This week on Business as Usual we veered global and looked at the economy in the United States. The US economy has shrunk for the second quarter in a row, sparking the question of whether a recession is underway in the States and imminent for the rest of the world?

We spoke with Trent Smith from the University of Otago’s Department of Economics about inflation in the US, how it came about, and what is being done to combat it in comparison to policy in Aotearoa.

When the National Business Review released its 2018 Rich List, a new generation of millionaires were beginning to qualify for the list. 34 newcomers made the list in 2018, many of whom had made their fortune in the grocery industry. Profits within the industry have only increased since then. A six-month investigation by Science magazine, prompted by the efforts of Vanderbilt University neuroscientist Dr Matthew Schrag, found over 200 images in scientific papers about one particular Alzheimer’s Disease protein variant were doctored. Last week, a petition urging the government to stop overseas exports of millions of kilograms of plastic waste was presented to Parliament, with activists raising concerns over health and environmental issues overseas. Lydia Chai, the petition leader, spoke to us about the impact New Zealand’s export of plastic is having on developing countries, including Chai’s home country of Malaysia.
