Humanity won the decades long war against polio in 1999, when the Polio virus was eradicated from most of the world. Despite successful immunisation campaigns that stopped the virus dead in its tracks, polio has a habit of reappearing.

In mid-July, a young unvaccinated man in Rockland County, New York contracted polio from someone else who took the oral polio vaccine, making him the first US case of polio in nearly a decade. Traces of the virus have also shown up in wastewater samples from counties around New York, which prompted New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett to say there could be hundreds of New Yorkers with polio already.

Professor Peter McIntyre from the University of Otago’s Department of Women's and Children's Health says that polio is not a particularly grand threat due to mass immunisation, but the problem lies in Rockland County’s low vaccination rates which give the virus an in to spread.

We spoke to Professor McIntyre about the severity of the situation, what health authorities can do to contain the virus, and how polio vaccines work.

The Statistics Act of 1975 has governed how Aotearoa collects and uses data for the past few decades; however, our modern use of computers and new forms of data collection have potentially left the bill behind. A new bill was introduced to parliament late last year; one which would alter how we interact with data collection nationally. Last week, the new Data and Statistics Bill passed its third reading. We spoke to Research Associate professor Gabrielle Davie to explain why this new bill has been introduced, and what it could mean for the way we collect data.

Last week, the Leith river, which runs directly through the university campus, flooded to the extent where its banks were at risk of bursting, resulting in the evacuation of 36 nearby properties. While the flood left plenty of visible debris in its wake, such as picnic tables and shopping trollies, there will also be an environmental aspect to the aftermath of the flooding event. We spoke to Professor Chris Hepburn (Department of Marine Science, University of Otago) to learn more about the impact of such both natural and human pollution on waterways.

A University of Otago-led study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, exposes the reality of Child poverty from the perspective of the children themselves. 168 12-year-olds took part in the study which involved them wearing automatic cameras for four days that took a photo every 7 seconds to witness just what the day to day life of a child in poverty was like.

We spoke to Head of Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington Professor Louise Signal, about the research, the significance of its findings, and what needs to be done to address the issue of child poverty in Aotearoa.
