Last week, the Green Party and student unions released the findings of the Peoples Inquiry into Student Wellbeing, which revealed two thirds of students are struggling to afford basic necessities. As Aotearoa climbs towards a second COVID-19 peak, alongside widespread influenza cases and second COVID infections, primary schools are preparing for a tough few month of crippling staff shortages and high student absences.

Liam Rutherford, President of the New Zealand Education Institute, says the country needs to be smarter and more cautious of COVID, as teachers see symptomatic students without masks nearly daily, which poses a great risk for school staff, school pupils, and their families.

Rutherford believes the dire situation for primary schools won’t be changed until the Government makes a long-term sustained effort to recruit more primary school teachers, as staff sickness and a general teacher shortage exacerbate the issue.
