unique birds, but they also target Wētā and reptiles like skinks and geckos.

In June, a group of animal rights and conservation groups including SPCA and Predator Free Dunedin met with the Dunedin City Council to discuss promoting responsible cat ownership.

Collins calls Ōtepoti Aotearoa’s wildlife capital, and the local cat population needs to be reigned in to preserve this. Beyond microchipping and desexing cats, Collins says it’s important to make sure they stay indoors when possible to reduce the risk of cats killing native animals and prevent the risk of cats being killed or hurt, and that there should be a limit of cat numbers per household to ensure the local cat population can decrease.

A recent study from the University of Otago’s School of Finance has found that the age of retirement for non-homeowners is increasing as the cost of housing and the accessibility of homeownership decreases.

Associate professor Helen Roberts acts as a lead researcher on the study which finds that non-homeowners have less disposable income post-retirement than homeowners - a problem which is exacerbated for Māori and renters who need to work part-time or full-time to maintain their lifestyle.

Professor Roberts believes government actions such as social housing and adding more medium-high density housing to Aoteaora’s property pool is necessary for fighting rising costs of living which are heightening the retirement age.

Chief Science Advisor to the Ministry of Transport Dr Simon Kingham speaks on the third instalment of an ongoing study into the effects of air pollution in New Zealand, which suggests scientists have underestimated the harms of nitrogen dioxide pollution to human health.

Kingham says a series of policies set to address the climate crisis will also effectively tackle air pollution from transport, and the next step is to change the ways we travel as well as travelling less - which Kingham says will make the world a better place anyway.
